Budgeting & automatic investing are essential for long term financial freedom. Knowing that you already have the essentials & are building your nest egg, you can enjoy life a whole lot more. My anxiety about taking a vacation, going on a weekend road trip, or even just going out to eat an extra once or twice a week is near zero because of that.
I work 60 days on and am off for 60 days. I save vigorously when I’m working and build an “off the ship” budget. That’s where I take my average at home expense and put money aside so I never dip into my emergency fund, never take out of savings, and NEVER take out of retirement. You just need to budget for a longer period than a month.
George, you killed me with the "using your old pokemon binders for savings challenges!" I love your videos and will be moving my money from my arts and craft binder to a HYSA. Thank you!

Or if you do you didn't list it in the budget examples. I enjoy this app a lot. If only my paychecks didn't vary by around $1,000 a month from OT. Makes it harder to deal with.

Hey George, I just turned 20 and started playing the credit card game. Can you share your thoughts on avoiding credit? I personally budget well, save 30% and tithe 10% of my income, and carefully consider purchases. I never buy on impulse and only charge what I can afford. What's the issue with that? Especially considering that if you play the game right you could make back hundreds of dollars per year and your cash is more secure since the card isn't directly linked to your checking account.
Hey George! I find we have kids friends birthdays all the time with 4 kids! Not to mention weddings and baby showers to buy gifts for. What group/category does that go under? Lifestyle? Shopping? Giving?
I would add up what you spent last year on these types of things, then divide by 12 and create a sinking fund line item in your budget with that amount called “Gifts”.
I never had a budget until recently, but my spending hasn’t changed because I was already spending enough to have a fulfilling life and saving 30% of my income. Is there any reason for me to keep following a budget?
@ I don’t want to save more since I already have plenty saved and I see no need for better clarity or management since I was already spending an ideal amount without budgeting.
For us we do finances monthly to track where assets and debt stands so we can monitor net worth, but we don't budget. Instead we just have an awareness of what our regular monthly expenses are and if we are getting the full value from them, and if there are ways we can cut or save. I feel like budgets aren't really useful for those that already do a good job of living below their means because they already have a thrift mentality, meaning every purchase that is out of the ordinary is getting scrutinized through a value lense. It also helps to have a partner where both are on the same page when it comes to finances and they bounce purchase ideas off each other so any unforeseen issues can be brought up and considered before pulling the trigger.
