It’s a miracle that you got an offer from Microsoft straight out of college, all I hear about from graduating or job hunting SE’s is that they’re applying to hundreds of jobs and getting rejected or ghosted
Great video and story, I also worked for Microsoft but as contractor in the IP TV division as server lab admin, the job required a lot of scripting and we could not use Symantec Ghost to image servers which was what I was most experienced with and had to use Microsoft's in house software that was command line to do so, so I left. In hind site I probably should have stayed longer and maybe after a year or so they might have converted me to a permanent employee. Before the position I worked at IBM Global Services 1996 -1998, Cisco Systems, Intel, ADP Pobusiness, and several startups including VA Linux where I installed a Microsoft Terminal Server in 1999 with Citrix Metaframe so Linux desktops that were in Finance could access their finacial program running in Windows. Best of luck in your new Product Management position, I hope you like it and stay many years at Microsoft.
Happy for you man, glad you figured out early you wanted to make the switch, my former manager also started out as a software engineer and transitioned to PM, best of luck in the new role!
Try this over 30 years - you have to maintain your skills and it's exhausting at times. Don't get complacent because in tough times the interviews are brutal. I think sometimes they are just having fun when they know they will not be hiring you. Expect no help because most are working on looking better than you by any means necessary. Coworkers are not your friends. I enjoyed working and when I got a new job, I immersed myself in it and after a year or 2 I was valuable to the company. When there are rumors of layoffs you will see the real world.
Even though I'm not a Microsoft worker or tech overall 😄 This was very inspiring. I enjoy how open and optimistic you are! This is exactly how growth works, take chances! 💪🏽 wishing you the best of luck on your journey ✨
ok so.. i dont understand.. can u transition from a position to a completely different one so easily in a big tech? we are talking about two different jobs...
Dude... would love to know more about what its like being a PM. Longtime Senior software engineer and honestly... I don't love coding lol. I find as a consultant I enjoy working with different teams, getting things in order, etc. Curious if maybe PM is a more natural route than the future engineering manager step.
Gotcha, yeah there's probably some overlap between engineering manager and PM (except I don't have the same level of authority or visibility into code, and I have to talk with customers to get feedback). I definitely would encourage the transition if you enjoy collaborating with many teams and looking at a product from a broad birds eye view (instead of being deep in the technical implementation), and if you don't enjoy coding anymore.
Hey bro you seem to be so optimistic and that's a good thing but not in my case. I am going through the same mental trauma and pessimist thoughts as i have zero percent interest and love for coding but unluckily, i have to pursue this as my career as i own that heck degree. I am crying. Your story is impressing me to switch to something else, a little bit easier for me. Thanks man.
Fuuck, I made it to final round interview between me and this guy. Was supposed to hear back from the recruiter today but haven't heard anything. I didn't think ghosting was a thing.
You know what I am also going through the same situation and that was before seeing your video. I was thinking about the exact profile and all. I find this video a big coincidence to match up with my situation. It was a good video. What you did was the right decision.
@@browntechdaddy yes it was but still I need to understand that product owner or product manager role is it what will be right for me or what since it might be requiring different things. So I need to get some guidance on that.
Hey bro, glad you figured your way out. I was wondering if your compensation package took a hit because of switching to PM role or do they pay similar amount in both the roles?

@browntechdaddy On a more serious note, either you continue with your education or lookout for a company that offers better guidance under a team leader. We are today where we stand only because of our teachers, the effort they put in; in pushing us to our limits, at times beyond, and the pressure we were able to withstand. My very best wishes.

Maybe they don't have the enough skills standards that the employers ask apart form the ia taking over many it jobs
I got an offer from Microsoft when I graduated high school and it was for the CTO position. I had to turn it down. I was overqualified.
Glad to know that you're happy with your new role Sid , you deserve it!!!
Good luck :)
Thank you as always for the kind words. It means a lot. :)

Best of luck! I went from PM to SWE, Microsoft as well!

It's roughly a similar amount. I'll make a video sometime that details the similarities and differences between the roles' salaries.
