Once his bullshit finally reached new highs he received a large amount of backlash, which is what this was.

    • @zc630
      @zc630 8 дней назад +163

      @@davidman001 he's popular because he's the only anime reviewer that seems to dislike stereotypical "anime-ness", like I and others do. Too many people let dramatic characters with the intelligence of slugs, kindergarten play tier voice acting, and "character development" that makes The Very Hungry Caterpillar look like a Dostoevsky novel slide just because it's endemic to the industry. I liked PMMM, but it's a fact that the story only works because not a single character asks any of the obvious questions before it's way too late. Using a character's dumbassery as a plot device only really works in comedies.
      In short, he's the opposite of your standard "aura moments" reviewer and that makes him my favorite. He looks at anime as a medium and not a genre.

    Just for the record, on the topic of what people watch Scamboli for, I really do come for unique, thought provoking analysis and overlooked gems. This channel introduced me to Heavenly Delusion, Land of the Lustrous, and Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. They were all shows I wouldn't have given a chance if not for them having been highlighted in one of these videos.
    This channel *also* is what got me to give Dandandan a chance, despite 95% of the humor in the show (though it was recommended when it was still just a manga) not being *for* me, and thanks to it I got to witness something incredible along the way.

      This is a magical girl FANTASY show from 2011. Back then the focus was animation, design and plot. That's what makes shows like this good, and the sequel even better. Now we're in 2025 where we expect anime to mimic reality in America. You're not going to enjoy a show if you're constantly focused on judging the logical soundness every single decision the characters make, which weren't even that bad to begin with. Unfortunately people nowadays rate shows based off of this. The magical girls don't question Kyubey's motives or his contracts cause making a contract with a 'magical being' is a typical trope for this genre. The focus is NOT supposed to be on the real world. The decision Madoka's mom made to trust her to let go during the storm isn't reflective of what a typical mother would do. But it really isn't that deep. We already even saw from the beginning that she was portrayed as a young and somewhat frivolous woman so it's not even that surprising. The focus is and will always be the magic. I will be THOROUGHLY enjoying the upcoming movie.

But then the show just writes itself so that they're correct. It would have made such a good satire heist show.

      @keiichitw 8 дней назад +47

      Honestly, I don’t think you’re getting the issue here. In this scene, the mother has no idea what her daughter has been up to or the whole Magical Girl/apocalypse situation. She thinks her kid is just a normal 14-year-old. What kind of parent realistically lets their child run into a tornado because they say, “Trust me”? It’s unconvincing and pulls you out of the immersion because her reaction makes no sense for her character.
      And no, you can’t compare this to characters like Luffy, Gon, or Tanjiro. Those are Shonen protagonists in worlds where danger is normal, and their guardians often know the risks. Madoka’s mom lives in a realistic modern setting, and her reaction doesn’t fit.
      Madoka Magica emphasizes emotional depth and realism in relationships, so when a scene like this happens, it breaks the immersion. In Shonen anime, these decisions work because the worlds are less grounded. Here, it just feels like lazy writing to push the plot forward. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the anime is bad. But if we’re going to talk about what good writing looks like in this kind of situation, considering the context and setting, this just falls short

We cannot as a community deflect criticisms like this simply because his videos are "for entertainment". Scamboli is an incredibly huge anituber and his voice does influence the opinions of others. not here to call you a slur and others can correct me if i'm wrong, but i always assumed that (from a meta perspective) the large appeal of madoka magica comes from the audience carrying with them, the understandings and assumptions of the tropes of magical girl shows. the characters are dumb because the show is trying to point out that this is how the characters from sailor moon/ pretty cure/ cardcaptor sakura would act in this situation. kyuubey asks for a contract because that's what happens in all magical girl shows. i figured a lot of people liked the show because they watched sailor moon as a kid and seeing a dark inversion of the genre was something new for them. for anyone who isn't familiar with the genre it'd be kinda like playing doki doki literature club without knowing anything about dating sims, or playing undertale without knowing anything about rpg tropes, they're still decent experiences on their own, but they lose a lot of their impact. obviously i don't know how much scam knows about the magical girl genre and to be honest i'm not all that invested in this discourse, but i'm surprised you got such a vitriolic response from people for your take. literally nobody talks about madoka anymore, it's so irrelevant to modern anime discussion, it almost never comes up on anybody's top ten lists. people probably just shat on you because there are a million videos from 2012 saying "this is the greatest deconstruction of all time" and they watched those videos and feel like they're smart because of it

    • @Arekkumm
      @Arekkumm 8 дней назад +36

      Yea, the show is a deconstruction of magical girl shows and a lot of the issues with the show he points out in this video - not all of them - can be chalked up to adhering to the dumb tropes and themes of said shows.
      However, shows still need to stand on their own. I gave madoka an 8, and I think I still stand by that score. But if you take away the context of it being a deconstruction, I could see it being rated lower. 4 might be a bit much tho lol

    • @135791max
      @135791max 8 дней назад +27

      I completely agree, him watching the show without the understanding of the tropes kind of changes the entire impact of the show, he guessed that the magical cat granting a contract was evil, but that's similar to what was done in every magical girl show before it, and no one ever batted an eye about it or asked any questions ever. Does take away from my enjoyment or how funny scambolis vids were? No. Though I still do wish he could be a bit more objective about understanding the fact that the entire magical girl trope was baisically a plot device.

      It's especially true for shows that spoke to people on a deeper level, whether because it's a genuinely good show, they watched it at the right point in their life or that there was a character or situation that they strongly related to.
      For a personal example here's three shows I rate really highly: girlfriend, girlfriend; vivy -fluorite eye's song-; and your name.
      Girlfriend, Girlfriend is absolute trash as a show but I really enjoyed it and I wouldn't care in the slightest if someone criticised it. In fact, if I was talking about it and why I liked it I'd probably throw criticisms of it's stupidity as reasons for why it's good actually.
      Vivy was a show that I think was just genuinely great. I'd probably get a bit annoyed if people were to nitpick it over time travel or whatever. However I'd still be fine with substantive criticisms or opinions like "it's just not for me".
      Your Name on the other hand was one of those shows that I saw at the right point in my life. I was the same age as the characters and I think it was the first romance I actually watched willingly. While I know there's a lot of (valid) criticisms of it when I hear them it always sort of feels like someone saying Santa isn't real.
      Anyway I feel like that's why a lot of people get super defensive over Madoka and Eva. Both have a bunch of characters that people can relate to especially as teenagers and are likely the first 'philosophical' or drama heavy show that that person watched.

    There's a weird thing I been thinking about lately, and that's how media treats the viewer. Like, there's some shows that will feed you spoonfuls of how things work in the world you're watching and why a character is doing this and that. Saw family watching an episode of Mashle and how you're suddenly given the backstory of the red haired guy, then when he becomes cool the person that guy is fighting says "OH, THAT MARK I KNOW IT! THAT'S THE MARK OF PEOPLE WHO ARE BORN WITH MESSED UP MAGIC!" And I'm like, "Man, wasn't there a better way to tell us that information?" But then there's the opposite of that problem, you're given something like Eva or Madoka and the characters don't even bother to question anything and are just pushed around like ragdolls into playing part the epic secret story going on in the background that you won't get told until the end of it. So I'm stuck thinking what even is the right way to tell a story if you could end up feeding the viewer too much info it becomes stupid, or doing none of it but now the protagonists are stupid because of it. And I like all these shows, I like Mashle's absurd humor, I like Madoka's and Evangelion's art and themes they're getting into because people wouldn't dare to go in that direction before like "What if the magical girl's animal partner was plotting something TWISTED" for example.
    I watched years of anime, and I'm still keeping up with some of the seasonal stuff. Yet, I haven't figure out the true reason why there's animes I vibe with and others I just stop watching completely. Like, Bleach is a shonen that tells its story in similar way to others I have watched before like Naruto and Dragon ball but I grew to despise it over time since I the viewer felt insulted since things were going in a direction that weren't of my liking. Like why anyone but Ichigo is winning fights and their friends get beaten up so Ichigo can come in and save them? Why is Chad always losing? Or why whenever Ichigo is losing someone or something saves him and he has to spend like ten episodes training? Change this up with Dragon ball, change Ichigo with Goku, or maybe change this argument with Naruto and it's the same crap. Why did I still watched Dragon ball z and Naruto over Bleach? And to be fair, I was later told a lot of the characters were simplified and that they're far better in the manga. And I'm willing to read it at some point. But I feel confused as to why I felt that when similar shows do the same, hell, the only other anime I dropped because of the same issues was Fire Force and I heard stuff gets crazy in the manga that makes me wanna give it a second chance just that reading it instead.
    And when it comes to "deep shows" like Attack on Titan, I can barely take its seriousness when I turn on the critic mind since something in the story has taken away all that immersion. And when that mentally gets turns on, it's hard not to start seeing all the flags in something and then my enjoyment of it decreases. My sister and I went through that moment during one of the many seasons of Boku no hero when the bazillion training arcs we just watched something that happened triggered that critic mind and we started to watch it not for any enjoyment, but to make fun of it and how bad it was getting. We had a different response to Onima together, my mind was like "This is an interesting commentary about one's gender and how we people suffer different problems when we're born, also, someone in the animation team stood awake a whole week to animate the pink girl's bikini scene kudos on them" while she was "NO, THIS SUCKS BECAUSE I HATE THAT THE BROTHER WAS OLDER AND NOW HE GOES IN WITH ALL THE OTHER YOUNGER GIRLS HE'S THIS AND THAT!". Viewing of media is interesting, and hearing what others think is pretty fun. Like, I never stopped myself when watching Madoka to think "Why didn't Madoka asked Kyubey anything before basically writing a contract with the devil?" Instead, when the other movie came out where Homura wins I was like "WHY DID HOMURA DID THIS, WHY DID SHE DISRESPECT MADOKA'S WISH? THIS SUCKS!"
    Why did my critical opinion trigger there and not on the original? Why did I spent years hating the Homura movie without ever questioning why Madoka let herself be deceived so easily? Then, when I watched a video about the themes of the Homura focus movie I was like "This is so cool what the hell? Madoka has references to this old media and Homura always being the bad guy makes sense now?" I grown to take things into consideration, to listen to other people's ways of viewing media. And understanding why they would love it when I hated it, but when I'm on the other side of the coin and that someone says they hate something I like? They just say buzzword after buzzword and there's literally no argument to be done or anything to be heard since they're speaking in tongues with "THIS IS COOMER BAIT! IT'S SLOP!" and at that point there's no reason to listen any further since a mature person wouldn't hold a conversation full of that type of words. I use them ironically since they're literally garbage words, they're funny because there's no inherit worth to them and don't deserve to be taken seriously. Calling something slop it's funny because we know someone spent months working on that one isekai, animating every frame of it even when the animation isn't the best looking one. I have given a few isekais a try, and some I just stay because they're cozy to watch or I can actually vibe with the story. I like to open myself to things more and more, even when I have zero interest at first. Like how everyone was playing Balatro and I just did not care about poker at all, now after playing it myself I actually wanna try playing inside a casino for the experience of it and because I learned how to do poker hands.
    I see why they go with the whole "bad faith" argument, a lot of youtubers do these thumbnails to trigger the people specifically to click and watch through. Which, finding a good thumbnail that makes people click it's pretty hard on itself. And a lot of the time other youtubers do get up their 🍑 and the video starts to feel pretty insulting. It's been a while since I watched you and my first reaction to the first sections was "Man, he thinks he's Stanley Parable", until seeing all the terrible comments you were getting about literally saying you didn't like Madoka and understanding why you would treat people who DID NOT BOTHER to argue with you at all and instead attack YOU and not attacking your arguments. Life's pretty damn weird, a lot of people don't stop for a second to see what they just wrote and realize "Wait, why am I getting mad? This guy's just another reviewer of the bunch, why do I let them take the beauty of something I enjoy? Why let some reviewer tell me how to feel? I should just enjoy my favorite show again and forget I saw that" I see words on a screen, hear voices in the speaker, words that are just....words. They don't mean much unless I'm the one who gives them meaning, if I wanna get mad at what someone said I could and just point out the parts got wrong or I could just continue with my day. Nowadays, people will just say anything in order to spark conflict. Like using a worm to hook in a fish with something completely meaningless like "THIS CHARACTER IS BAD AND IF YOU LIKE THEM YOU'RE BAD TOO!". Okay stranger on the internet, have a good day! But people take the bait, and that post gets dozens of interactions and people start wasting their days fighting words in the internet. We're encouraging whatever the hell this is, fights over cartoons that end up being fights against people and not about the arguments themselves.
    Thank you for this wonderful video, it really gives a lot to think about crtiques themselves and the viewers and how we the spectators view media as a whole.

      HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THIS IDEA my word!
      🤖
      It is with no small degree of existential disquiet that I must interrogate the epistemological underpinnings of this textual emanation. The concatenation of words herein displayed appears, at first blush, to gesture towards a telos of communicative clarity, yet upon deeper scrutiny, one is inexorably ensnared in a hermeneutic labyrinth, the likes of which evoke the aporetic meanderings of Zeno's paradox.
      Indeed, the dialectical structure-or lack thereof-oscillates perilously between Derridean différance and an almost Platonic yearning for an ideal form that, alas, remains perpetually deferred. Is this not, in itself, a simulacrum of discourse, a hyperreal manifestation of semiotic entropy wherein signifiers cavort unmoored from their referents, as though to mock the very notion of semantic fidelity?
      Moreover, one cannot overlook the conspicuous absence of ontological grounding, a lacuna so vast as to rival the void contemplated by Nietzsche's abyss. The post presumes, without justification, a metaphysical framework wherein its own predicates may operate unchallenged-an audacious gambit that invites skepticism from even the most charitable interlocutors.
      What are we to make of this? Is it an exercise in performative obfuscation, a Sisyphean endeavor to convey the inexpressible through the inadequate medium of language? Or is it merely an ontic placeholder, an artifact whose sole function is to exist, thereby fulfilling its own tautological imperative?
      In the final analysis, one is left with a veritable palimpsest of ideas, each overwriting the last in a futile quest for coherence. And yet, even as we stand on the precipice of understanding, the abyss stares back, leaving us to ponder whether this post is not, in fact, the very embodiment of Baudrillard's hyperreality: a simulacrum so convincing that it deceives even itself.

Scamboli definitely needed to pay attention when watching his review of madoka magica in order to properly analyse his review. It's like he doesn't even understand Scamboli Reviews and needs to really watch the rest of the channel in order to get context for this particular review.

    I hate how for some reason some people online are no longer willing to just have a proper discussion about a topic that they both like, it has to be an argument and one thing always needs to be better than this other persons thing, it just makes it so people no longer want to have open discussions with people.

      Its become a part of our identity, so is every other piece of media we consume. There seems to be a very fine line that makes it harder and harder to distinguish between a critique against the aforementioned media piece, and a critique against one's opinion. Thus, it can get pretty heated very quickly, as you say.
      Personally, I find madoka magika an absolute dogwater of a series, although i still like it very much. So-bad-its-good paradox, that sort of thing. I recognize the bad aspects and I very much agree on what he says for the most part, and it's not a hill im willing to die on trying to defend with what little merit the show has for itself.

    I agree that a lot of the criticisms of your critiques seem like they aren't very well reasoned (though sometimes I think people are just exaggerating their outrage in an attempt to be funny)
    honestly, it made me want to try and work through why I actually liked Madoka Magica when I watched it... in a way that isn't just backlash for someone else's negative opinion of the work.
    I think something that kind of made Madoka Magica make sense for me, was to think of it in terms of the magical girl genre in general.
    in most of these types of shows, the process of the girls getting their magic, and accepting the premise that they must fight, is kind of fast tracked because the show has other priorities. this fast tracking is absolutely a contrivance... the fun part of the show is supposed to be the part where they already have their magic, and use it in interesting ways that are cool to look at. likewise, their home life is there to make the characters relatable to the show's target demographic, but then the show has to find ways to hand wave how these schoolkids are capable of hiding any of this from their families.
    in a normal magical girl show, all of this services a benign purpose... the target demographic are kids, but they already get treated like kids in real life, and they don't want to see the characters get treated like kids in their escapist adventure media, even while they do want to relate to the characters and see them go through age appropriate problems. but Madoka Magica's world in general always feels just a little bit tonally off. even the regular environments that the characters inhabit don't seem quite right... it's all very cute, but things often feel a little too empty, a little too vast, a little too ostentatious... for me, it felt like everything was stage dressing, or sometimes the setting operated on dream logic, even in the parts of the story that were supposed to depict the girls' normal everyday lives. and I feel like that off kilter vibe is actually very cohesive, and might be one of the work's biggest accomplishments.
    we, as the audience, are picking up on the ominous signs... but within the story, the girls are kind of letting the contrivance have its way. you want to be a magical girl, don't you? wouldn't it be nice to think you were that special, and important? and even once something horrible happens... a truly noble person would sacrifice themselves for a worthy cause, wouldn't they?
    I love that Sayaka's magical girl outfit comes with a cape, and she uses a sword, like a knight. her attitude is pure chivalry. she wants to protect the world from monsters, even if it means subjecting herself to constant fighting. and not the cool kind... just struggle. she'll do it so that Madoka doesn't have to. Sayaka is the tough one, isn't she? and especially if she can use her wish to heal someone she cares about... that'd be worth it, even if he doesn't choose her, right? Sayaka is choosing this path for admirable reasons. selflessly sacrificing everything for the good of others, the way stories of heroes always say you should.
    it feels like Sayaka rushes in without asking for more details because she doesn't want to have the chance to chicken out. and then, once she's made her decision, she doesn't want to be given new reasons to regret it. it's too late for her to reconsider. it's the genre, isn't it? you're supposed to want to be a hero. who else will save the world, if you won't?
    but for Sayaka, it was always a bid for attention and admiration... something that she wasn't guaranteed to gain for herself by doing this, but something that she hoped for anyway. and that selfishness kind of breaks the heroic image, doesn't it? you're supposed to be determined, and capable of struggling, with no reward. it's stoicism... which is something you don't often see explored as it exists in girls. normal stoic imagery is all about grizzled men who won't talk about their feelings. but it does look kind of silly when it's teenage girls who didn't ask enough questions before entering into a contract that won't let them look back.
    and I think the implications that come out of using Sayaka as an exemplary case study are pretty interesting. Madoka actually doesn't decide to become a magical girl at the same time as Sayaka, specifically because she is considering the gravity of making that choice. the types of reservations she voices may seem silly, because she's more worried about not having a good enough wish... and she doesn't ask a lot of questions either, but that's because she's shy, and she tends to follow others' lead, and it is a genuine character weakness. it's something she's insecure about... she doesn't have many assertive qualities to her own name. and still, other magical girls seem to have taken the gravity of this decision into consideration, and made the choice anyway. what must they have wished for, which was so important that they'd sacrifice everything? would it matter if they'd known everything that Kyuubei was hiding from them? or would they still do it, for the sake of what they really wanted?
    Madoka waits long enough to know why she shouldn't, and still finds a reason to choose it.
    and that stoicism is still at the center of it all. Madoka and Homura are locked into this horrible inverse relationship, where one is always sacrificing herself for the sake of the other, even though neither will truly be happy if the other has to suffer. it mirrors the way magical girls are convinced to make their contracts. they're told that the world, and people's safety, is threatened by the presence of evil and dangerous witches. they all make their contracts, in some part, for the sake of the public's protection. it's self sacrificial, even before you learn that all magical girls are destined to eventually become witches themselves. Kyuubei never hides the fact that it's a constant chore, it's dangerous and scary, and it's a huge responsibility... that's actually part of how he pressures them.
    the irony of what a girl becomes when she tosses away her prior peace and becomes a public servant, subjected to this arduous and constant litany of chores that wears her down until it breaks her, is actually a great way to conceptualize how self sacrificial stoicism will eventually turn you into someone that the people you care for don't really know.
    by the time Madoka resolves to leave her family, and go forge her contract, she actually does know the relevant information. and her family knows nothing. her mom suspects she's been struggling, but it feels like there isn't a way to break into whatever this is. the only thing she can think to do for her daughter when she confronts her is to slap her. it's unconvincing. and it's at this point when you see how little Madoka can relate to her mother anymore.
    we don't really know the contents of their relationship from before the story began, but from their behavior, we can tell that Madoka and her mother were close. a huge part of what we've watched over the course of this story, is Madoka and her mother drifting apart. the information that Madoka knows has become vastly different than what her mother is aware of. and it's changed Madoka into someone that her mother doesn't recognize. she's bearing the weight of it on her own... it'd be so much easier if the secrets were the simple type that normal teenagers keep. but when Madoka leaves, and her mother lets her go... that's helplessness.
    honestly, it points to the idea that Madoka's mom might be a bit too stoic as well. she's always been a career woman, an achiever, someone who goes above and beyond, balancing work and home life, sometimes in ways that leave her home life on the back burner. what goes on in her work life? it's nothing her family needs to worry themselves over. this might be where Madoka learned that self reliant people don't let their burdens weigh on the ones they're protecting. if you're really going to step up and do something for them, you should be striving to take care of it on your own. and it seems like exploiting this isolation is by design. Kyuubei operates startlingly like an abuser in that sense.
    I'm not saying this has to hit right, or seem compelling just for being what it is... I just think that in the world of Madoka Magica, it feels like the rules that would streamline a plot for the sake of fun adventures in a normal magical girl show are being used for something else here.

      @@wq7170 thank you! honestly, I don't expect that explanation to 100% placate someone who still thinks it's stupid for Madoka's mom to have let her go at that point... but I do think the parallels are interesting. I think I might just be the type who's a little more willing to meet the work where it wants to be, which isn't really better or worse than coming at it with a greater expectation toward realism.

    What makes a good reviewer is consistency, not if they like what you like. Scamboli is a good reviewer because I know what kind of anime he likes, so I can gauge if I'll like an anime based off of how he reacts to it. If you're freaking out that he doesn't like an anime, you need to reevaluate your priorities.
