If you know how to drive a manual you don't have to worry about transmission repair like an automatic. I bought a used 2009 hhr ss and my father came over and we worked on it a bit to make it more like new. We changed all the lighting to led. Very easy car to work on. We repaired a crack on the back bumper and bought some nice tires for it and installed a new racing clutch. The similar design to the pt cruiser is only skin deep as these hhr are bigger, more reliable and much easier to do repairs and upgrades at home. The manuals are tiring in large congested areas but, open road commuting and rural back roads are very fun as it can fool you a bit that you have something like a race car. If you don't have the funds you can leave the radio as is and buy a 5.00 Bluetooth adapter for the aux port.
My wife ❤️'s her 2011 HHR Z24..It has a dealer installed Cobalt Z24 suspension with a 2.4 liter with a supercharger boosting it to 195 hp (I had it dynoed last summer after my uncle installed the SC)..We bought it in 2013 from a private owner..with 20, 000 miles...it now has 120,000 trouble free miles..the only issue we've had was a recall on the ignition switch
My 2010 HHR has 178,000 and going up daily. Oli doesn't get dirty between changes; Mobil 1 every 5,000. The GM 2.4 4 cylinder is as good as a Honda or Toyota that it's copied after IMO. The suspension is still tight and the only major problem was a wheel bearing. Transmission fluid has never been changed and AC blows very cold. I believe it will go a lot farther; fingers crossed. It was well maintenanced. I'm happy apain only my baby was Red and the one I found is a 2009 and dark gray.. Look around too many miles I don't like ...
To bad HHR's have the worst brake rotor warp problem. Rear drum brakes don't engage so the fronts absorb all the braking and overheating occurs, also the "auto adjusting of rear brakes doesn't work either. Well documented in HHR forums and Chevy got away with it. The engine and trans on my HHR seem solid so far as of 145000 miles and have not had a electrical issues. However as I stated before, if you like to stop when you apply your brakes the HHR is not for you.
Chevy's new ad slogan is "find new roads," they just don't tell you that finding those new roads is done by driving over the embankment and down the hillside after pumping your brakes breathlessly to no avail.

I purchased a 2011 a couple months ago, it had 57,000 miles on it. (It’s now 2019) my brother in law found it at a used car dealership, it was a trade in. He showed me a photo, my first thought was, is that ever ugly. I prefer a sedan, black or red. I couldn’t find anything with lower miles for the price, I looked for 2 months. No one smoked in this car either, and one older, an elderly couple. A few dings but it still smelled newish. And I love this vehicle! It’s huge, well big enough for me. I’ll never have to ask anyone to pick up anything that I get that’s to big for a sedan. The gas mileage is great and the car fax shows previous owner maintained oil changes and rotation of the tires. I’d much rather have it in red or black. This is the best used car I’ve ever had. Since it’s not a SUV or a truck, classified as a station wagon, insurance is very reasonable.
What a great buy Karol...and what's even more awesome is that they still turn heads everywhere you go and the resale value from this point forward is amazing!
HHR is my favorite. Had 3, 2008, 2011, and now 2009. 2011 needed new transmission at 160,000 miles, but I drive em hard. 500 to 5000 ft in 30 min in pm and the reverse in am. Nice curved, fast road. Palmdale to LaCanada gran prix! Every week day between 6 am to 9 am. My car beats em all except maybe Porsche of course. The 2008 was the best for acceleration, 2009 the worst, 2011 in between. HHR is good climber. But yes rotors warp fast, especially when the road was closed due to bad fire and we had to use Tujunga canyon road, with very steep hairpin curves. Bad shaking after 5 miles straight downhill. Get new heavy duty rotors, ok again. Great 1 person camper. Now have to take old husband so needing a different vehicle. HHR great for single person.
No timing belt or chain....that's the main reason I bought mine (used at 37K); it now has 67K and only problem I've had , right now, at 67K is blower motor, which I can fix myself. So far its been a very reliable car.
It's a timing chain Riff Girl...they are known to have troubles now and again so if you ever have a concern, check with the dealer to see if there is any kind of recall which might apply to your car.
Aside from the good things about an affordable vehicle, I am upset at my 2011 with 90k miles on it because the water pump went bad and its buried $800 behind the timing chain, Many folks assure me that the timing chain will be serviced costing more and nobody says less than $1000 to do it right. It will have to do until I can afford an F-350, Caravan or Chevy 3500hd dually.
F-350 might be the most durable truck I have ever come across...HHR's on the other hand didn't seem to stand the test of time. You used to see them fairly regularly, but not so much anymore.
Steven Harvey mine has 160 thousand miles no problems. fortunately if the water pump dies I would replace myself. why pay 1000 dllrs when the engine costs around 600 used.
It was definitely Chevy's answer to the PT Cruiser as the domestic manufacturers entered into a retro phase that has lasted to this day with the Mustand/Camaro/Challenger...but back then you also had cars like the Prowler and the SSR.
@@everycarSeattle right but again the main reason it feels like a PT Cruiser is because it was designed by the exact same person who designed the PT Cruiser
Chain is better than belt They took a cue from Hondas element motor which are known to go 500,000 miles without failure. A belt has to be changed every 100,000 miles. I think you misunderstood. As a mechanic I will take a chain over belt any day of the week. Much more reliable than a belt by far
Rubber doesnt keep tension nearly as long as metal. Many cars fail because the rubber timing belt will slip and cause the engine to be out of timing. If its not in timing, it wont start. Very hard to have a chain do that. Reason manufacturers have moved to rubber belts is because its cheaper, not because of reliability.
I have a 2008 lemon, A/C quit at 28k miles, radio quit around 30k, rear door lock quit about the same time, self cancel on turn signal broke at 20k miles, paint on hood is faded. Car has been garage kept, well maintained by dealer, never abused and only has 32k miles on it as of 2018. I will never by a chevy product again‼️
How to become an expert in less than 3. GO! You need to remove a front tire to replace the headlight bulb. STOP! Less than 3 minutes, right. Now you're an expert, now you know to stay away!
Been that route 2 tx before, got the scars on the back of my hands to prove it. AND the panel does not "pop" out. It takes more effort than that. BTW a Franchised Dealer in my area charges $150.00 to change the bulb. Tell you something? I'll save the blood, sweat and tears and pull the wheel. Thank you very much.
Scotty Kilmer says stay away from this car, unreliable, head gasket problems, electrical problems, you name it its got it....by the way the guy with the jack hammer is warning you not to buy it also....funny how coincidence happens lmao
Scotty Kilmer is an intelligent person with his own opinions, but the HHR has proven to be a cheap set of wheels that does a lot of things well and can be driven into the ground. Stuff that breaks tends to be cheap to fix and nothing ever seems to actually take the car off the road. If I had 6 grand for a thrifty wagon I'd rather have a 1st-gen CRV personally, but I'd be happy with an HHR, right after I got a buyer's inspection at the Chevrolet dealer. If they says it stinks, get another one instead. It's the number 1 reason people have q bad experience with a used car is that they don't take it to the dealer that sells it new to get an inspection...instead, they negotiate in some guy's driveway or on some lot somewhere and live with the consequences.

I've had my HHR for 2 years and love it! Lots of room for hauling music gear to gigs. They're popular here too (NE Ohio).
@@mettlerox : Would Suggest U Get Rid Of It Before 135-150,000 mls.Transmissions Rarely Last Longer Than That.
So, it feels like Chevy'sanswer to the PT Cruiser because it was designed by the same guy who designer the PT
Give me a text, if the hhr is still available?
oh great this thing has a timing chain. Lord knows that's gonna break eventually
Chain is better than belt
They took a cue from Hondas element motor which are known to go 500,000 miles without failure. A belt has to be changed every 100,000 miles. I think you misunderstood. As a mechanic I will take a chain over belt any day of the week. Much more reliable than a belt by far
buba426 keep the oil /filter changed regularly
Buba: You have it backwards, a belt is more likely to wear out before a chain.
I have one all black I call it the jeepers creepers mobile
That's awesome...in black it does put out a pretty sinister vibe.
I will never by a chevy product again‼️
what is HHR?
Heritage High Roof. Kindof corny, but it's meant to compete with the PT Cruiser.
Happy Hemoriod
Supposed to be a retro of a 1949 Chevy suburban
I see rain drops ' Never Buy a Car at Night or in the Rain.

Great advice...hard advice to take in Seattle where it's always dark and rainy, but great advice nonetheless.
@@everycarSeattle I'm sure you already flipped this rig and customer was happy' they're good cars.
You're right about that K-Trans, they really are good cars.
of course only 11K miles I wouldn't want to be seen it it either !
Would anyone still buy this
Let's just be honest these are junk I highly recommend that you don't buy one seriously .
Very cool car. They are becoming hot collectibles. A fun, hip ride. Good for beach trips.
I agree, very nice unique looking car.
Their slow but they drive nice and lots of room.
MINE IS NOT SLOW RUN LIKE THE DEVIL
Only 11,000 miles because it spent all the time in the shop.
How to become an expert in less than 3. GO! You need to remove a front tire to replace the headlight bulb. STOP! Less than 3 minutes, right. Now you're an expert, now you know to stay away!
1Klooch no you don't just turn the wheel all the way to the opposite side and pop the panel out its easy af I have one and had to do it before
Been that route 2 tx before, got the scars on the back of my hands to prove it.
Mario you couldn't be more WRONG!
Tunney couldn't be more RIGHT if he turned LEFT!
I have a White '06! That I just got and it's a GREAT car!
You twerped uninformed dinks can't recognize the sound of a 1/2 air impact removing lug-nuts from the wheels in a shop. Cry yourselves to sleep.
My HHR sucks
