- In this video, I'll show you the 5 best Canadian acoustic guitars under $800. These are the top 5 acoustic guitar made by trusted and respectable brands from Canada that I think are worth checking out in 2021!
This list includes all of the brands that are inside the Godin Company. And, while I'm sure there are plenty of guitars out there that are also under $800, I'll need your help to discover those. So be sure to leave a comment in the description about your favorite Canadian-made acoustic guitars that are under $800!
Now, back to our list! I chose each guitar on this list because they strike the perfect balance between quality, value, and sustainability. There are so many incredible things going on at each of these guitar builders, and I really hope you take a chance to check them out individually.
Once we're done with the 5 best canadian guitar under $800, I want to take a moment and talk about how awesome the live guitar party at TAC was. What an incredible turnout, and it was so great talking with all of the TAC members and hearing about their experiences.
Last but not least, I want to recognize the incredible amount of work Santa Cruz Guitar Company has done for the industry over the last 45 years. In fact, to help recognize and celebrate it, SCGC actually made a video highlighting the challenges they've faced over the last few years. I highly recommend you check it out!

I have a Seagull S6 original, and I love it. It’s the guitar that I recommend to every beginner I come across. It’s super affordable for the sound you get, and the wood is treated to last longer up here in Canada. It’s the best you can get for the money in my opinion.
I’m a proud Canuck, loving the spotlight shone on our excellent high-value guitars. When on virtual meetings, I often put my fabulous Godin in the background - to enhance the view for others, and as a reminder to myself to play it (out of sight tends to mean out of mind). Great episode, as always. Merci bien!
Just bought my 'step up' guitar; a Godin Metropolis Classic. After playing many guitars that cost twice or more (I was ready to buy a Taylor 214CE) I finally got my hands on the Metropolis and didn't have to think twice. All solid wood, amazing tuners, a neck that feels just amazing...I would have to have spent so much more to get similar quality from Taylor, Martin or Gibson!
First guitar was a Seagull S6, second was a Seagull S6 Coastline. They were both excellent guitars. My son still has the cedar top. For the money, the fit and finish can’t be beat.
Strange serendipity, I'm about to buy an S6. Been doing the research for months and now I've just gotta do it. I like the fact that the S6 is Cedar topped with cherry back and sides, warm top brighter body.
Serendipitous indeed! I just picked a used A&L 12 string this past weekend with a cedar top and cherry sides. Sat in the guitar showroom doing research on A&L and the Godin family of guitars. Couple of days later, this pops up in my feed.
I own 2 martins and an S6. I play the S6 most often. Love it.
Seagull Coastline Slim cutaway is mine. An absolute gem of a guitar. Easily stacks up with a Martin or Taylor in my experience. Was perfectly setup right off the shelf. The sound is outstanding and it keeps getting better over time.
I have a Seagull 25th Anniversary guitar that I’ve had for about 10 years. Solid mahogany back and sides with a Sitka spruce top. I love it! Great sound.
Hey Tony, so glad you did a segment on my favourite guitars! I own a Simon and Patrick concert faded blue and this is my go to guitar and this year I’ve acquired Norman b18 cherry burst Parlor, both are beauties and play great!
Tony P. brings it again! Awesome show Tony, Thanks!! Love the Godins by the way...
Thank you for this Tony! I am the proud owner of a Seagull S6 Original guitar that I purchased in 2019. Really happy with it!!!
Just gifted my 21-year-old Simon and Patrick to my daughter, who at 21, has said she wants to start playing guitar. Life goal accomplished.
Do assist her with sources of inspiration Scott in order to keep her in the groove.
Well? Is she still playing? I just got back into it myself! Loving it again!!!
Started back playing after a 20 years stop. Bought a Norman B-20. I am a lefty so options are limited. But I love it, kept it for 2 years, until I upgraded to a Martin 000-15. But I really love the sound and the playability. I sometimes run into a few videos I recorded with, and the sound still surprises me.
Great video Tony! I am from Montreal, and happy to see this one
I played a Martin D28 and a Godin Metropolis Natural back to back and I purchased the Godin immediately as it was $3,000 less. Now, the Metropolis is almost $2,000 but it is Godin's top-shelf.
I've been a huge fan of Godin guitars for years. I have a Simon & Patrick Woodland CW Mini Jumbo, a Richmond Dorchester and a Godin A12. They offer unbeatable bang for your buck and the range of instruments they build is astonishing. They were one of the first luthiers to do that whole acoustic-that-plays-like-an-electric thing, especially with their electro-classical guitars. Thanks Tony, for a well-deserved shout-out to the Godin family.
1st guitar was S6 original but I traded up for a 2001 Seagull artist mosaic single cutaway. It is sitka spruce top with rosewood back and sides. I fell in love and still have my “Rosie” today! She was one of the first artist series made at the new 25,000 square foot factory in 2001. She was made on 09/15/2001, as far as I cantell from the serial number. She’s the best!!
Thank you for featuring Godin. I never intended for it but all of my guitars currently are Godin. I started with my Simon and Patrick woodland A3T CW spruce- that is still my main guitar. Bought her for my 30th birthday. I picked up a Seagull coastline grand parlour in 2015. My newest addition it was a gift my for my 40th birthday to myself it’s not actually an acoustic but similar- I picked up a Godin 5th Avenue CW Kingpin II HB. I love all three of my guitars and I’m very excited to see this brand getting some attention- is it really deserves it. They are beautiful looking and beautiful sounding well-made guitars!
I have 5 Godins also👍👍👍
Ned Ludd,
I bought a nylon stringed guitar. I lost the use of my fret hand and wasn't able to fret on Steel stringed. It helps learning to fingertips as well. Plus, the tone is different, and fantastic.
I own 2 Seagull guitars, for the time being…
My first was the Cedar Top 12 string with a Q1 pickup.
My second Seagull purchase was the Flame Maple Performer series; also with the Q1 pickup.
Now, 1st on my ‘wish list’ is the Artist Studio Pepino ; with the Q2 pickup….
Love these guitars and HIGHLY RECOMMEND them ! Whichever model suits your needs.
The playability, tone, craftsmanship and dedication to producing great quality instruments is why I keep coming back to these beautiful guitars. Not to mention the price point !
You can’t go wrong.
Thanks for this article on Godwin. I have a Seagull S6, two Art and Lutherie and one Simon and Patrick. I love playing all of them and as you mentioned the quality and prices on these are hard to beat.
Nice to see you and hear that us Canadians are getting a little love for our fabulous godins
Love your videos!! Thanks!! And your spot on! about the S6 Original! Absolutely Love Mine!! 👍🎸🎶🎶
Seagull guitars sounds like seagulls
Art and lutherie lives up to the name
They are absolutely stellar!
I like playing my seagull in DADGAD
And the art and lutherie in DACGAC tuning at 432hz
Love the TAC challenges. Worked on the Thunderlips lick this morning. The open D tuning sounded great. My pull-offs (among other skills) have improved by doing challenges like this one. Harmonics are relatively new to me as well. Lots of fun. I have 3 Godin guitars. All sound great. I have a ‘Natural Elements’ mini-jumbo that is well within the $800 limit.
Seagull S6 was the guitar I learned on in 98, and I still play it...and it still sounds great!!
Heck yea so happy to see this episode
Have an old (1995ish)Simon Patrick s-p 6cw spruce, wonderfull guitar keeps getting better with age!
I have a Norman and it is fantastic. The action needed to be lowered at the nut though, just using a capo was a quick fix. Fantastic sound quality and playability for the money. The best on the market as a first guitar. It is hard to beat a Godin (Seagull, Art & Lutherie, La Patrie, or Norman) as a first guitar. I think it is access to the local high-quality spruce, cedar and wild cherry as well as their workforce. 95% of the population in the small rural Quebec town, La Patrie, these guitars are manufactured in works for Godin. You need to pay 50-100% more to get the same quality from Taylor or Martin.
Really looking forward to next weeks "inlay" theme. I have a pair of high-end PS and K-series Taylors that are awesome, Kepma Guitars have similar models, but for me personally, the queen of inlay art is the one and only Wendy Larrivee. Have a nice day, Tony!!
I have a Seagull S6 slim , coastline series cut away . Love it , play it more than my Martin D12E . This is a guitar that I will always keep . I have a S Yairi built 12 string form the 80`s , it`s a little beat up but sounds awesome .
I've been playing on a Godin Simon & Patrick for over 20 years. Bought it for around 650$ after spending 6 years looking for the best possible lefty acoustic, checking Taylors & Martins...the S&P just had twice the fullness for an eighth of the price.
My Seagull SWS competes with my D28 and my Martin blackwood Carpathian VTS for real. Although I do love my Martins.
The first guitar I bought after doing my research was a Seagull SWS Concert Hall, which was followed up by a Seagull Grand (14 fret parlor). I've since bought a Martin 00-18V which I love, but I can't part with my wonderful Seagulls - they have a punch and sweetness to their tone that wins me over every time.
I have a Seagull S6 based on your recommendation Tony in video five guitars for beginners. I love the sound of the S6 and it stays in tune.
I bought an S6 a few months back and love it. I was going to buy a Martin D13 but after playing both, the S6 played more brightly and the deep tone is Martin like. But, I have fat fingers and the 1.8 neck fits my fingers perfectly.
I own a Simon and Patrick songsmith in burgundy and I absolutely love it. Best money I've spent on an acoustic. I also own an older BC Rich acoustic that I picked up for all of $40 Canadian.
I have the Seagull Performer CW and it sounds loud, bright and chimey with lots of sustain.. I just love it, it has a very good preamp and its flame maple makes it look as good as it sounds.. The 12 strings Art and Lutherie Legacy is also an awesome affordable 12 string. Then again it has plenty of resonance with perhaps more bass presence then the Seagull that is almost all maple except for the top ..
I have a bourbon burst Simon and Patrick Songsmith CW with the Q1T electronics. I love the 24.75” scale length, the shape of the neck, and the vintage aesthetic. The guitar sounds great but maybe even better tuned a 1/2 step down or in open D. Very proud to own a high quality guitar built right here in Canada.
Loved your video on the different pickups and my now favorite DPA 4099...was going to subscribe but just noticed the Blackhawks jersey and just can't do it...🤣 JK...always loved Belfour...Eddie the Eagle. ❤ subscribed
I have 2 guitars - both Canadian. A Godin A6 Ultra and the Seagull S 12 Concert. Love them both!
My bandmate loves his cedar top Seagull. That thing keeps up with my Martin, which was twice the price, no problems. Poor man’s Martin indeed!
I have a 2018 Norman ST68 CW cedar top with cherry sides and back...very nice sounding guitar!
Great post again Sir.
I’m actually going to be making a down payment/deposit on the A&L Roadhouse in a couple of weeks. It’ll be a Birthday present to myself. Ha
I already own the Godin 5th Ave Kingpin 2…….LOVE IT!!
I have an A&L Roadhouse Parlor Q-Discrete in Denim Blue, its a super guitar. I want to get a Bourbon Burst version Roadhouse because the top wood is cedar vs spruce. Also have a Godin A6 Ultra in Denim Blue, and a Godin 5th Ave CW Kingpin II HB. All awesome guitars. Huge bang for the buck with this family of guitars.
HEY TONY ALWAYS LOVED GODINS GREAT VALUE WELL MADE
QUESTION BRIDGES WITH PEGS OR STRAIGHT THRU DOES IT AFFECT TONE ?
I have 2 Godin guitars. Absolutely amazing craftsmanship, gives Gibson a run for the money. Imo
The first good quality acoustic guitar I owned was a Seagull Mini Jumbo.. A lovely guitar; comfortable to hols and play, great tone and very responsive.
Seagull Maritime Mini Jumbo was my first “good” guitar, and I played it til arthritis in my shoulder made me switch to a dreadnought (the Seagull solid wood SWS Maritime HG, which I still have). My daughter now has the Mini Jumbo, and a Seagull Coastline S6 that we gave her when she was a teenager over 20 years ago. It’s hard to beat Seagulls for quality or price. I now also have a Gibson DSM Songmaker, an Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird, and my camping guitar, a Fender CD280S Nat. The Seagull holds its own with the other all solid wood guitars, and I’ll never get rid of it.
I'm sure this question has been covered in some other Acoustic Life material but I see the fingering of the song strays from the traditional PIMA and even PIMA(e) fingering approaches. Is the fingerstyle approach being used here a known standard approach? And if so what is it called and where can I find out more about it?
Love love love my S6. Sounds way better than the clip Tony shared in this video. Has great low end too.
Is it true that the neck width at the nut is wider than most? I’m looking for a narrower neck at nut (small hands, short fingers, 5’ tall).
I’m going to have to go to my local guitar shop, Alpha Music, and play one of those Seagulls! The sound is amazing!
I used to rock a Seagull but decided to sell it for a Simon Patrick. I have smaller hands and I definitely find the Simon Patrick more comfortable.
My second guitar was a Simon and Patrick all mahogany model in 1990, it was gidt from my sister without my input. It was solid top Mahogany and laminate back sides Mahogany. Some days it sounded and felt great to play, other days it was a dud. The fret ends were sharp and well...I just hated it. I'm sure they've gotten better at them since
I couldn't agree more with you on the s6. I bought one on line and I like it better than anything I've ever had. I just hope Seagull doesn't change for the worse in the coming years.
I had an Art & Lutherie 12 string that was very nice. The only reason I got rid of it is that I had my local luthier build me a custom 12 string.
when my husband took his first Seagull to a singing get together, all the Martin players came over and complimented its fine sound
I have a 2004 Seagull S series Grand/ parlor I bought new. It had a cedar top , wild cherry back and sides , silver leaf maple neck. Satin finish. Bolt on neck design. It still looks and sound great. I did have a 2004 A&L AMI parlor almond it was all laminate 12 fret but sounded great , as good as the cedar top.
O M Gosh, this guys playing one of my favorite classical pieces that I've been learning and I can't believe Ive been playing it ALL WRONG?? NICE SOUNDING GUITAR THOUGH.
I have seagull coastline 12 string and an Americana. Best gigging guitars for the price. Plugged or unplugged they sound great.
My first guitar I actually bought for myself was a Seagull S6 1997 and the second was a Simon&Patrick SP 12-Cedar. And the problem with both is the satin finish that isn’t as protective. Both sound great, especially the SP 12-Cedar.
Wish there were left-handed Seagull Coastlines! (6 strings that is)
Off tangent question: how would someone interpret the back and sides of a guitar being solid select mahogany? Select doesn't negate the 'solidness', does it? Just a different grade of wood (like AA)
I haven't seen you do anything on the Marten D15. It's an amazing guitar! It's very unique and runs great with drop tuning and any other tuning. Try one.
I have Seagulls S6 Coastline a/e. My brother got the Seagulls S6 original and a Godin 5th Avenue. Very nice! Also, the Godins pronounce their name go-day. Quebecois.
I had an Seagull M6 Gloss that I sold... that was a mistake. It was really to excellent play and the sound was very sweet and complex.
I have one of the really early Seagulls and it sounds incredible! The label in the sound hole calls it an "SM". For serial number it is left blank, which seems strange to me. Also, all the lettering is in French first and English second. Does anyone know why the serial number would be left blank?
@@B__Mer yeah, probably
I have a LaPatrie Etude nylon string classic guitar (circa 2008), solid cedar top, mahogany back, sides, and neck, over 2" at the nut, which is good for me at 6'6" big hands, I want to trade in my Data ban on a Seagulls S6 steel string. I added clear film pick guard to both sides of my LaPatrie to prevent scratching thanks to the advice of my guitar teacher at the time.
Estaban spell checked. Just bought a Seagulls S6 from Guitar Center online, came from California well packaged, can't put it down, I play it so much that I will have to superglue back on my caluses like SRV! Great guitar Tone, great recommendations!
I have a Norman B6 from 2001, it sounds and plays like an expensive Martin. Everyone who’s picked it up and played it says it’s one of the best sounding acoustics they’ve played. Cost me about $300 in Montreal as a teenager. When I moved to Austin, the same guitar was selling for $800+. A lot of people in Quebec start on Normans because they’re such a great value, but they end up getting a handmade instrument they can grow with, get better with age and play for life.
How do you identify the notes on sheet music when the capo's on the third fret? - dang it, all the notes are wrong
Just seeing this video 2 years after release, but I have a S&P Woodland Spruce acoustic I've had for 10 years, and it's only sounded better with time, it's by far my favourite guitar I own
I own a Seagull Artist Studio that sounds pretty sweet to my ears.
Review the Godin Metropolis composer. All mohagany concert hall guitar for under $900 cdn. I am hoping that is my Christmas present
Is Tony playing a Tom Sands guitar in this vid?
Yes my satin finish cedar top Art and Lutherie has some pick tracks on it but I still prefer the satin to the gloss finish. Maybe has better sustain . . . I don't know for sure but it looks better too.
Like the head shape of the Seagull guitars that maintain a straight line to the tuner post. That may be the only difference from my A & L drednaught.
Own a Simon & Patrick Songsmith. Wait a minute....l picked a back up as well. Long & McQuade reviewers give it five solid gold stars with 48 reviews. Canadian retailers are having difficulty stocking the whole Godin line up right now.
I love my Gull Spruce top ✌️😎
My niece loves her Seagull S6. Tony, I must be too old. I was thinking of Rocky Nd Bullwinkle.
Seagull S6 1999. I love it.
Godin indeed makes some incredible instruments for the money. I have a Godin Fifth Avenue hollow body electric, which I think is easily comparable tone and quality wise to a Gibson ES 335, but for about half the money.
I have owned a Seagull Coastline for a few yrs now. I played 4 guitars at my local store. Gibson, Martin, Taylor and a Seagul. The first 3 I picked models in the 1000-1800 range. Looks they were very boring .. played ok but not worth it. The Seagul beat them in sound , play ability and looks. Ok so I upped it to the 2k lvl.. they all look good. not great but good.. the sound was equal to the Seagal. I took my son and he asked what was the price.. I told him.. he pointed to the Seagul. No looking back.. I love it.. And yes I'm Canadian :)
The '' Norman'' brand , under the Godin,s Guitar family is not to be forgotten though, they are excellent guitars,
we love Godin. Between us, my husband and I have 4 with one more on order
These are well over $800, but have you ever tried/reviewed Riversong guitars from Canada? Just wondering.
Have an S6 and 12 Concert hall they are fantastic...
May I ask a stupid question. Many years ago I bought a LaPatrie guitar that was made in Quebec, Canada. I never see that name out there in guitars anymore. Have they gone out of business? I like my guitar just fine. But I want to buy a parlor size guitar and I'm not sure where to get one that is well made but doesn't cost a thousand dollars. Do you have any suggestion? I'm an older lady, In my 70's just retired. I want to get back into playing guitar and take lessons. But the larger size guitar is a bit too big for me. Does LaPatrie still make guitars and do they make parlor sized guitars? Ok...thank you.
I've got 3 Seagulls, but none of these. Artist Mosaic (Cedar/Mahogany), Maritime SWS Spruce/Rosewood Dreadnought and an Entourage Folk, essentially same construction as an S6 but parlour sized with sunburst. I'm always happy to play any of them, but the parlour is great for sofa playing and is perfect size for my 11 year old to learn on. I've also got 2 Martins, D28 and D18, and while they are "better" Seagull guitars are fantastic for the money and do indeed punch well above their weight.
Your best video
My favorite are the old Walnut line
I have a Seagull SWS - Mahogany back and sides that was my first slight more $$$ guitar. I replaced it last year with a Martin OM-21. I have not played it much since getting the Martin. If any TAC members are interested just reply. It's an amazing-sounding guitar and punches way above its price point. Probably the best acoustic for the money.
What is your asking price?
@@shepaluteprez I ended up selling it on Reverb a few months ago
i got 2 seagulls 1 S6 natural and 1 12 string and both with qit and its the best sounding guitars i ever had
Would you be able to do a video about the best Canadian guitars under $2000?
My S&P Maple from 1998 is excellent and better than $2k plus Taylors. It is spruce top with solid figured maple back and laminate sides as well as ebony fretboard. It also has a vintage soft V neck.
I have a Seagull parlor sized guitar that I adore
I’m looking for a parlor size. What is yours called? Which model? Thanks
I have a 2008 Norman b18, a 1982 seagull s6 burst and a 1978 seagull natural s6
You think they are good now? The 82 and 78 are all solid wood and sound gorgeous with age
Check out MacKenzie and Marr in Canada for some draw dropping guitars.... I purchased a solid wood 00 size from them that is amazing!!!! .... for $699!!!
Some of the Seagull guitars look really nice, but that headstock is a dealbreaker.
Nice démo i have seagull s6 but the neck was to large because is made for finger picking Player is to large to Play chord if you have small hand now have the Norman b20 New on used market for 450 $ Canadian the regular Price 765$ l like Also Simon Patrick mahogany High end and my best is Norman st68 Rosewood all Solid Wood and LaPatrie classic collection all Solid Wood !
I have to say get a pre 2006 godin or related companies guitar. After that year they started adding epoxy to the neck joint. Makes a neck reset really costly if you can even find a guy to take the job. All in the name of planned obsolescence
My only guitar is the seagull maritime sws
I really love those 5 guitars you should this week.i love them because they do sound great, and there small framed guitars.just stunning instruments all of them.thanks tony hope to see your new artist you always show us.i love all of them dearly.i am working a lot in my store, that I really love a lot.we are doing really well.so that is good news for the store and employees.i am doing what one of my other hobbies are is the love of clothing.we have great sales for everyone.maybe a beautiful gift for your wife and baby for xmas.or your home.thanks tony for your awesome class that I really love so much.hugs and kisses to Whitney and baby Emerson.👍💖🖐️😁🎃💡☕

Well it's about time that we Canucs got a nod. Simon & Patrick Woodland cedar is THE poor man's Martin. Period!
