  • In this Wolff Responds, Prof. Wolff comments on Biden's policies and his shift to the left. Wolff argues that Biden is simply softening and slowing the effects of a declining US economy, but shows no signs of wanting to stop or reverse it. Biden's tactics are no where near as aggressive as those employed by FDR.

Biden's sudden progressive bent appears so impressive because America starts from such a low level. So he will get lots of unwarranted accolades for very little real effort.

The professor states an argument I have been using to rebut the position of capitalists. Put this way; You defend tax cuts to the rich through which they then leverage by buying treasury securities issued to cover their very debt they did not pay. As a result, you are paying them interest on the very debt they didn't pay. So you are good with that?!
And this is only one way they are benefiting on the backs of the average wage earner through a highly gerrymandered tax system.

Don't you think having an "actual healthcare system" first...might be more prudent?
Medical error is officially the third leading cause of death and that was before covid...
and that doesn't include the number of "bad outcomes".
If the argument is that 46,000 die from lack of access to THIS healthcare system...how
does one respond to the fact that 300,000 die because they HAVE access?
And this is NOT the actual number, since medical error has been the leading cause of
death since the late 90's... but actually having it "listed" as "the cause of death"...is
as disingenuous as the distinction with those who died "of covid" rather than "with covid"...
Also the entire "healthcare complex" has had since the 60's to adapt to medicare and
Medicaid...while "private health insurance" only accounts for roughly 1/5 of total healthcare
costs...and whose profit margin just hit 3% of the total revenue in 2018...so it's elimination
would result in a reduction of the per capita costs of over %10,000 per...by $179.
This does not mean it should NOT be eliminated...but it is not a solution of any kind
to the actual PROBLEM that is "healthcare" in the US.

For all intents and purposes they are printing the money - the M2 money supply has exploded in the past year...if anything we will have inflation or possibly hyperinflation as 20% of all US dollars have been created in 2020.

No need to “pay for” it with taxes. The 1.9 T bill passed without any discussion of new taxes and is thus a huge net injection of money to the economy. Government deficit spending equals private surplus. If you tax back all the new spending then there is no net benefit to the economy. You may be shifting $ from rich to poorer (and probably a greater propensity to spend/consume) but there’s no net addition to the money supply. Go big and keep spending until we see real sustained inflation. See Stephanie kelton “The Deficit Myth”

A massive crisis lies ahead when the moratorium on evictions ends. Biden's honeymoon will end. The Second Great Depression will not end when COVID ends. This together with the border crisis plus identity politics plus unemployment plus anger over censorship could open the door for a GOP resurgence, which I do not want.

I have appreciated your economic commentary on RUclips and learned a lot about socialism as a realistic, virtuous alternative to our dumb capitalist economic system. A+++. Not such a good grade for you on your grasp of politics, i.e. how our government, in particular, the federal legislative and executive branches, the government we actually have, works in the real world. The old saying that "politics is the art of the possible" is true. You love to lead the attack on the "Democratic establishment" as being sold out and not really supportive of progressive ideas. I will allow young Millennials the privilege of frustration with their stodgy old government that does not understand the brilliant things that they, the young, have figured out that their elders just don't understand. You (and I) are too old to be given such a pass.
Faulting Biden for not moving as boldly in 2021 as FDR and the Democrats in Congress in 1933 is nuts. FDR in 1933 had a 311-117* House majority 60-35 Senate majority under the old filibuster rules that did not give the minority party an easy path to block legislation with majority support today. He also had a population that had gone through the harsh results of conservative economic folly that led to the Depression, that had no answers for how to end it, and that offered people on their economic backs virtually no financial relief from their government. While FDR had detractors and opponents, the people overwhelmingly were looking to him to lead them out of misery and were open to new ideas.
Even with a pandemic crippling the economy, it had settled in only about seven months before the 2020 election and, largely due to social programs adopted over the decades by Democratic majorities over Republican intransigence, the people's economic pain was not nearly so broad and deep as it was at the time of the 1932 election. Biden governs over a much more starkly divided population, with a decent majority of popular support, but with a huge minority in the cultish thrall of the autocratic former president unwilling to accept that Biden won the election legitimately. In fact, due to U.S. population distribution and structural flaws in the apportionment of the Senate and the Electoral College, Biden could have lost the 2020 election (as Hillary Clinton actually did) with a shift of only about 55,000 votes in favor of Trump in three states.
Sure, the Democrats are not free from lobbying and campaign support by monied capitalist interests, but that has not stopped them from adopting the American Rescue Plan bill under narrow reconciliation rules that create an exception to the Senate filibuster rule. They will continue to enact bold progressive legislation that Biden will enthusiastically sign into law IF THEY CAN. The obstacle is that Biden has only a 218-212** Democratic majority in the House and a fragile 50-50+1 tiebreaker edge in the Senate, with its modern filibuster rules and at least two Democratic Senators who will not commit publicly that they might vote with the other 48 to repeal or modify the filibuster rule if push comes to shove. Whether Biden and the Democrats can do more remains to be seen. Again, though, the notion that progress is stalled because establishment Democrats are sufficiently committed to progressive ideas is ridiculous. The challenge is what the Democrats can pass over Republican resistance by the barest of majorities in both houses of a bicameral legislative branch and political reality for Democrats "on the bubble" in terms of their constituent support necessary to protect their seats into the future.
Vilify capitalism, but not the Democrats who, on the whole, are doing their dead-level best to move the country toward a far more progressive economic system in an unfortunately flawed political system.

I was never good at Maths so can people tell me if I have this right. As numbers get bigger the ability to achieve growth requires a larger number to achieve the same percentage of growth. If you want to increase 1 to 2 it is only an increase of 1 but in percentage terms it is an increase of 100%. If you start at 1,000,000 then to increase by 100% you need to produce 1,000,000. Much more effort is needed to achieve the same change. Mathematics is really just another language.
Perception of those numbers can be used or abused through Rhetoric.
Therefore does it mean that the economy is flying along very quickly but it is the numbers that are the problem. Is it our measuring system, of Society, that is the problem? Is this the reason why the human race will destroy the planet because its measuring systems are out of touch with nature? Mathematics can mimic nature but not explain it.
My own lifestyle has given me the knowledge to know that less is more. A tent, A car, decent food, the occasional drug to broaden my understanding or outlook (most of the time that it is alcohol and singing my favourite songs in the middle of nowhere) and a world to explore and understand. What more could a person want.
Therefore is Finance the problem? Is the average human being being sold a dud. Finance makes people feel inadequate due to the ever increasing work that needs to done to achieve a perceived improvement based on percentage.
Although I have been following Crypto since 2008 I never invested in Bitcoin because I had this feeling deep inside that a money problem could not be solved with another money. Same as a debt crisis was not solved with debt. Am I crazy or is it that the Human species is faulty? If I am the crazy one then so be it. I would not change it. Life is good.
