Interesting perspective on the idea of "elements" in Hip Hop. I think it's definitely in the context and in relation to other "elements". I started (officially) writing in 1986, but as far back as Beat Street, I started noticing tags around the Town. Del85, Plato, Rev, Kaos, Rad, Ozone etc...early dudes. But the very FIRST writer I actually MET in person was this dude my family moved above in 1986 named Simeon. I won't say what he wrote, but he was killing it around Lake Merritt. Anyway, dude was a straight metal head, Iron Maiden jean jacket type who was about as far from "hip hop" as it got 😂 I think the "elements" exist outside of hiphop, but when combined, hip hop becomes an emergent property. Dope interview overall!
