Changing the Australian flag is a topic that deserves greater consideration than this video alone provides. Comments have been kept open to allow for civil discussion on this matter. Before commenting, please consider reading our in-depth explanation of the case for a new Australian flag: www.tripleunionflag.com/why/
I support Australia having its own flag however the colours clash on this design and it suffers from the problem of dividing Australians into 3 groups. Even according to the explanation given in this video, the background colours represent different groups of people. So it is a divisive design. No divisive flag can suitably represent any nation which is supposed to be united.
I don’t see it as divisive when it is represented in its full form, but when it is in it’s shield form, I feel the whole point of unity is lost. It becomes a shield that implies the custodians and colonists are valued more than those who come after.
Still, it can't be denied that Australia was one of the colonies of the British Empire and the rest of the independent countries who broke away from it had their own flags. The current flag of Australia had become a butt of jokes because it was compared with New Zealand's flag, which had the same Southern Cross design
Fun facts: The only British Overseas Territory flag that doesn't have the Union flag is Gibraltar! The flag was adopted in November 1982 and is based on Gibraltar's coat of arms, granted by Royal Warrant from Queen Isabella I of Castile in July 1502! The castle represents its status as a strategic fortress, while the key represents Gibraltar being the key to the Mediterranean. And while Anguilla's flag has the Union flag, the shield on the flag is based off the Three Dolphins Flag during the brief time that Anguilla was its own country called the Republic of Anguilla in the 1960s (basically Anguilla kicked out St Kitts police and voted to leave St Kitts to be their own colony, then voted to become a republic, and finally the UK sent 300 troops). I definitely agree that the Seychelles flag stands out. That, Kiribati, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, and Barbados are my top five favorite country flags. The oblique bands of the Seychelles flag symbolize a dynamic new country moving into the future. Blue depicts the sky and the sea that surrounds the islands, yellow symbolizes the sun, red symbolizes the people and their determination to work for the future in unity and love, white symbolizes social justice and harmony, and finally the green depicts the land and natural environment that makes the Seychelles famous.
Exceptions exist, man, but the video refers to the majority of British Overseas Territories such as Montserrat, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, Pitcairn Islands, and Falkland Islands
Great thought went into the flag and we like how the design can be changed around for the shield idea and other official flags. But we also think there are a number of issues. 1. The black and blue have very poor contrast. 2. Changing the Commonwealth Star to 8 points means the flag has three different star designs (5, 7 and 8 pointed stars) and this makes the flag more complicated and confusing. 3. The stolen land symbolism is highly divisive. 4. It doesn't have a canton but the upper hoist is still the most prominent part of the flag and therefore the Aboriginal placement still gives them superiority over the other two groups.
Thank you for the kind words and thoughtful feedback on this flag design. We very much appreciate it. We would like to take this opportunity to address the concerns that you have raised about the design of the Triple Union Flag: 1. The decision to place black and blue fields next to each other is a compromise between ideal flag design, simplicity and recognisability. While it is not ideal to place these colours next to each other due to their tendency to appear too similar to the human eye, separating these three sectors with more design elements would overcomplicate the design. Alternatively, choosing different colours for the flag (such as a lighter blue) would undermine the clear connection between the Triple Union Flag and existing Australian flag designs. The chosen blue for this flag is Pantone 286C which is the brightest and most saturated blue colour of the standardised colour system. Provided manufacturing and printing protocols recognise the need for appropriate contrast between black and blue, and are tailored to achieve this, the choice of colours in this flag should not be a major concern. Indeed, several other official flags, such as the flag of South Sudan and the Torres Strait Islander Flag, are designed with blue and black fields placed next to each other. As a proof of concept, the Triple Union Flag has been manufactured with accurate reproduction of its colours. You can view images of this flag on our Instagram account: instagram.com/tripleunionflag/ 2. The design of the Triple Union Flag divides the Australian Flag into three distinct sectors to represent three different groups of people. Changing the number of points of the stars in this design, so that each sector contains unique stars, is a deliberate design choice to achieve this effect. There is only one difference between the stars of the current Australian Flag and the Triple Union Flag - a single point added to the largest star. This simple change can hardly be considered to be overcomplicating the design, especially given that the Union Jack, arguably more complicated on its own than any part of the design of the Triple Union Flag, is not a feature of this alternative Australian Flag design. 3. It should be noted that the symbolism of stolen Indigenous land is only one aspect and possible interpretation of the design of the Triple Union Flag. Nevertheless, this symbolism does not represent a controversial ideology but rather a historical fact. This is in contrast to the Union Jack in the canton of the current Australian Flag which is an intentionally designed symbol of the superior might of the British Empire. The oppression of First Nations people, and the dispossession of their lands, directly informs the reality of present-day Australia. The fact that acknowledgement of this reality is seen as divisive, while representations of colonial and post-colonial history remain unchallenged, suggests that it is an inadequate comprehension of Australian history, rather than the design of this flag, that is to blame for this divisiveness. 4. The design of the Triple Union Flag seeks to disrupt the form of the current Australian Flag which implies superiority of that which is contained in the canton on the upper hoist side of the flag. It is this flag design element, and not simply the placement of symbols in the upper hoist side of the flag, which has this specific connotation of superiority. As First Nations people are the descendants of the first Australians, the placement of the sector that represents them in the upper hoist side of the flag rightly grants them special recognition. However, it does not imply superiority - certainly not, at the very least, in the same way as the canton does in the current Australian Flag. The Triple Union Flag is a symbol of unity that is based on the convergence of three sectors at equal angles. Unlike the canton in the current Australian Flag, which can be easily replaced with another flag or symbol, the sectors of the Triple Union Flag are distinct yet related elements of a larger whole that only make sense within the form they create when combined together. No one sector in the Triple Union Flag can be considered to be superior to another.
@@tripleunionflag Thanks for your detailed response! Despite some of our criticisms, we like this flag overall, it's certainly very striking! Best of luck getting the flag out there and promoting it to the people of Australia. G'day, mate!
@@tripleunionflag There's nothing unique about the Aboriginal experience (of being a conquered human group). Unnecessary politically correct/"woke" pandering and symbolism won't change anything. What's your attitude towards every American you meet; whether from the USA, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Argentina etc etc? Do you state their flags are "inappropriate" for not having some symbolic reference in recognition of conquered inhabitants? What about two other famous examples of this same premise like Turkey & Japan? What would you say to a Turkish or Japanese person regarding their flags?!
The yellow on the Timor-Leste flag (by the way: Timor comes from timur which means east in Malay and Leste means east in Portuguese, so its name is literally East East) not only represents the independence struggle but also the traces of colonialism in the nation's history, as in the yellow found on the Portuguese flag. And the Mauritanian flag originally didn't include red! Between 2011 and 2017, Mauritania and Jamaica were the only two country flags without red, white, or blue. But under a referendum which also abolished the Mauritanian senate, both the flag and the anthem were changed. The anthem was changed to...Diet 20th Century Fox. Libya also once had a flag without red, white, or blue but that changed in 2011. So it's just Jamaica now. Another iconic flag is the DPRK flag! The red of the flag symbolizes the bloodshed by the Korean patriots and the invincible might of the people firmly united to support the Republic. The white symbolizes one land, one language, one culture of a monoethnic country, which has lived in purity. And blue stands for the gallant visage of the people and symbolizes the spirit of the Korean people fighting for world peace and progress.
I feel like if you need a 26 min. long video to explain the meaning of the flag design, maybe its a little overcomplicated. Combining elements of old flags seems to be a dead end for a truly unique and contemporary design. I personally think the golden wattle design is really good! Since those are the national colors, why not take a fresh approach and create something entirely new.
You say that replacing the Union Flag in the canton with the Aboriginal Flag should not be done, as superiority would simply be transferred from one group to another. Then you proceed to do precisely that. Angling the division line makes no difference, the flag still has a canton.
Ironically, while discussing misintepretting flag symbolism, you misinterpreted an aspect of the South African flag. While its understandable why you'd assume the red, white and blue section of the flag represents the dutch flag, it doesn't. It represents both the (dutch) Afrikaners and the British. The red was deliberately chosen to be neither the dutch nor the British red for this purpose.
My thoughts are that this flag is much too busy and complicated. The colours jar. I believe we need to follow the Canadian (and other modern) examples, which simply present one stylised symbol of the country. This symbol should bring no historical garbage with it, and be something new that all Australians can adopt and rally around. I also find it interesting that the conservatives among us who want to preserve “the flag our soldiers fought under” are in error. Our soldiers (may God bless them) fought under the red ensign, which is the same design as the present flag, but RED not blue.
I adore this flag and resonate with the arguments put forward. As a Aussie vexillographer I believe this flag is the most common sense option x creative.
I admire the thought which has gone into this, but the most important thing that a flag must do is inspire a sense of patriotism, and I get no such feeling looking at this, it just looks like a bunch of different flags thrown together. Yes, the southern cross is absolutely required on any new flag for Australia, and yes, aboriginal representation must equally be a part of it. But the Australian Colours are green and gold, and a new flag must represent that. There are many ways that the aboriginal peoples can be represented without just sticking the aboriginal flag on the design, which is effectively what this does, despite the claiming that the red represents the red ensign. A new flag needs to harmonise the aboriginal people with the later settlers, and be something that everyone can stand behind. I think this keeps the divide between the peoples, just says they are both represented, which hardly seems much better.
Lots of criticism in the comments. I feel like the flag is being held to standards that not even popular flags can stand to . In all honesty I love it, strong symbolism and really thoughtful design. A shame it doesn't seem to have gotten much traction.
It’s getting criticism because it’s an absolute disgrace of a design. It’s probably the only proposed Australian flag that somehow manages to piss off *every* ethnic group on the continent. The video keeps reiterating how the flag supposedly symbolises unity… and then goes on to show how divisive it is in every aspect of it.
@@KasabianFan44 Bro, that is misinterpretation of the flag, man. The flag tells the story of Australia's diverse people and how they came to be to form what is Australia today. Let's do a little experiment, alright? Try to draw a circle with its center in the intersection of the three sectors of the said flag, which would now become a pie, and each one of those sectors/slices represent one of the key chapters in Australia's history. Now, you try to take out one to two slices out of the graphical pie, you will then have the remaining slices not forming a complete circle at all, meaning to say, taking out any of the slices can mean that you don't sincerely acknowledge the key part of Australia's history
@@joseenriquejoson1994 Your “experiment” is the lamest analogy I have ever read mate. Do you even know what an _experiment_ is? You’re basically saying “the three *separate* slices of the history pie represent unity” - essentially repeating what the video said (thanks mate, but I was able to watch the video all by myself), but not providing any concrete explanation of how this unity is represented on the flag. They are just three random events, and you could argue that history itself is what brings them together - but this flag most certainly doesn’t. As for the “white border” thing - this doesn’t even make any sense. Three separate pieces are three separate pieces, whether they have a white line between them or not. This is nothing but your personal interpretation of what counts as “divisions”, and trying to pass off your opinion as a fact. Nice try bud. I sure hope you never become a journalist, because that’s just not how facts work. And to answer your question about the golden wattle flag - yes, it’s miles better compared to this abomination. It’s definitely not my favourite, but I’d still much rather have that as my flag. Hell, I would even rather keep the current flag than switch to this thing. Oh and the comment about “me being the only pissed one” is a hilarious lack of self-awareness. I’m pretty calm here, just expressing my personal opinion. Meanwhile, you just sent me no fewer than FOUR angry replies to my comment, in which you sound genuinely offended at what I said. Lol. What a hypocrite.
@@KasabianFan44 Look, I am really sorry for what happened earlier. I think your idea of the Golden Wattle may also work for the new Australian flag, but I think it would also help to make it co-official next to the Triple Union Flag with better tweaking of the colors next to it such as the other official flags Uruguay has apart from the National Pavilion one
I am of indigenous heritage and do not find the current flag unacceptable. It has been recognised for over 100 years and the Union Flag in the canton simply recognises a historical fact, not domination. If the US state of Hawaii can retain the Union flag in the canton in acknowledgement of its history, why cannot Australia? I do not find the triple union flag aesthetically pleasing.
I'm a bit surprised to hear you support keeping the current flag, but I do agree with your comment. I'm glad I ain't alone about realizing that Hawaii ass the Union flag in their flag. Thank you. Greetings from California. Although I'm American, I love Australia & want to visit one day🇺🇸💙🇦🇺

Tremendously well researched and presented argument from a symbolic standpoint. From an artistic point of view I'm slightly less convinced but ultimately that is just a personal opinion anyway. It might just be a case of 'getting familiar with it'. Very impressive.
@@croweater6814 The Canton is traditionally rectangular, which this flag clearly doesn't use. Instead it's dedicating only a quarter of the flag to represent the indigenous people, another quarter for the colonial rule and a full half on equal standing with the others as the present & future of all Australians. It's honestly quite ingenious. Perhaps it could be reversed, with the star layout flipped so it's not a mirror image, with the Blue half along the mast shaft and the other quater's on the other side. This would prioritise the present and future of all Australians while keeping the intent of the design in place. It would also form the more typical Unity shape with the lateral line pointed away from the Mast. That revision ought to satisfy your point of objection I believe, yes?

Absolutely, just because a lot of thought went into this video doesn’t mean it’s good. I don’t like the current Australian flag either, but the flag in this video is very divisive. A new Australian flag should have neutral symbols all Australians can get behind & not any explicit symbolism of aboriginal or white Australians.
Someone certainly found a way to keep themselves busy during the pandemic! A great design convincingly presented. Well done! Hadn't heard of this until today. The algorithm is so weird. What happened to make this appear in my feed randomly? (not complaining) 👍
As a American, I find this flag to be perfect for Australia, most of the previous alternate designs for an Australian flag has been un-stylish, and un-traditional. The flag promotes both Indigenous and colonial equality, My only critique is the idea of stolen land all land is "Stolen" and conquered but atlast, I understand the necessity.
It is stolen land and is recognised as such in Australia. We don't need an illinformed american sharing their illinformed views on a national topic. Bye bye now.
I also find it to be the perfect flag for America but replace the relevant parts, one for the native Indians, one for the Black Americans, one for the White Americans the one for the rest of who come to the United States of America. What you think?
@@fatheranthony4popeIronically, the same people who claim that Australia & the USA are stolen land don't call Argentina, Brazil, Uruguaya, and North African Arab countries such as Alegria stolen land despite indigenous peoples including the berbers in North Africa being genocided.
i only have one issue with this flag and that its that it seperates the groups of people in australia, even in the recent one word national anthem change they changed the word "young" to "one" and thats because we arent trying to seperate eachother, we are trying to come closer together and just realize we are all the exact same, Australians.
They changed that word from young to one because this land that you live on has a 40000+ history of the oldest continuous culture on earth. Not so young after all.
The Eureka flag has an established meaning, which would be diluted by using it as a national flag. Same issue with the Aboriginal flag. We would be much better off designing an entirely new flag that has no other purpose than representing Australia.
@G G our current flag is a British Blue Ensign, defaced, something Britain used all over their empire. It's not ours, it's a symbol of British colonialism, it is most definitely broken as a national symbol of Australia.
@G G Many do. Or at the very least, they see Australia and Australians as "of Britain". They hold British History, or the myth of that history, as sacred. They love having Britain as the main feature of our national flag. Even among those who want a new flag, there are a disturbing number of people who want to keep "British History" as the main feature. Our culture has some serious issues concerning racism! And apathy and ignorance, which may be the reason you laughed at my comment?
@@bcoo111, We should also get rid of the British monarchy as the British royals were responsible for the massacres and biological warfare of the Aboriginals with the openly racist and draconian White Australia Policy (WAP). Captain Cook landed in Botany Bay in April 20th 1770 by using Terra Nullius, "land belonging to no one" to claim it as colonial property of the British Empire under the British Crown. Many different Aboriginal tribes with various cultures and languages have been living on the Australian continent for more than 30,000 years. A republic needs to acknowledge Australia's brutal colonial past and reconcilate with the First Nation people's by signing one or several peace treaties.
this was a great assessment on why Australia needs to change its flag and how should be done. while i completely agree with all the symbolism i cant help but feel like the main aesthetics of the flag could do with some work as the colours dont seem to work well with each other and its kind of hard to look at. other then that its a great video

As an Australian with indigenous blood, my father being Aboriginal, we Wiradjuri mob... I must say, this 'Triple union flag' is awful... I, myself as an Aboriginal man, I don't have an issue with the current flag, nor do anyone in my family, I feel, in my own opinion, changing the flag just leads to further segregation and division. But if this will help bring us ALL together so be it. You spent almost 10 mins in the video slagging off the meaning of having the UK in the canton and following old colonial traditions... But then you've kept the colours & put the sun and black up in the canton, no sense has been made... If you're going to get rid of the Union Jack all together you're going to have to get rid of the blue too. The blue isn't Australia's colour. Neither the blacks or the whites, it was a background expenditure of the Scottish St. Andrew Satire. The southern cross isn't unique to us either, I'd drop that too.. The only people the new flag needs to incorporate, is Aboriginal People of this Great Southern land and Australians, that's it. I'm not being racist but why would we need a flag to represent the world or immigrants? No one does it for us. Immigrants that come to Australia become Australians anyway through citizenship, the flag will be theirs once they become Australian. And, if they're born here to immigrant parents, then they're Australian by birth anyway... I'd propose a horizontal tricolour flag of 'Green, white and gold with a red sun and black beams in the centre', representing the indigenous peoples gathered around the sun at a meeting place. Any idea is an idea. Australia's colours are Green and Gold.... Green on top, Gold on the bottom, Separate them by white (white is a colour of Peace.. Peace between the two) Aboriginal colours are Black, Red & Yellow... Red & black sun in the centre of the flag ontop of the white background... Yellow and Gold are fairly similar the gold could represent both nationalities. Seeing as we are still a constitutional monarchy we keep the original Australian flag as a Royal flag only. Basically what Canada has done. Again, this is just my idea. No matter what change is done, you're not going to please everyone. Unless we all work together there is going to be division and segregation in this country and for and we can't keep blaming colonisation, something that happened over 200 years ago. We aren't a colony anymore, the whites here today aren't the ones that colonised and the blacks here today aren't the nomad wanderers the colonisers thought we were. It's upto us, today to start unifying as ONE. If you took the time to read this, thank you for reading and understanding.
@@CheeseyBoi10 Well no, India's flag is saffron (orange) white and green... Australia's colours are gold and green. Also, there are many flags that are similar in colours and designs, yet each flag is unique to that specific country.. India and Niger share and almost identical flag, Ireland and Côte d'Ivoire do also.. They all have the exact same colours.. Where my proposal would be more along the lines of say Sucumbíos of Ecuador or Sesquilé of Colombia.. The gold would be more of a darker yellow than orange.
Interesting proposal! My only problem with tricolours, whether vertical or horizontal, is that they've pretty much been done to death, and feel like pretty much the most common design a flag could possibly go for, AKA France, Germany, Ireland, Peru, Nigeria, Bolivia, the Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, Argentina, India, Italy, etc, etc, etc. That's why I personally like the Triple-Union Flag, it's more than just a couple of colourful rectangles with an emblem on it, but I admit the symbolism in your proposed design does indeed hold weight!
>The southern cross isn't unique to us either, I'd drop that too.. It's there, unchanged, to assure continuity and recognition of the current flag. it's there on the Canberra flag for instance. >why would we need a flag to represent the world or immigrants? because non-indigenous people were born here without necessarily being ill-intentioned, they're living in Australia too. >'Green, white and gold with a red sun and black beams in the centre' representing the indigenous peoples That's great and all but once again the goal of the video isn't a redesign of the aboriginal flag, but of the national flag. You might be missing the point of the video.
@@abarette_ Okay none of your points rectify any issues though... First point, the southern cross is on the flag of Canberra & I am more than aware of the meaning for it. I've stated that the southern cross is not unique to Australia... It is seen all over the southern hemisphere, it is even on the flag of Brazil, a world away. Next. Second point... By immigrants I'm not referring to Australians, if you read by comment properly, I'm not being rude in any way, or I'm not trying to be rude, but you trying to nitpick what I've stated and trying to pull it apart and then you're trying to make your own points with things I didn't state... Immigrants is referring to people coming here not people born here as Australians... I shall recap what I wrote seeing as you must have misread [3rd paragraph ". Immigrants that come to Australia become Australians anyway through citizenship, the flag will be theirs once they become Australian. And, if they're born here to immigrant parents, then they're Australian by birth anyway..."] Immigrants become Australian through citizenship, you move to a country you adopt that country, it's culture, it's flag why would you move to a country and expect that country to incorporate YOUR foreign culture or identity on it? No.. Next My idea was for a new flag not a recreation of the Aboriginal flag... Please again, reread what I wrote... Green and Gold are the colours of AUSTRALIA, not the Aboriginals.. So I suggested a flag using Australia's national colours including Red and Black used for the Aboriginals to create a new flag meshed with the TWO nationalities... Please, I didn't miss the point of the video, you just have a hard time reading and understanding... As my point is for Aboriginals and Australians. Within my text "Australians" doesn't just mean white people, it means any one born here as an Australian, I am not sorry about non Australian born individuals moving here as they can BECOME Australian through citizenship anyway, so why make a flag for them when they can adapt? I urge and encourage people to please read and understand peoples points and arguments before trying to reply with your own irrelevant remarks accusing the OC of not understanding... I would also like to add to the note that ANY form in which an Aboriginal even considers merging with Australians at all is one massive step towards a better Australia, you're lucky me, an Aboriginal Australian is even on board trying to reconcile a very horrific and tragic past... Thank you
I'm from the US and wish our flag could change. I was a child of 6 or 7 seeing the flag-draped caskets of the troops returned from Vietnam on the tv so I have never felt good about the flag. Maybe taking pride in our astronauts would have helped, but then I quickly learned about President Nixon lying about the war and the flag came to symbolize a killing machine. That conviction settled in my mind long before I learned about the deaths of the non-Americans in our wars.

The flag should not perpetuate the racial division of our population, we are one nation. The design should reflect the states and territories of Australia and include the Southern Cross.
@@Andy-dh9tq Very True but Canada is historically very diverse than australia (who are mostly whites who emigrated from specifically from britain). Canada having their own international image came naturally so that’s what led to the change of Canada’s flag. It was done to satisfy The Natives + The French (who founded Canada). Besides that large portion of Italians, Irish, Portuguese, Eastern Europeans, East Asians, Blacks have emigrated to Canada early 1900’s ...that helped too. You're better off going with either one of these three or the kangaroo flag. One simple symbol is most recognisable. I'm Canadian, and we don't need a flag which represents every single group in this country. I'm fine with Australia keeping its flag though.
As an Australian I do really like this design but I’m a stickler for tradition and I believe we should have the union Jack in our flag so the design I’ve come up with uses the Eureka flag as a base has the union Jack in the top left corner the aboriginal flag in the top right the Torra straight Islander flag in the bottom left The Commonwealth Star as the centre star or maybe as all five of the points and in the bottom right I’ve just drown a southern cross but I’ve also thought of maybe having the coat of Arms or something but I caught the Australian multicultural flag not that I think we should necessarily change of flag in the first place but if we did I want want something with the Union Jack
While the yellow sun on the black clashes a bit for me, everything ls about the flag is amazing, and god, those civil and miitary naval and air ensigns go hard.

So many confusing points or extreme stretches being made. First of all, proponents to change New Zealand's flag lost fair and square. I know butthurt when I hear it and that was pure butthurt my guy. The whole 120° angle meeting place so they are all "equal" is ridiculous. Who cares about displaying the same flag en masse. The Canadian flag was made to appease the French as maple trees are mostly associated with Quebec. It's not exactly representative for people who live in British Columbia for example. Also, you are assuming that every immigrant hates the current flag. ummm, maybe actually provide polls and statistics on that claim rather than just assuming. An immigrant from Mexico who moves to Canada isn't going to complain about Canada's flag just because it doesn't represent them. It's a far fetched point you're making. Oh and that whole, the current Australian flag is associated with far right bigots etc. etc.... ummm you do realize overtime those bigots you speak of will eventually adopt the new flag. Look at the US, look at Canada. And no one wants to keep changing the flag. It's a completely moronic argument to make. The whole stars have the same points as a compass is a stretch. No one cares. Australia isn't unique to maps and geography so who cares if it is the same as a compass. I'm open to the idea of changing it (though I'd rather not) but two points, your flag is fugly and it comes across as biased rather than actually bringing up polls. Here in Canada, we still use the ensign design for our militaries. WWII vets would never allow that to change and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say yours wouldn't either. Personally, just keep the flag as is and fly the aboriginal flag alongside it.
In your mission to create a flag that ‘unites’ Australians, you have ironically done the complete opposite. The mere visual compartmentalisation of the groups represented on your design, is an immediate undeniable visual message of disunity, not to mention that your symbolism and overall design are unnecessarily complex. The doctrine that every group of people must be directly represented on a national flag or else the flag is invalid, is a fundamentally misguided thought. A national flag, particularly one belonging to a country as diverse and as vast as Australia, must use the most absolute abstract symbolism possible and must never incorporate the standards associated with specific sub-populations. A notable example of a flag done right is the national flag of India, which represents over 1.3 billion people, 700+ unique ethnicities, and over 100 recognised languages. The Indian flag is composed of only a tricolour of green, orange, and white with a blue wheel in the middle, yet it is an iconic and memorable design 🇮🇳. Another notable flag is that of China, which represents a population of over 1.4 billion people composed of many different unique ethnicities and languages, using only a field of red and 5 gold stars in the canton 🇨🇳. Perhaps the most notable is the flag of Russia, which represents 18% of the entire world’s landmass, over 110 million people, and 23 autonomous republics with only a tricolour of blue, white and red 🇷🇺.
@@davis7099 You can integrate "identity politics" into your flag in an aesthetically pleasing way. For example, India 🇮🇳 has green for the Muslims, orange for the Hindus and white to symbolize peace. Similarly, Ireland 🇮🇪 has green for the Catholics, orange for the Protestants and white for peace. There's also South Africa 🇿🇦 which is a mix of the African 🇯🇲 and Dutch 🇳🇱 colors. But this "Triple Union Flag" is just ugly and cluttered.
First of all, it makes sense for India's flag. But China and Russia? Dude, the former represents the authoritarian CCP, the government that is currently screwing up China itself and has a past association with the old USSR. Also, about Russia's flag, it was even older before the USSR and is not unique at all. It was even the flag of the old Russian Empire too and the blue, white, red are used by other Slavic nations such as Serbia, Croatia, and oh, get this, Slovakia and Slovenia (they sound too similar) had the same color pattern too like Russia's, only with different coats of arms on them. Exceptions still do exist such as Bosnia or Montenegro.
i loved everything you said (and fantastic video presentation. stunning.), and I 100% agree with your reasons for changing the flag. I really reeeeeally wanted to like the design. But in my lay opinion, I must confess that I did not... it just looks too design-by-committee.. that there are too many ideas (visually and what they represent) on one flag, and the effect of each idea is diminished. I suspect to win over a population, it will need to be instantly striking, likeable, and easy to understand (even if there are multiple layers of meaning), and possibly something that people are already familiar and comfortable with. Kangaroos and green-and-gold are obvious examples, but I also somewhat agree with your reasons for dismissing them as not representing Australian people / history. Anyway, I wish I could be of more help, other than saying that I truly hope that this movement gathers momentum, I'll always vote for a new flag over the existing one.
@@Shadoww733Yes, it does. So what if it has the Union flag? Fiji is a Republic & it still has it. Hate me all you want, but the Australia Flag looks better than most Arab flags, such as the flags of Palestine, Iraq, and Algeria.
Great video supporting a messy and busy design. It gives a good point that the new flag should not be a redisign of the old one and then brigs a proposal which is a redisign. Then the symbolism of the elements is randomly chosen (seven continents, five oceans). Instead on basing the form on the symbolism it needs to present, here the symbolism adapts to the chosen form. It also resembles Nepalese flag, but that's the least of its sins.
As an American, I should butt out. However, I have always considered the Australian flag to be very attractive and well designed just the way it is. Sorry, but I find that every other version that I have seen is very off-putting. Same with New Zealand. Leave well-enough alone. Do nothing and the numbers of those who hate thier flag will be very small. All this clamoring is just divisive, and gets more people into the argument in greater numbers. Pretty soon, they will be fist fights
I don't like the tilting of the military symbols 22:56. The slanted line separating the colours on the flag is all good but the symbols (especially the RAAF roundel) should stay orthodox.
It had the Irish flag up there as people not represented on the Australian flag but it is the red x on the union flag is the st patricks cross representing Ireland pre independence
Litterally no one in Ireland or even any of the overseas diaspora want anything to do with the st. patrick’s cross, it‘s something the brits came up with in the late 18th century in order to fit their flag for the 1800 act of union. It is personally sth. completely outlandish and has nothing to do with being or feeling irish in a sense as many coin it: “a british invention for a people who never used it”. Ya might as well link it to old age Spain for all the good it ever did..
The Australian flag is extremely iconic, my friend. The US flag is based off the British East India Company flag and still represents all people of tons of different people from lots of different places. It’s not about what it was, it’s about what it is.

The US formed its own identity by symbolically removing the Union Jack from the upper left corner as a way to show they didn't want to be a part of the UK anymore during the revolution This flag still has the Southern Cross, so it's based off the colonial flag while at the same time, symbolically removing the Union Jack to show Australia moving on its own path

Why do so many people want the current Australian flag along with even the UK flag alone to end up in the same fates as the Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, or Kingdom of Portugal flags?

This design looks really good but the color contrast between black and blue looks a little clumsy. Also it missed the green and gold. I feel it would be really amazing to have the boundary split between the 3 shapes to have a white stripe with green and gold borders (something similar to the South African flag). This would fix the color issue as well.
For any non-Australians watching this, please be aware that the vast majority of Australians do not agree with the message of this video, and are happy with the current flag. If a referendum happened the flag proposed in the video definitely be unsuccessful.
Frankly, I get the feeling that majority of Australians have gone nuts in the last few years. Changing the flag? Voting about having some freaky aboriginal councils or whatever? That shit is nuts.
Why would the Civil Air Ensign have the Royal Australian Air Force roundel on it? Also the section representing Indigenous Australians is still in the canton of the flag. While personally I don't see that as an issue (like how I also don't see having the Union Jack there as an issue) you mentioned that you believe it is a problem in your previous statements on both the Union Jack and the Indigenous Australian Flag being used themselves as cantons, so how is that any different. I like the flag, it's a good design, and if it ever were to become official, it would be fine in my eyes. Tho I wouldn't actively campaign, since I think the current Australian flag works fine as well.
Regarding the 7-point star representing the continents, i don't think Australia has any immigrants from Antarctica. Overall though, i like this design, especially in comparison to the current one.
I have 2 issue should not the federation star be the same as the one on the coat of arms and since we have yellow on the flag could it not be the same for federation star or all stars be yellow or wattle gold.

The “princes flag” with the old Dutch east India company orange, white and blue horizontal tricolour and the three flags in the middle of the Union Jack, OFS and Transvaal republics was adopted in 1928. You are correct that it was the flag before the adoption of the current flag I. 1994. However; in the 18 years prior between 1910 and 1928; the flag featured in this video was the flag of South Africa. And as I understand it; South Africa’s merchant ships still flew it until the 1960s.
I don't think it's the most "beautiful" flag, but it's so meaningful and (given the Kiwi referendum) makes sense as not extremely divergent in symbolism while being distinct. It seems to me the reason for the NZ flag staying the same was the fern didn't have great symbolism so keeping the flag as is was seen as no worse than an uninspired design. I think the K shape of the left devices is extremely underrated and I think you do a wonderful job explaining its significance. After the Minnesota state flag there's a precedent for this lovely 'inverted' triangle. Some have said the canton still feels like it exists, and I agree but that just points to the meaning that the aboriginal people are the stewards of the land and should receive more rights to that end. Regardless, the juxtaposition of so much history in a complex but not overwhelming flag is extremely admirable; if I can teach a country's whole history from their flag that's pretty amazing!
I will miss the current Australian flag if it gets replaced, tho. I hope it doesn't get banned & treated the same way as the third German Reich flag or the pre 1994 South African flag.
I Agree, which is why I like the Golden Wattle flag

But flags do tend to blow with the wind.
We would like to take this opportunity to address the concerns that you have raised about the design of the Triple Union Flag:
1. You can view images of this flag on our Instagram account: instagram.com/tripleunionflag/

@@tripleunionflag just about any country is made up of stolen land

You say that replacing the Union Flag in the canton with the Aboriginal Flag should not be done, as superiority would simply be transferred from one group to another. Then you proceed to do precisely that. Angling the division line makes no difference, the flag still has a canton.
Nah. A canton is another flag pasted onto a flag in the corner. The Aboriginal sun is an integral part (nearly a third) of the flag itself.

If you think abos need to be "Represented" on the Aussie flag, you are a conquered, demoralised person, and your view is illegitimate.
You people have gone nuts. Just give them a piece of land and let them run things over there themselves.

What you think?

i only have one issue with this flag and that its that it seperates the groups of people in australia, even in the recent one word national anthem change they changed the word "young" to "one" and thats because we arent trying to seperate eachother, we are trying to come closer together and just realize we are all the exact same, Australians.
They changed that word from young to one because this land that you live on has a 40000+ history of the oldest continuous culture on earth. Not so young after all.

Amen

¿Why not just use The Eureka Flag?
Edit: Okay now I'm really starting to like this
The Eureka flag has an established meaning, which would be diluted by using it as a national flag.
@G G changing to an Australian flag would force our population to see ourselves as Australian, instead of British.
Lol
The first flag at 1:00 is not Colonial Maldives flag, but the flag of British Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
Peace between the two)
Aboriginal colours are Black, Red & Yellow...
If you took the time to read this, thank you for reading and understanding.
you are making a Indian flag copy
>'Green, white and gold with a red sun and black beams in the centre' representing the indigenous peoples
That's great and all but once again the goal of the video isn't a redesign of the aboriginal flag, but of the national flag.
No.. Next
My idea was for a new flag not a recreation of the Aboriginal flag...
Thank you

I love the Australian flag and I don't want it to change

Great video supporting a messy and busy design. It gives a good point that the new flag should not be a redisign of the old one and then brigs a proposal which is a redisign.
Now you just have to talk about The Natiónal Anthem

I highly agree that we should change our flag
As an Australian I don’t think it should be changed.
As an Australian, I think it should be changed. Literally has another countries flag on our flag. Literally no creativity there
@@Shadoww844Why? Hawaii has a union jack in their flag & they love it. Also, there are 3 other countries with a union jack: New Zealand, Fiji, and Tuvalu. Tuvalu tried changing their flag before, but it got backlash, so they changed it back. The only reason Hawaii isn't a country is because of the USA.
Also, no creativity? This is actually the most creative flag that has the Union Jack. Even more unique than Fiji.
@@whydoiexistrnwhy it's litterally almost the same as New Zealand
Lol, this flag looks like pac-man is trying to eat the Australian flag.
Doing a bit of colour swapping with the Greenlandic flag I came around to something like a black/blue flag with a yellow/red sphere, still feel like the colours contrast badly, but perhaps something like that would work, lob in the souther cross if you will.
how do I make my own flag?🤔
Don't forget to include the Bolivian flag. Those 5 Bolivians in Australia deserve representation, and it would be a travesty not to recognize the important role they played in building the country.
You criticise several decent designs as being stylised versions of the current flag, and then propose your own stylisation
I'll never give up our Union Jack.
Good for you.
But how is that relevant when you are not the nation of Australia?

You can sit there and type that and even back it up with action, but it won’t make any difference to Australia the nation changing the flag.

>"most importantly, flags need to be unique"
>shows great flags that are not unique
He means they should be distinguishable enough even if they had similar design motifs
1:09 This is not the flag used by south africa before 1994,. They used an orange, white and blue tricolour with three small flags in the middle of it
The “princes flag” with the old Dutch east India company orange, white and blue horizontal tricolour and the three flags in the middle of the Union Jack, OFS and Transvaal republics was adopted in 1928.
The Australian flag shouldn't be treated similarly to those 2 flags I just mentioned. It would also be sad to no longer see the current Australian flag 🇦🇺 at the UN headquarters anymore.
@@whydoiexistrnwhy Given it would still be referenced in the blue half, there is no reason the "old" australian flag would be banned.
@@abarette_Even though many young Australians think that the current flag is "racist" or "pro-genocide" just because it has a Union Flag (🇬🇧) on it? Someone even claimed that the Australian flag isn't much different from the N*zi Germany flag.

Good suggestion for a new flag. Sales pitch need to be far shorter. Five to ten minutes at the most.
