Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano
Frederic Chopin
24 Préludes, Op. 28
No. 24 in D minor
Directed by Christopher Nupen
I don’t understand why some people in the comments here are complaining about his tempo and left hand being “labored.” The piece is marked *“Allegro appassionato,”* not “Presto con fuoco.”
Idem !
I agree with your opinion.
Ashkenazy recorded the preludes twice. He wasn’t happy with the preludes from his Chopin set. His second recording of this prelude is the best left hand on recording. I don’t care how many dozens of professionals you listen to, you won’t find one better. It’s under this RUclips id, JJwrEaP3QEs He also creates a cascade effect with the big descending run of chromatic thirds while keeping perfectly in time with the left hand. Shows why he is the best pianist of all time.
The set of 24 Preludes as a whole covers the entire range of human emotions - from joyful and full of hope, to melancholic, to romantic, to utter heartbreak and tragedy, to strength and absolute defiance in the face of imminent death (Prelude #24 is the ultimate example of this in my opinion) in which Chopin seems to tell death that it may soon take his body from this Earth... but it will never take his passion, his heart, his soul or his inner strength. This is him raging against the dying of the light with his head held high. Thank you Chopin, for sharing your most vulnerable heart with us.
that's a great interpretation, thank you
U commented this on the Chopin tournament video too
0:10 Robert de Niro really takes method acting to another level.
What is underappreciated here is how much he is leaping rather than just rotating and nailing every LH thumb note. This is more difficult to achieve and puts the piece at a higher difficulty. Maybe he is rotating, but still he is jumping and doesn’t miss anything - kind of amazing. He captures the fury of the piece wonderfully. The comments about amateurism are missing the mark. Everyone needs to show they know something I guess.
I have heard so many many recordings but none if them has reached this level it’s the greatest one
I first became aware of this lovely Chopin prelude watching "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1945) with Hurd Hatfield (as Dorian) "playing" this piece on the pianoforte when romancing Angela Lansbury ( playing Ethel Vane).
I first became aware of a Requiem when watching "The Chronicles of the Bampoosa", which is an extensive documentary (1954) on the intricacies of the overlord DAC.
Cessiants
Sybil Vane. And yes it’s a wonderful moment in that film.
It sounds surprisingly laboured given that its Ashkenazy.
There's so much that Ashkenazy can play fantastically. His interpretation of Prokofiev's 2nd piano concerto is otherworldly....I don't know why he chose to perform Prelude 24 when he must have known he'd struggle greatly with it.
Diplamatik Juan he gets to make that decision tho...and each interpretation done by any pianist or mysician has its own reason to be so.... i respect the sound...
Shengchang Jin Of course every interpretation is individual, and of course he gets to make the decision. I was questioning why he made the decision to pick that piece. He is clearly struggling with it. I've read some interviews with him and he's very candid about the fact that in general there are some passages which he struggles with that other pianists can play easily. performance and Interpretation-wise, Ashkenazy is one of my favorite pianists.
Diplamatik Juan oh yeah i totally understand what you mean but looking at the performer's view I'd assume at the - believe it was a some sort of encore piece- moment he had his own reason to choose this piece either had to or just happened to pick this...
DAC 3.1.1 Rahul wins
@@Someonece I dont think he is struggling with the left hand. He deliberately plays it with articulation to produce his own sonority.. It is a difficult piece but not something that technically challenges Ashkenazi.
Chopin to najpiękniejsza spuścizna dla ludzkości.
there is no better perfomance of this prelude than this. Oh mir Ashkenazy, you are actually glorious !!!
mayito jl seong Jin cho is the best in my opinion. Very expressive playing but he also plays it at ease at the same time
best interpretation on YT by far
Vladimir Ashkenazy. you killed it. greatness!
Hi (again)! Find the whole recital with Chopin's 24 preludes on mediciTV website!
This piece is infamous because of its almost invincible polyrythmic demands but Ashkenazy has it conquered, far better than other.
Ah...my favorite pianist. :) He plays with expression that speaks to me.
Thank you for posting this -- it brings back so many wonderful memories. I first heard one of his Chopin recordings on the radio c. 1969, and can remember where I was when it happened; that's how magical the moment was. I used to go to all his performances in the NY/NJ area 40+ years ago, and, when given the choice, still listen to no one else. Ashkenazy is a great artist!

Великий пианист. Великое произведение.
Amazing performance ❤
A virtuoso pianist. Great to hear after dinner and to float in a good relaxation.
Great personality! Who cares if he plays it under speed. His sound and his demeanour are absolutely divine!
Did you realise that you can find the whole recital with Chopin's 24 preludes on mediciTV website? See in infos below the video!
Una,maravilla. Gracias
Why is Robert De Niro playing so well?
LOL :)
He really look here like De Niro :D
Superb playing.
So wonderful!! Thank you!!
I adore him!!!!
I love Vladimir but this tempo isn't doing it for me.
Lol idiot
@@rahulsangal5438 u idiot. it is his opinion
Pay attention to his left hand, I've never heard such a deep sound on this piece before, it's amazing.
Ashkenazy, incomparably brilliant!
Ashkenazy and Harasiewicz the only two pianists in my opinion that gets the tempo and sensitivity if Chopin’s Preludes and Nocturnes correct, playing them with heart and soul unmatched! 💔
Sublime player!!!!
Wow!
Amazing!!!!!!
the best version
Ashkenazy recorded the preludes twice. His second set from 1994 is 'much' better than his first. It's on a cd with the third sonata that's available on Amazon. His prelude 24 in D Minor from his 1994 set is quite possibly the best on recording, and much better than what you hear here. He even creates a cascade effect on the big run with the chromatic thirds. Number 16 is perhaps the best ever on that set, too, for that matter. His finger work is just plain superior.
Yo mama so fat every time she breathes, she creates a Cascade effect
amazing!!
Brilliant!
Bravo!
Bar 72 - sounds like 5, 4 instead of 5,5 if you know what I mean. Just an observation, I do and have enjoyed Askenazy’s playing over the years
supposed to be 6,4 as in the score
Perhaps he chose something he would struggle to do justice to. All the more respect for that
Grazie. Ciao :-)
Not one of the better renditions that I have heard - lacks especially the necessary dynamic control of forte-piano such as is characteristic of Chopin.
Out of sync is a feature of youtube lately
The Storm
This is quite hard even for Ashkenazy, right?
Only Askenazy can cast this “storm”
The fantastic of Ashkenazy & Glenn Gould, them really sounds diffrent all the rest of pianists

The Scent of Green Papaya
Il y a quand même une grande différence avec ce qu'on entend la plupart du temps chez les candidats ou jeunes lauréats des concours. Eux récitent un texte avec une virtuosité souvent éblouissante. Lui nous raconte une histoire en utilisant un piano.
I think he was suffering from arthritis.
It seems that he's struggling with this one. And, unfortunately, it sounds quite amateurish and sluggish. Even the forced rage and gravitas he brings to the piece doesn't make up for it. Chopin is very cruel to write such a difficult LH accompaniment here. Just goes to show, even the 'greats' find this stuff hard.
brasseye84 Sorry, can you appoint me one interpratetion of this peace that sound like not amateurish? It sounds so clean for me, especially his left hand, at least it sounds cleaner than other performers I've ever heard, except Pollini!!!, of course im an amateur myself....
It's clean as far as he manages to play all the correct notes, but it lacks any fluidity/elegance. The LH sounds very laboured. For that reason, I think it sounds like he is technically struggling with the piece. Check out Dang Thai Son, Maria Joao Pires, Martha Argerich, Ivo Pogorelich, to name but a few.
+brasseye84 I just listened to Martha's and you're right, her LH is so elegant and smooth, and her trills are so fluid compared to Vlad's.
You're right, Pogorelich's version is much better for exemple
It wouldn't surprise me if this was a case of him revisiting the score while commuting to the concert venue or something like that as I have absolutely no doubt that he would handle this Prelude with considerable ease, and considering his vast repertoire which includes a significant number of works that pose much more of a technical challenge
Como olvidar cuando Darin fue pianista xD

What's going on here?

Suona da Dio
not a great version. Rafael Blechaz is better
🤣 6 years later and you're found out !
Don't.
Hmm....he's coming down on the keybed with an awful lot of force...hmmm.....
Carl Hopkinson probs struggling quite a bit.
