We put the round a tree stump being used as a wood chopping block and then shot at the .50 cal shell with a BB gun until it went off. Split the chopping block in half - no idea where the bullet went.
I remember watching an episode of myth busters with exploding bullets that we’re set off in an oven and the only one that showed potential lethal harm was the 50bmg. Had that shrapnel from the casing hit one of your arteries in your neck you very well could have died. You should get some PPE when doing stuff like this.

The reason why a grenade shoots shrapnel is because the shell is brittle and indented to break away. A brass bullet casing is too flexible and uniform to fling any pieces off. Do the tests yourself man, like I have in person. 99 out of 100 times the deformed/split bullet casing will be in one piece, not grenade shrapnel

i think if the bullet is loosen like shaking now that will blow off with crossbow. but if it tight like he did with a tape thing and i think the crossbow or the other stronger bow will work😉

The arrow need to be reconstruct (e.g safety spring so the crossbow's power didnt hit the primer/barrel-like arrow tip so no shrapnel flying and the bullet still intact/Redesign the crossbow itself)
As kids we took target heads and drilled them out and epoxied a primer into the hole and then epoxied a BB to the primer. Filled an aluminum arrow full of gun powder and screwed the target head on. When it his a solid surface you have an aerodynamically stable grenade and shrapnel goes EVERYWHERE. I used a50# draw re curve bow for distance.

Make the little red barrel longer so it fully supports the round but allows for the brass to stick out enough to push into the firing pin. Still dangerous but you wont get shrapnel feom the case, this may increase the 50cal velocity so be very careful.
In order to obtain a better and more accurate flight path you need to tailor the center of gravity further aft by increasing the weight of the arrow opposite the end of the heavy bullet.

You should use the crossbow so that you can attach a string to the trigger and get a safe distance away to shoot it
A crossbow might be to strong and can cause the bullet to go off when the crossbow gets fired. Would be cool to try though.
