This album, Canciones de Mi Padre, was released in 1987 and still stands as the best selling non-English language record in US music history. Whatever she touched turned to gold.
Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. She has Mexican heritage on her dad's side. Growing up she listened to many types of music, including Mexican music, which was sung by her entire family. She does a great job singing in Spanish. I have her Spanish album called "Canciones de Mi Padre (Spanish for "Songs of My Father"). Sadly she has progressive supranuclear palsy & can no longer sing a note.
The song is from her album "Canciones de Mi Padre" released in 1987 and was a huge crossover hit. "La Charreada" is from the same record. There's not a style she can't do!!
Her voice is exquisite and unparalleled. It's so great watching her smile and have so much fun with these Spanish-language songs. There are other excellent videos from that same old broadcast on YT.
I think we respond because she is clearly so invested in her father's culture/her Mexican heritage. It comes across as joyful and authentic. Plus, the costumes and setting and band are gorgeous.
Linda is one of my all time favorite female singers (she can sing virtually anything!) and is one of my top ten kind, supportive and generous persons EVER!
She’s amazing. Everything she’s ever sung is top shelf. I love this entire show. Mariachi is simply beautiful. Powerful and goes straight to the heart…and feet.
I grew up in Southern California and there was always Mariachi music in the backround of my life. I love hearing Linda singing with this band. Her album "Canciones de mis padres" is amazing. My Spanish is very rusty and limited, but I totally enjoy the whole album whether I understand the lyrics or not.
The joy on your face when Ms Ronstadt holds those notes is like a child getting an unexpected present. Glad you liked this video as well as La Charreada. Wait for her performance in Pirates of Penzance and the Nelson Riddle albums.
i love linda so much! and was fortunate to have gone to many, many of her concerts, including, the canciones performance! she makes me proud to be a mexican/american woman. ¡viva la linda! 💃🏻🎶♥️
I think what you are referring to is what I will call the "catch" in her voice where she changes note - is to me one of her signature talents, and is one of many ways she excellently conveys emotions in her vocals. She sings in pretty much every genre known, from country, to pop, new wave, folk, hard rock, opera, etc. Top Linda choices from me: (1) video of her signing live in studio to "Lose Again" - one of her all-time best emotional vocals; (2) "Different Drum" - studio version of her first big hit in 1967; (3) her signing live to "Long, Long Time" on any TV shows from 1970 or so; and (4) her singing/playing guitar live to "It Don't Matter Anymore" from a 1977 concert I think.
I'm an old guy, so I really like her recordings with the Nelson Riddle orchestra, singing the 'Great American Songbook' standards, one of my favorites: "But Not For Me". But, FYI: she has done almost everything: pop, rock, country, standards, R&B, Broadway, Mexican (in honor of her father and grandfather, and to honor her ancestry), and she's excelled at everything. She has earned 11 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award. Many of her albums have been certified gold, platinum or multiplatinum in the US and internationally. She has also earned nominations for a Tony Award and a Golden Globe award. She was awarded the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the Latin Recording Academy in 2011, and also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy in 2016. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014, and on July 28, 2014, she was awarded the US National Medal of Arts and Humanities. In 2019 Ronstadt was among five honorees who received the Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements.
She is just a goddess! Now you know why so many boomer dudes had a crush on her, including me. Check out her big band stuff. She does it all, better then the best! 😎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It’s so cool to see someone who, like you said, doesn’t listen to this music really ever, and really “understand” it in its pure essence!! I have, since I was 5 years old, been enthralled with mariachi and ranchera, and have known its majesty practically all my life! It’s is my heritage. I’ve always wished others around the world, especially our American neighbors, could see its beauty. To see others on the “outside” understand it and not be able to put it fully into words…! Truly incredible to witness. Thanks for posting. Viva la música Mexicana!! 🇲🇽
I was lucky to see her live during this tour (Canciones de mi Padre) and Yes - it was as great as you think it would be. - with Mariachi Vargas no less (considered the premier Mariachi Band it the world :-D She grew up listening to canciones rancheras so it just comes natural to her.
She was country rock/pop for a good number of albums but then moved on to some other genres. "You're No Good" and "Back in the U.S.A." come to mind as a couple of her rock/pop hits from the '70's.
As I always assert, Linda has the most beautiful voice on the planet. There’s nobody with vocals as powerful while retaining the welcoming sweetness she puts forth. I have learned that Mariachi music is extremely difficult to perform and she worked very hard to do it perfectly. Sooo good! I would recommend this beautiful live performance of “Down So Low”ruclips.net/video/D7gCtCWxTYo/видео.html. It is so soulful and heartfelt you will feel it deep inside. Thanks for appreciating this stunningly talented artist. 🌺✌️
I love Linda Ronstadt! I saw her concert "Canciones de Mi Padre" in Albuquerque New Mexico many years ago. I speak Spanish and so I encourage you.. keep going and you will learn it!! Usted puede hacerlo!! Paz y amor solamente!
Linda always put together the perfect band no matter what she was performing. This was a superb Mariachi band and dancers. And the levels and pure passion in her voice tell the story no matter what the language.
Someone beat me to this request :) Linda is the GOAT you should hear here sing opera IM pretty sure this song was from a TV special She is like the Pentatonix she doesnt do covers she does improvements PS theres lots more videos from this show that are even better Also check out her versions of old classics with Nelson Riddle and the orchessstrah
She said that at their family gatherings they talked English but sang in Spanish. She doesn't speak Spanish but her family taught her the right pronunciation
This musical style requires the singer to sing the meaning (and enunciate) and the feeling (drams and emotion), and you can see how it gave her a solo career as a singer in all the other genres ithat began her career. To have listened to this style in childhood set her up to be able to hold the attention of an audience. It was difficult to be a singer in rock and other genres unless you were able to bring additional talent like composing to it (especially for females), but she could, and once you can do that composers are thrilled to supply great songs.
I'm glad that you want to explore Spanish music. There are many genres. The one you just watched was traditional huapango song. A popular video to watch is "Hasta Que Te Conoci (en vivo)" by Juan Gabriel.
Another Spanish language singer you would really love is Juan Gabriel check out the live version of “hasta que te conocí” one of the best live performances I have ever seen. 🤯
She made two Spanish "Rancheras" albums with mariachi. 1. "Cancionés dé mí Padre". 1987 2. "Más cancionés". 1991 La Cigarra is on album #1 track #4. These were songs her father loved and she grew up listening to. Possibly her best albums due to vocalizing, tradition, melodies and studio mix sonic quality. Look into them, you'll love e'm.
Wonderful reaction, thank you. Also, I wish you well in your Spanish language studies - I look forward to seeing you react to some of the great songs & singers of the Spanish-speaking world. Be well.
Conciones de mi padre "songs of my father" watch the middle of this concert she talks about her family , pictures, they been singing since the 18th hundreds.her father is part german mex.
You should watch her documentary, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. It shows her learning each Spanish phrase with Ruben Blades to know exactly how to make it perfect. She's done rock, country, r&b, opera, spanish, jazz, pop, and the Great American Songbook with Nelson Riddle (famous for producing Frank Sinatra). My favorite video is the live 1977 performance of Desperado with just her and a piano. Sadly, she can no longer sing now due to Parkinson's Disease.
Enjoy your reactions to Linda who will always be my favourite artist. Her 1977 concert in Atlanta has Tumbling Dice and you’re no good for some rock Linda. This would give you the chance to see just how versatile she was.Her great band is showcased very well in these videos.More Linda thanks!
Should check out "Somewhere Out There", her duet with James Ingram from the soundtrack of the movie "An American Tail". A big #2 hit and her vocals are awesome on it.
YT is oversaturated with reactions to blue bayou. Tired of that one being the standard go-to for first time reactions. There are numerous others songs of that need to be heard too.
When I was a kid, I spent hours studying Mexican music. I would study the lyrics in Spanish. I learned vocabulary, translations (Spa/Eng), and would imagine the stories told. The songs would tell about love, betrayal, travels, adventures, and even death. My mom would notice it and would say that the songs were inppropriate for me.
Ok ,,, now that you've entered the realm of Mexican mariachi music... You have to now check out "El Divo" Juan Gabriel.... And by that I mean everything he has ever written and composed.... You will fall in love with his voice, and the way he has his audience along with the Mexican orchestra of Bella's artes..... Eating out of his hands...... All of his live concert footage.... You will not be disappointed..... You will want to add it to your playlist.......
Checkout a few other youtubers' reactions to Linda Ronstadt's Mariachi performances. In every case, whether the speak Spanish not, they are smiling by the 15 second mark.
The woman could sing anything, but if you want to see her work out her upper range check out the clip of her singing "Poor Wandering One" from her time in the Broadway production of Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta "The Pirates of Penzance".
❤this. If you start listening, Spanish, besides Selena, check out Jenny Rivera, she's as traditional regional Spanish as well, and a great story behind her to.
You may like Carlos Vives who is a massive performer from Columbia who has brought the true Columbian west coast sounds to the world. Take a listen to his album "El Rock de Mi Pueblo" especially the song Que Tiene La Noche. Here is a live video Carlos Vives - La Gota Fría / Pa' Mayté (65th Grammy Awards). You might also enjoy the Gipsy Kings who sing in mostly Catalan Spanish, I love their music, it touches my soul. Si quiere, escucha a esta cancion, es uno que traigan muchas lagrimas a mis ojos. Gipsy Kings - Trista Pena (Live US Tour '90)
Great reaction. Suggest a catchy tune “Fotos y Recuerdos” (Back on the Chain Gang) by Selena who tragically passed away at an early age. Good luck with your Spanish journey.
This album, Canciones de Mi Padre, was released in 1987 and still stands as the best selling non-English language record in US music history. Whatever she touched turned to gold.
Linda has a stupendously powerful voice.

I have always liked L R and when I learned she has a Mexican background and listen to her singing I'm on cloud NINE!!
The song is from her album "Canciones de Mi Padre" released in 1987 and was a huge crossover hit. "La Charreada" is from the same record. There's not a style she can't do!!
She is singing from her roots. This is what she was born to sing. I love all her songs but this is what she loves. And this is why we love her.
Her voice is exquisite and unparalleled. It's so great watching her smile and have so much fun with these Spanish-language songs. There are other excellent videos from that same old broadcast on YT.

Linda Ronstadt covered any genre she wanted to. Her voice was absolute perfection. The lady had lungs.
The joy on your face when Ms Ronstadt holds those notes is like a child getting an unexpected present. Glad you liked this video as well as La Charreada. Wait for her performance in Pirates of Penzance and the Nelson Riddle albums.
Yes the songs we never heard on the radio were some of her best.
A reminder to everyone, this is a live performance. This is not a studio recording. Talent like this is rare.
i love linda so much! and was fortunate to have gone to many, many of her concerts, including, the canciones performance! she makes me proud to be a mexican/american woman. ¡viva la linda!
💃🏻🎶♥️
Perfect PERFORMANCE in MEXICAN SPANISH 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
And just look at her smile ... singing what she loves so much.🥰
Looking forward to so many more Ronstadt reactions…soooo many choices and styles …
"Blue Bayou" definitely worth a listen. If you're going to cover a Ray Orbison classis, you better have a voice like Linda's.
It's just WOW..What power...yeahhh.

You love it because it's such a beautiful sound, from the soul. Mexican culture is so beautiful. There's so much to love.

It's her presentation... she's adorable and has the pipes. What's not to love ?
Fave performance 💖
If you liked this song next you should listen to LA Charreada, just beautiful. Another one the live version of Down so Low omg!!!
La Charreada was his first Spanish language Ronstadt reaction around 1 month ago. ruclips.net/video/KxXF4dlz5dY/видео.html
Linda mesmerises the guys backing her up..here's this American women astounding Los hombres de Mexico..

Willy Nelson once said that there are two kinds of people in the world.
Those that love Linda and those that haven't met her yet.
I would suggest that you watch "The Sound of My Voice", a documentary about Linda. I think you'd enjoy it. GREAT reaction!
That was live, dude...LIVE!
She was country rock/pop for a good number of albums but then moved on to some other genres. "You're No Good" and "Back in the U.S.A." come to mind as a couple of her rock/pop hits from the '70's.
Also, Tumblin Dice, when will i be loved, just one look, heatwave, it’s so easy
Awesome! I will never forget this live show, at the Fox in Atlanta. All the musicians and dancers were at her level!
I can't understand a frickin' word she is saying but it doesn't matter. My God! So amazing!
Linda is special, one of a kind. I could listen to her all day.
Good music in any language is good music. And Linda! What a voice.

This girl can sing her grocery list and people would pay to hear it 😂❤️
You like this so much because she's a siren. No way you can look away!
It's the voice..the harmony..melody..the music and the greatness...would loved to have heard her sing with Freddie Mercury...WOW....
Awesome as ever!
She said that at their family gatherings they talked English but sang in Spanish. She doesn't speak Spanish but her family taught her the right pronunciation

Saw Linda open for Neil Young March 1973 in Seattle 🎉
Strait outta HEAVEN.

Holding that breath sooooooo long is mind-blowing. She is magnificent.
Amor is a very important word.................Gracias............. eres linda..............like Linda Ronstad
I would have loved to have seen these performances live. They are fantastic!
She's always been amazing.
Obsessed.
She is beautiful in every way,Can sing any genre there is and has better than most anyone
I think true musicians and music lovers appreciate great voices and music regardless of genre. Appreciate it but not threatened by it.
Another Spanish language singer you would really love is Juan Gabriel check out the live version of “hasta que te conocí” one of the best live performances I have ever seen. 🤯

Try Down So Low live from Germany 1976. She did 2 Mariachi albums 1987 and one a few years later
Try "What's New"-- a classic song with the Nelson Riddle orchestra
Conciones de mi padre "songs of my father" watch the middle of this concert she talks about her family , pictures, they been singing since the 18th hundreds.her father is part german mex.
I believe this is from a NRP special entitled MUSIC OF MY FATHER.

Her last album, Adieu False Heart, is often overlooked. It was a dive into Cajun music.
Thank You for This!!!
Blue Bayou (Official Music Video) worth a listen.
Overdone. Let him hear other better ones of hers first
It is from the album "canciones de la padre", songs of my father.

The word you’re looking for is virtuosity
❤this. If you start listening, Spanish, besides Selena, check out Jenny Rivera, she's as traditional regional Spanish as well, and a great story behind her to.
You should check out her BIG BAND Album, with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra! Just Sublime! WATCH OVER ME!
She did many genres. no box for her.
You like it so much because there’s nothing not to like about her voice
Ps... Mexican ranchera music is the most emotional music you will ever encounter.....
