The block on Jordan is amazing, but from a 90s dunking standpoint, seeing Robinson reject the force of nature that was Shawn Kemp is almost more of a thrill.
Great compilation! I feel like people often forgot how good he was at defense. He's one of those who could rack up a lot of blocks while steal getting steals here and there. Who does that nowadays? Anthony Davis maybe?
He used to be the 5th in steal and 1st in block when he came to the league, that's insane...Thinking of a big man can run for fastbreak, steal and denying the ball, and block shots. In NBA history, very few people can do that.
When David got actual help, he won 2 rings. When people judge his career, they need to realize he spent years with a roster of bench warmers. Only Sean Elliot and Rodman were legit NBA starters, the rest were pine-riders, starting by necessity only, IMHO. He carried a subpar team to the WCF, and lost to a legit championship level team with Dream, Glide, Sam Cassell, Horry, and Mario Ellie. All of which would have been starters in most of he league. He was literally the primary offense, and the primary defense. The Spurs rode David into the ground (hence his back issues), and had to retire early (for a center). He could have gotten another ring or 2, if he stuck around another few years.
That's not why he had back issues. Once they boarded a plane and when the plane took off, the seats fell back and injured both David Robinson and Chuck Person. David missed an entire season because of it. It was tough to watch, they had a bare bones team for at least an entire year. The only good thing about that season was watching an old Dominique Wilkins scoring 20 points a night. David eventually came back but couldn't really play the same afterwards. He started to take a more defensive approach and let Duncan handle more of the offense. They were called the Twin Towers. It's a freak accident off the basketball court that ended his career. --- Also, you can't blame David too much in the playoffs. The coaching staff would call a 5 play, which would spread the team out and allow a pass inside to David. The other team's would double team him and he would have to pass it back out. This meant that the rest of the team was stagnate and doing nothing to help. With better plays and a system, the entire team could have been a lot better in the playoffs. Elliott and Robinson for awhile were 2nd for awhile in high scoring duos in the NBA behind Jordan and Pippin. Yes, they had a weaker team but they had some solid role players for a smaller market team. The year that Hakeem had a monster playoff series was also David having to guard him AND play primary offense on the other side of the court. The Rockets would have a double team of people other than Hakeem to guard David because that was a tough matchup for Hakeem. Talk about a rough job for anyone, especially Mr MVP.
In that wcf matchup Elliott averaged 17, Johnson 16+ (on >50% shooting), and VDN also averaged double digit scoring Robinson's teammates for the most part did show up. On the Rockets side Smith wasn't a factor at all throughout the series, Cassell only had 1 big game, and Drexler wasn't a factor in the 4th quarter of the first 5 games. The C matchup was clearly the deciding factor considering Robinson got outscored by 20 points the last 2 games.
@@kingphil4073 giannis averages like 1 block a year, Robinson averaged 3.2-4.5 blocks per year before badly injuring his back in the late 90s. And even the years with an injured back still averaged 2.5. Robinson also averaged more steals per game than giannis. And Rudy averages like 2 blocks a game and less than a steal a game.
The problem is that in the playoffs David Robinson had under expected performances. His numbers in the regular season were better. But physically he was a monster only Olajuwon could match his strength, speed and agility.
His hands were active all the time. I always wonder if he debut early and didn't get sidelined by his back injury, he could've been 2nd in most blocks and just inside top 10 in steals. His defensive stats definitely took a dive after that injury. Would you agree he's a better defender than say, Garnett or Anthony Davis? Garnett is good at rough-housing you but D.Rob gets "actual" steals and blocks. What do you think?
Wow...that's a tough question...To be honest, I personally do not think how good AD is in defense, ya you can say his help defense is great and he is agile enough to cover the whole block, but his one man defense against big man was shit. KG and Robinson are both phenomenal defender, both won DPOY. I personally think Robinson is a bit easier to be faked by impressive post moves while Garnett did not maintain the ability to defend low post beast like Shaq and TD. KG could defend the whole area up to perimeter while Robinson was more agile and fast. But if I have to choose, I will choose KG to be better defender. Just a slight advantage. What do you think, my bro?
Fair analogy. Though, I still give D.Rob a very slight edge. KG can defend all 5 position but only if they arent elite. Theres a video of him defending MJ and Kobe and they both could score on KG with ease. And you're right, you wouldnt see KG near Shaq at all at defense. He would rather give him an easy 2 in case of switches. DRob could be easier to be faked but to be fair though, it was against elites like Hakeem, Shaq. I don't know man, KG looks better defensively because of his out of this world intensity. But if DRob debut early and didmt get injured, he would be way past what KG achieved defensively.
David Robinson was, without question, a better defender than Kevin Garnett. Robinson, along with Akeem Olajuwon, are the two most talented Centers the league has seen since the mid 80's. If you watch Robinson's first few years in the league, it's ridiculous. He was all over the court. Exceptionally agile and very quick. He continued to be dominant up through 1995, but he lost a great deal of his edge after that. He was already in his 30's by then. Perhaps the playoff losses took a toll on him, mentally. Maybe the public humiliation of his series against the Rockets. The back injury, too. The league made key rule changes from 1999 onward. It's a totally different era for guys like Anthony Davis.
You have to consider that many guys were simply not allowed to defend O'Neal because of his superstar status. He was, more or less, allowed to bulldoze over guys to get his points. The rules went out the window much of the time because O'Neal had high market value. The league has been protecting superstars, veterans, and the home teams for a very long time. This is no secret to anyone who has done the research. On top of this, O'Neal was not a talented shooter. He pretty much had no jump shot and it would have been a great struggle for him to get his points outside of 5-8 feet from the hoop.
Players like Olajuwon and Robinson were legitimately talented players who worked very hard at both ends of the floor. O'Neal never belonged in their company. He had the potential, but learned very early on what he could get away with. Playoff disappointment pushed him to the point of adding more weight and becoming an even lazier player. Getting faked out by Olajuwon is not exactly an insult to the player guarding him. It's par for the course because he faked out everybody. Olajuwon was that good. Robinson was ferocious in his early years. But he kept a cool demeanor. That's just how he was raised. He wasn't gonna open his mouth much or go crazy to prove he was tenacious. He let his play do the talking and it showed in his success & statistics.
@@zhugelianges What, you can't see how unathletic and white Admiral was? I bet if you put him and Jokic on the floor together you couldn't even tell who's who 🤣😂
Robinson with alot worse teams is 32-16 against Hakeem. Olajawan just beat Robinson in playoffs that 1 time. If not for Robert Horry being the nba playoff legend he is, hit a game winner in San Antonio, the series would have at least gone to game 7. And that game would have been in San Antonio. Robinson was also getting doubled and tripled, olajawan wasn't because Houston had many great players.

AD and Giannis in some level. They say Deandre Ayton is the new age David Robinson but he doesn't play the same defense as D.Rob.

THE BEST DEFENDER OF THE 90''s. D-Rob!
For sure top 5 greatest NBA shot blockers of all time.
and probably the top 5 greatest NBA defenders of all time

He's certainly up there with Kareem and also Olajuwan as far as blocking shots. Mark Eaton had an insane single season of over 400 blocks.
