    Great Video, I love how you explain things, using a liilt humour and lite hartedness with just enough technical info without becoming boaring.
    I made one a few years ago, however mine was slightly different .
    In mine, the park you clamped down for routing IS the space for my circular saw.
    and the part I clamp down for my circular saw is my spacer for my router.
    Meaning i have only 2 parts to use it with both.

    Holy Moly - that’s a great idea!
    Gonna try it as soon as I can. The one thing I struggle with pretty much every project is making simple straight cuts. So much so, I was considering buying a track saw... but I think I’ll try this first.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  3 года назад

      You and me both. I've learned a couple of things, though, that might help. First, if you're using a router, make sure you're cutting in the right direction. Going one way will help keep it close to the straight edge, but going the other way will cause it to want to wander from the straight edge. I can't explain which direction is right, using just words, but try it out both ways and you'll see it right away.
      Second, regarding a circular saw: I could never keep my circular saw straight until I bought a new saw (the Makita cordless). I have several older circular saws, and there's a big difference between them and the new one. I'm not sure what the difference is, but if you have an older circular saw, you might think about getting a new one. I'm really good at spending other people's money. 😄

    Thank you! I have been struggling with cutting a straight line, I have no table saw. Many other designs out there, also simple, but still didn't work for me. I made mine with the saw short-wide side (1 1/2) on one side and the long-wide side (5 1/8) on the other side. This way I can easily flip it if I use one side of the saw or the other.

      Good job! Make sure you're moving the router the correct direction. It's kind of hard to explain which way is correct, but just know that if you move it the correct direction, it's pretty easy to keep the router against the straight edge. But if you move it the wrong direction, the router will want to wander away from the straight edge.

    Wow, there are some great ideas there - thank you. I have this embryonic idea for making this jig adjustable to suit the tool one is using - jigsaw, router, circular saw and perhaps others...I think you can see where I'm going with this. The fiddly bit is getting the flip over part to evenly change in width to suit the tool. Perhaps three (or more) guide holes?

      Easy. Cut another strip or strips to add to the spacer to make it equal to the additional thickness needed and attach with magnets. Since the flip over part is only a spacer, this should work. I would use a forstner bit to drill holes and use small round neodymium magnets. So if the router spacer is 2 1/4 inches and the circular saw is 4 inches, use a 1 3/4 strip that attaches with magnets. If needed, compensate for any gap the magnets may cause. (would be 32nds. or none at all) That's my idea at least.

Lots of RUclipsrs suggest using 3/4” plywood for making these jigs but I have a bunch of table leafs that were left behind when people purchased dining room tables from our vendor mall that seem to be either hardwood such as oak or particle board sandwiched between oak veneer. Will particle board work for building these jigs? I could use oak but it almost seems like overkill. Thanks

    Forget the “measure to the center” or “don’t worry about the blade thickness ” of course it matters. Don’t measure at all. Use the tool itself to determine the width of the filler.
