Holy crap; you reacted to this song! Outstanding. Further evidence that Linda Ronstadt could sing anything she wanted to as this song demands control that few vocalist have. Thanks for going here, Salvo!
I LOVE that you reacted to this!!! Linda Linda Linda!!! one of the greatest voices America has ever produced. the fact that this is the same singer of "long long time" "la charreada" "desperado" "what's new" "somewhere out there" "different drum" "you're no good" "it's so easy" is crazy. Her ability to authentically go to each style of music is stunning. Linda was blessed with this crazy talent, but she was also blessed with curiosity, a love of all forms of music, and a hunger to explore all different areas of her voice and of music. this is very rare. Linda could have stayed in any areas where she had success solely, but she kept going and kept challenging herself. she is thrilling on every level. and a down-to-earth lovely woman to boot! To answer your question about Linda's stage experience, she had been onstage in concert for years at this point in terms of her popular music. But this was her very first stage venture in a musical/operetta. Which is also amazing. And in NYC where the knives are always sharp and ready to cut an artist down who is daring to try something new. Linda had a triumph in this production. It started as a summer production in Central Park, but then it transferred to broadway where it ran for a couple of years, actually. So she was singing this aria 8 times a week everyday for weeks on broadway. Linda was nominated for the Tony award best actress in a musical for this performance. Again, really amazing. I am so thrilled that through these reaction channels a whole new cross-section and generation of folks have discovered the magic of Linda Ronstadt! This must be especially meaningful for her during these past few years, as she is no longer able to sing because of her diagnosis of supra nuclear palsy. we are blessed to have her recordings and her videos to keep that incredible voice singing. thanks for posting. I love your channel.
Thank you for taking the time to put it so eloquently. Linda did it because she’s a great artist, curious and ambitious. As time goes by, I come to see her great courage as well.
I saw her performing this live in Central Park back in August 1980, before it moved to Broadway and later filmed. Man, that was a surprise and a real treat!
My husband & I just watched this recently. "The Pirates of Penzance" is a 1983 British-American romantic musical comedy film based on Gilbert & Sullivan's 1879 comic opera of the same name. This really shows the incredible range of Linda Ronstadt. She can sing any genre including musical theatre & opera.
I'm glad you reacted to the stage version rather than the movie, not that I don't enjoy the film (i do), but because it shows that she really could do it live. Also, Rex Smith, who plays Frederick, has an incredible voice as well. He had a few hits in the 70s and 80s, and also portrayed Daredevil in a short-lived tv series. Crazy, right? This production includes fine performances from Kevin Kline as the Pirate King, and Patricia Rutledge as Ruth, though Angela Lansbury was in the film. This verion is also available on RUclips in it's complete form, and considering it was recorded on a potato masquerading as a video camera has pretty decent sound quality.
I saw Linda performing Canciones de me Padre at the Fox Theater in Atlanta when her mike went out. She still filled the theater with her voice. Truly awesome!
What fun! I thought you might be the ONLY reactor to actually watch and enjoy Linda in this genre….Gilbert and Sullivan…operetta . One of the wonderful aspects of Linda’s career is her range; from folk, to pop, to rock, to light opera, to The music of her heritage from her father from Mexico.
She gorgeously took on the Great American Songbook with 3 torch song albums along with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra as well! After the operetta, before the heritage music :)
@@robynmurray7421 which is most people! Regardless, the greater point here is that this video is not the ideal place for him to start checking out Linda’s music career.
That performance sure puts her popular singing in a different light. Clearly, she didn't need a lot of engineering to her voice production. Just beautiful!
In the mid 80s while my friends we all about cabbage patch kids and barbies I spent all my time lounging around listening to linda ronstadt records. On repeat 😂 I had a blue tshirt with her name in silver glitter that I wore with everything from jeans to plaid skirts...my favorite pic is me wearing it at age 9 at my sister's birthday party ❤ her voice was just the most amazing voice I had ever heard. A strong, powerful angel's voice. Along with Karen carpenter and Carole king...they began my love of music.
Ms Ronstadt transversed the musical genre spectrum with recordings in most. Most of her radio airplay came at the beginning of her career which allowed her to follow her dreams and work on music she wanted to do not having to follow the album producers and record execs. Her later recordings were passion endeavors and allowed her to sing with friends Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for Trio and Trio II, and with Tammy Wynette and Lorreta Lynn, several duets with Aaron Neville.
This was Linda’s first foray into musical theater. She was always up for new challenges. It was produced by Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival. It was originally performed outdoors in Central Park. I was lucky enough to see it twice. I went to the cast party on closing night and got to meet and briefly talk with Linda. She was very sweet and approachable. She did an opera at the Shakespeare Festival downtown at the Public Theater. She played Mimi in La Boheme. She could do anything.
This was a Broadway version of the old G&S operetta that did a certain amount of lampooning the old style, and was quite popular. It starred Linda, Kevin Kline, Rex Smith, and Estelle Parsons. They made a move version with much the same cast, though they replaced Estelle with none other than Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney). One of Linda's first forays out of the genres that made her a star and began to reveal her versatility. She also went on to perform in NYC in a production of the classic opera La Boheme by Puccini, as the leading character Mimi (the whole show was double cast, cuz the demands of singing opera make consecutive performances difficult, at best). There's a recording of her and David Carroll singing Mimi's and Rodolfo's twin arias and subsequent duet in Act One: ruclips.net/video/kQhBVWqnMH4/видео.htmlsi=1mWUx8sXoiuhTyVl
This was the Off-Broadway Public Theater version that moved to broadway in 1981. I was able to see it live. It also starred Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. His performance would be worth reacting to as well.
Kevin Kline states that Linda’s beautiful voice brought tears to his eyes during the Pirates of Penzance. It’s all about ability to sing anything! She is an American treasure like Dolly Parton. She wanted to do it, so she did. No one ever stopped her from pursuing her goals. She has sung every genre in American music and has sold two platinum Latin albums.
When Linda expressed interest in doing musical theater, Joseph Papp (Producer of Pirates of Penzance) offered her the job no questions asked but Linda insisted on auditioning and then sat around the table reads, learning her part (and everyone else's) which impressed her fellow stage performers. Her voice dumb struck Kevin Kline, he knew she could sing, but she showed him she could SING.
We love Linda she had such a talent and it was so sad about her illness that ended her singing career. Her gift covered such a wide range. We have never stopped listening to her music. We went years ago to see the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera, Pirates of Penzance it was a wonderful experience. Thank you for sharing and maybe you have opened the door to her having some new fans when she was on stage she was a delight.
The most beautiful voice on the planet. By the time she did this she had already performed in arenas during which she was the solo act with a backing band. In performing in Pirates of Penzance she was delighted to be on an actual stage with curtains and proscenium with better acoustics than a hockey arena. She is a “student of music” in many ways. She wanted to explore and dabble but did not take on anything halfheartedly. She excelled in so many genres and worked very hard to do everything to perfection. People always comment about her making it look easy to make that beautiful sound when, in reality, she put hours and great effort in to honing her wonderful instrument and using it to the fullest. I’m her biggest fan and I am rambling. Thanks for a great reaction and for daring to do something different. 🌺✌️
No Debbie...I am her biggest fan. Lol! Just kidding. But I have been a fan since at least the early 70's. Bought all her albums, learned all the harmony parts and fantasized that she would hire me on the spot when she heard how great of a backup singer I was. Hah! Anyway saw her as often as possible when she came to San Francisco Bay Area. So glad that I did. ✌
@@brucedillinger9448 I saw her twice, both times in Boston in the 70’s and only wish I had gone to more of her shows. What a stunning talent! Also a great humanitarian and a very humble woman considering all of her success. And she needed no frills, no costume changes and certainly no autotune. Just her amazing instrument and a handful of great musicians to back her up. It’s always nice to meet another avid fan. Be safe and well 🌺✌️
@@debbiechang5781 agree! I was fortunate enough to see her at least 5 times, including with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra. Stellar performance! Here's to Linda. 🥂
The opera involves the hero who was mistakenly apprenticed to become a pirate instead of a (ship's) pilot. It was a satire of interest in pirates at the time due to the publication of Treasure Island, etc. but the pirates here are all tenderhearted and never rob from an orphan. The hero had been at sea for years and the only woman he has seen is his old nurse, so when he finishes his apprenticeship and get to land, he encounters the daughters of Major General Stanley, enough daughters of the right age to fill the women's chorus. This was also supposed to be a satire of Italian opera, with what composer Arthur Sullivan said, included all "their barnyard effects."
The apprenticeship was set until the hero turned 21 but later it was realized until his 21st birthday, and since he was born on Feb. 29th in leap year, his 21st birthday would not be reached until 1940. However, Linda here and he pledge to be true to each other until he turns 84.
I was lucky enough to see Linda in concert on the early 80’s! She could sing any genre of music. Her Spanish language albums are excellent! Thanks 🙏🏼 👵🏼💜☮️
I always loved this song the most from Pirates of Penzance since I was in a production locally and this song especially stuck with me. I didn’t solo, I was in the chorus, lol. This light opera is so funny!
Not a musical but an Operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan written in the 1800’s she did perform this on Broadway and was up for a Tony Award. She had tired singing Rock and Roll in Big Stadiums and wanted to try something different.
When you have time, watch "Pirates of Penzance". You'll love the humor in its lyrics, dance numbers, and storyline. A young Linda Ronstadt, and Kevin Kline is epic!
If I recall after Linda was done with this (Operetta) style and ready to return to a more pop sound she had to "relearn how to sing in that style". But as this is Linda Ronstadt we're talking about here I am sure she was determined to get it right. ✌
Listent to ADIOS written by Jimmy Webb and Arranged by Biran Wilson of the Beach Boys with his harmonies. Check out WHAT"S NEW with Nelson riddle in his orchestra. get the live version of her with the orchestra. and WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR
This is a light opera by Gilbert and Sullivan in 1879. Their operas are world-famous. I believe this is the only stage play or musical that Linda ever performed in. She sang everything, as I know you are learning. She could do it all! She took operatic singing lessons to learn how to use her voice differently to sing this type of music. You vocalize in a very different way in opera. As in any live performance of hers, you cannot tell the difference between the studio recording or the live version. She is just as perfect live.
Check Linda's 1975 version of I will always love you. Dolly Parton gave her the song because she liked her voice and well, Whitney Houston's version is based on Linda's.
Love Gilbert & Sullivan. Love Linda Ronstadt. Love that you reacted to it! I suggest you watch the entire Pirates of Penzance to appreciate it fully. Linda enjoyed stretching her horizons and when she approached people on Broadway to do operetta they fell over themselves to accommodate her when she proved she could handle the role.
I’m not a Patreon, but you do need to check out, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris. I believe they were known as the trio and made a couple of albums. They were really good friends, and all of course, stars in their own right. Pure beautiful voices.
Salvo, check out Linda’s take on big band music. I think she did 3 jazz albums in the 80’s. All super excellent, of course. Linda can do anything and pretty much has. Unrelated fun fact, the band The Eagles was formed after it’s founding members got together playing for Linda’s band in the early 1970’s.
GREETINGS EARTH GUY: I was delighted to see you reacting to this "operetta." You owe it to yourself to watch the film. Gilbert and Sullivan were very popular playwrights and composers 19th C in Britain. Many, many high schools have staged performances of this operetta. The story involves the plight of a young English boy who was taken by his nanny to serve a pirate until his 21st birthday. She was hard of hearding and thought her master said pirate when he said pilot. Alas. So, the story is of poor Frederick who was a slave to duty and never complained about the misunderstanding. He has just left the pirate gang and is reentering society when he meets the sisters. The movie is very campy.
just found your channel today and i love it.i think you would enjoy jellyroll somebody save me and son of a sinner please give the first one a look thanks for the great music.
Kudos to you for reacting to this! Most yt'rs seem to be overly concerned that EVERY one of their videos gets the most views possible and post the same songs everyone else has posted. Also you chose a live performance. Isn't Linda great? We lost a huge talent when her voice was silenced. ✌
So glad you found this. You would really love this whole show. Kevin Kline plays the Pirate King. There are some really funny songs. The line from Hamilton about Modern Major General is a reference to a patter song (think pre-Rap) from this show.
This operetta contains the most famous G&S often parodied - I am the very model of a modern major general." This also includes a band of cops who try to arrest the pirates, which led to the silent movie Keystone Cops. Also the music to Hail, Hail, the gang's all here.
Rex Smith was the lead male in this musical. Please research him more. He had a singing career of his own plus he had a brother who founded a rock band called the Starz.
That production (done as a part of Shakespeare in the Park that year) is what made me fall in love with this show. Kevin Kline is AMAZING in it, too! You gotta check out the whole production. I vastly prefer it to the studio film.
where did you find this recording??? this is the off Broadway production(Joseph Papp -Shakespeare festival) downtown before it went to Broadway. There's a movie version of this cast if you want to see the whole production!
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan? The band is call "Lovebites" They all The Beautiful Queens Metal band right now in the earth. They are really really World class musicians. Phenomenal. And they have a lot die hard fans too. The song is "The Hammer of Wrath" Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Big thanks🙏
You still have yet to do any of the numerous songs she’s known and remembered for during the 70s (with the exception of Desperado.) instead, you’ve been wasting time reacting to experimental stuff from later in her career - such as 2 songs from her late-80s mariachi album, and this obscure Pirates of Penzance piece - which nobody has heard of!!!
@@evanhughes1510 She's "known" for everything, and Penzance has been known since 1880. Also, Mariachi isn't "experimental", and those albums sold millions and won her Grammys. I was hoping Salvo would cover the work she did with Nelson Riddle next. There's more to her career than what you like.
@@classiclife7204 And there’s more to her career than the stuff *you* like. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Nelson riddle, and mariachi etc. were great and all, but they came *later* in her career. Not saying he shouldn’t see it, but it’s more logical that he first see the 70s rock/pop peak era of her career, since that’s what become famous on, and she sounds amazing in the belting songs she does. In the 80s, she branched out into new wave/punk, Nelson riddle stuff, and Latin/mariachi, and it would make more sense for him to delve into that stuff secondarily, after first hearing some of what she did in the 70s, with the hits she made out of other people’s songs with her powerful vocals. Also how she started with Stone Poneys. It is unbalanced for him to begin with her latter-era content and continue disproportionally reacting to that period, while neglecting to do her classic 70s period. It does not give him the proper picture of Linda as an artist, because her 70s rock/pop/country was a huge part of the picture of her career.
Dude why don’t you do actual songs/hits of her from her recorded albums?? Instead you keep doing all these side project things of hers, like this Broadway performance, her Spanish/mariachi songs etc. Do her actual radio hits! So annoying how you still haven’t done any of her best known recordings in the 70s! Tracks of My Tears, Lose Again, Someone to Lay Down Beside Me, You’re No Good, Colorado, Ooh Baby Baby, Long Long Time, Blue Bayou, Heat Wave, Tumblin Dice, Easy For You to Say, Somewhere out There, the Moon’s a harsh mistress, Just One Look, It’s So Easy, When Will I Be Loved, Love Has No Pride…
now see, I love that this reaction channel is doing reactions to Linda Ronstadt that are more off the beaten path. I am one of those people who is thrilled that Linda Ronstadt is an artist who is popular on all of the music reaction channels. especially given the fact that she is no longer able to sing. I have seen many reactions on other channels to all of her actual radio hits, where this is only the second reaction I've seen to her doing "poor wandering one". and vocally what she is doing here is really really extraordinary given all of her previous hits. so I like watching reactions where she is really having to employ different techniques and hold her own. but I hear you. just voicing a different opinion. thanks for posting.

And they’re still great friends…forever ❤️
Salvo, check out Linda’s take on big band music. I think she did 3 jazz albums in the 80’s. All super excellent, of course. Linda can do anything and pretty much has. Unrelated fun fact, the band The Eagles was formed after it’s founding members got together playing for Linda’s band in the early 1970’s.
Amazing!
Well done for choosing the theatrical version!
Pen - Zance and its a place in Cornwall England. Who doesn’t love pirates?
just found your channel today and i love it.i think you would enjoy jellyroll somebody save me and son of a sinner please give the first one a look thanks for the great music.
R&R, Broadway show tunes, Anerican Standards, light opera, Latin, Country, you name it, Linda sang it.
Back then this was big news..now everyone from Gaga to Cher to Madonna branches out to multiple musical choices
You should watch the whole film this is excerpted from. It is so funny. My kids called this "the funny policemen movie".
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan?
The band is call "Lovebites"
They all The Beautiful Queens Metal band right now in the earth.
They are really really World class musicians. Phenomenal.
And they have a lot die hard fans too.
The song is "The Hammer of Wrath"
Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Big thanks🙏
I think she knocked it right out of the park and they can't stand that a Mexican did that
Is that really Kevin Kline on the album sleeve?
Yes; he plays the Pirate King in the 1983 film.
He did on the stage too.
If you can't see the words, like the text or closed captioned, you miss so MUCH.
This is light opera, not a musical.
The theatrical performance was wonderful - the movie while technically much better, lost a lot of the fun.
You'll have to watch the Forbidden Broadway version of this song...Poor warbling star, can't sing above an A natural....
Dude.
@@classiclife7204 what, dude?
This was a VIP Patreon request.
Side project? This was huge. Linda got a Tony nomination for this role.
