Glad to hear Jen's input on the game too. Having another perspective is helpful :) I hope she continues to give her thoughts on the games she plays along with you.

That timer idea is really nice (I was thinking about the same thing while you were explaining the bounty rule).

I'm hurt by everything you said about Scrabble. That said, I've been looking forward to this as a scrabble replacement.

A few words on Scrabble. At one time in my life I lived next to a person that loved Scrabble. Sometimes we would play two games a night. And he was highly competitive. He usually came out the winner when we would play.
So one night I said to myself I'm going to get him and win this game. And here's how I did it. Instead of thinking offensively which is how most people think while playing any sort of game, especially old classic games. I played defensively. The best offense is a great defense sort of philosophy. So what happened was after the the first word is laid down. Several of the choice squares become available. So what I would do is if I couldn't take advantage of them myself. I would see to it they become moot or usable but only for a few number of points, by putting annoying words to either side of the choice spaces. So that even if my friend was able to use a triple letter score it was yeah I got 4 points.
So it effectively turned the game into a defensive smash mouth football game instead of a runaway train.
As a result only a very few words were over 5 letters long. As well as a tight low scoring game. I did win however. Whenever I play a game with someone who is highly competitive and armed to the teeth especially at a game like Scrabble I love disarming them and taking away their toys. And even if you do lose you don't mind it so much because you lost by 3 points. It's less painful.
As a house rule I do award extra points for the person who makes the best word. We come to a consensus on that. Also extra points for who can come up with the best story using the words on the board. Because believe it or not, especially with 2 players the words somehow form a relationship with each other. Especially if you are lucky enough to have the words spy, and lie, and body up on the board. And don't be afraid if you have to pass. Also another house rule of mine is to tell the person or people I'm playing with if you initially on your first grab of the tiles pick lousy letters. Grab again, with no extra cost. I don't want to play against myself. I'll just do a crossword puzzle.
Anyway try it out once that way and see if it's more enjoyable or at least less painful for you. I don't see why you can't come up with your own way of of playing the game. It's your game, and your house.

I have played this game 2 or 3 times, but never with any of the optional rules. Finding out about the bounty option, and especially the co-op option, definitely pushes this from something I am happy to play, but feel no need to own, to something I will be looking for in the future (maybe I'll have to watch your Burgle Bros runthrough soon...).
Actually, I take that back, I have played with the attack cards option, but I didn't know they were optional, and I wish we hadn't played with them! Anyway, as always, I think you very much for your runthroughs (although my wallet might dissent).

To tell you the truth, I've loved scrabble since I was a little kid. I would frequently play Scrabble with my mother (who past from 4th stage lung cancer last year) and eventually I began to win almost every time. Despite how much I love Scrabble, I don't think I could get into this game. The biggest problem for me is that you are constantly having to shuffle your hand, and that is too hard for me. I have a lot of trouble shuffling cards, even holding cards. (that is why I got a card holder from my grandfather. When saw I was having trouble holding my cards, on one of his visits he gave one to me.) This is unfortunate, because it does look fun.

I wonder if adding a bounty variant to Scrabble is a feasible idea. Rather than gaining a dollar as Paperback encourages, you receive a bonus ten points to your overall Scrabble score. What are your thoughts?

I don't think the AP is a big deal because you can work out your words while other people are taking their turns. A simple sand timer like you said would solve it if was an issue. I don't generally like word games but I love this one. It's one of the best games that has come out this year.

i generally don't like implementing timers, because they make the game experience much poorer for the person who would prefer to take longer. but i think in this case, timer + bounty system would work wonders :)

I'm NOT comfortable with Scrabble and never have been. Word games is not for me so this is a total pass for me.
But I loved Jen's input for the game. ^^

      P.S. I loved Brink! :D
We really need more multiplayer games like that: team-based, objective-orientated, cooperative video games instead of what Call of Duty and Battlefield have devolved into.

I would worry that in a competitive group that people would just lie and say they couldn't come up with a better word for someone's bounty

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  10 лет назад

well, you're under no obligation to, but I can't imagine why you wouldn't compete your hardest to get that bounty... a free $1 that you can spend at any time is HUGELY powerful and instrumental to being the first to get the higher scoring point cards (of which there are a lot less). so you could wait 5 minutes for the person struggling to come up with a decent $6 word and get nothing, or if you see it well ahead of him, you can give it to him and earn a $1 for yourself! :)
