After taking deep dives on this for as long as this has been a topic of discussion, playing in a church for 20 years, playing in a gigging band for 5 or so years, and mostly enjoying my time playing in the closet by myself. I can with 100% confidence tell anyone new to this… buy what you can afford, find a tone you enjoy, and just play. The most expensive Dumble amp, 59 Les Paul combo sounds different than the second most expensive Dumble/Les Paul combo. Sooo guess what, every algorithm will sound slightly different and even if they sound the same, there’s the guy that’s too smart for the room that says “well it feels different”. DIFFERENT TO WHAT?!?!? The Tube amp or the other modeler? Answer… both, of course it feels different, an old tube amp with tons of sag feels less tight than a modern high gain amp. So freaking what, buy what you can afford, dial in a couple of great tones, or buy a tonejunkie pack from any of the lesser expensive modelers and get used to the way it feels, then guess what, when you go from what you sound good on to a $10,000 vintage tube amp, you’ll probably hate the way it “feels” because it’s not what you’re used to.
Play what you have, everything sounds good in the hands of a good guitarist these days.

They’re all cool. I’m in the market now to buy one. QC and Kemper are top of my list.. the only reason I’m leaning towards QC is future facing… the underlying hardware is levels above kemper.. which doesn’t matter so much now, but as the tech progresses and QC keeps updating/unlocking more of the power of the underlying platform, Kemper’s underlying platform/hardware prob won’t be able to keep up at some point.

I couldn't say which one was which, but I knew from the first example that C was different. It had a tubbyness in the lower mid. Great job thanks for your work. They all sound good but Quad Cortex sounds best to my ears. Question: Have you ever tried the ISP Technologies - Theta Pro DSP guitar effects processor? I have been using guitar effects processors for 17 years. Owned many but my go to for Pure Tone for me since 2018 is the Theta Pro DSP. This unit has a Pre & Post EQ which allows fine tuning to acheive desired tone. My setup is stereo XLR out to FOH, 2 mission engineering pedals (Volume & Wah), Parker Fly Deluxe guitar (rewired front pickup to single coil). I have received many compliments during live gigs being I don't use an amp on stage. Theta Pro has their signature decimator circuit in this unit as well to transparently eliminate any 60hz hum from a single coil. I play Rock, Pop, Funk, Disco, Ballads, etc in a weekend working band and the Theta Pro covers it all. Very interested in your thoughts on the Theta Pro DSP.

I couldn't name which was which but I did think they sounded slightly different and had a preference. I usually preferred A, but sometimes C. By contrast I didn't care for B in any of the clips because it had this glassy upper midrange harshness that bugged me. I'm especially sensitive to harshness (which is why I'm not a strat fan in general).
Most of the clips sounded so similar that moving a mic 1/2 inch would affect the tone more than the difference in modelers.

They went from "not being able to hear or feel any difference" between it and the real amps they (apparently) profiled........ to all the sudden now they can that there's something newer to sell. It's quite obvious what's going on and as someone who owns or has owned a lot of plugins and hardware modelers/profilers: You can't really go wrong with anything made in the last decade or so. It's all good, if you can't get a "good tone" out of one of them you probably can't get a "good tone" out of any of them.

Damn, these sounded way closer than they did on the Anderton's episode. On the first one I really couldn't tell much of a difference at all. So damn close to identical. Once you started adding more gain, the Helix did start to sound... brighter maybe? Airier in the high end? Sorry, describing these things is not something I'm very good at. By the end I was pretty sure C was the Helix, but I did have the benefit of just listening to this comparison on Anderton's. The first two were so damn close all throughout. I guessed that B must be the Cortex because it sounded the tiniest bit darker to me, but it was just a guess and I wouldn't have been surprised at all if I was wrong and it was just my mind trying to hear a difference. If I didn't know you were switching devices, I never would have guessed they were different at all. I do think there is a difference, but it's so small it really doesn't matter.
Really, they all sounded so great. I think when deciding between these three you really need to look at price, features, and how easy it is to dial in a tone.

The only thing I got right was that the Kemper was A. I will say that out here in RUclips land the kemper profiler had some kind of Hi Fi or higher definition sound. And the quad cortex almost sounded a little bit hollow in the mids after I knew which one was which.

I have really tried to love the Helix. I think it has the best interface. But for my amp (Orange Rockerverb) I just can't get it to sound as good as the Kemper. I think the real tell is how they handle high gain.

    • @profd65
      @profd65 10 месяцев назад

It's kind of an unfair comparison. The Kemper is profiling a specific Orange Rockerverb (your Rockerverb), whereas the Helix modeled some other Rockerverb. Obviously the Helix can't sound as good (if good means accurate), because it's "impersonating" a different device.

Ok, so just watched it and I truly did know the differences. A. Kemper. More mid, fatter sound, lest string separation, less clarity. B. QC. Just in general more clarity. The big difference is the string separation. Every string rings out even when overdriven. C. Helix. Thin sounding. To much high end. Sounded harsh. Didn’t clean up well in the last test. That was what I heard. I ain’t lying HW! :)

Had all of them ,yes they can sound identical but what I would say is you have to spend way longer on getting the helix to sound like the others.
I do tend to find the captured stuff always feels more ‘amp like’ than modelled stuff but that is very subjective obviously .

I was right in the beginning and then I changed my mind and was wrong at the end. I knew that A and B were either Kemper and Quad Cortex and C was Helix. But as the video went on, I felt like the extra grit was the kemper because I've experienced that. There's just an odd frequency present in kemper that I don't hear in the amp being profiled. I'm spoiled with my amp as it's a one off JCM 800 modded amp that has established my sound for the past decade, and I can't faithfully reproduce it with anything else. Maybe the Quad Cortex will finally let me leave it at home.

Ive been using a Helix for years, but QC is so tempting to me. I thought for sure Helix was A. I'm shocked that it's C, and in every single instance I preferred B. It's just got a certain sweetness and clarity to it. I wonder if it's time to move to QC...

They all sounded very noticeably different to me … though A & B were definitely closer to each other …
FIRST TIME THROUGH, I liked B best for the first 4 rounds, but liked A best on the last round (especially the clean) …
(In fact, when I first listened, I just knew it was a comparison involving profilers/modelers, and not which or how many there were … and I thought one of them might be a real tube amp as part of the comparison … and if I’d had to guess which was a real tube amp at first, I’d have guessed ‘B’ … but what I was thinking above all was, A seemed balanced, B seemed livelier (hence I thought maybe the real thing, if there was one) - at least until the last round, and C seemed like digital trying hard throughout.
C was the ‘worst’ throughout. The most ‘digital’, for sure. My opinion on that never wavered … except, listening back again, I kinda preferred the Helix to the QC in the last round … !! I think this was where the grit the QC adds stood out most as ‘blanket-y’, and the brightness (digital-ness?)of the Helix actually seemed closer to what I’d expect from ‘the real thing’ (and to A) …
… in fact, hearing how good A sounded in the last round (and how gritty/blanket-y B suddenly seemed, made me want to go back through and reassess everything …
LISTENING BACK A FEW TIMES, I actually prefer the Kemper throughout (and kind of wonder what I was hearing the first time, in parts, that made me lean towards B, at first … lol 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ … though, as I mention above, it was the fact that B at first seemed ‘livelier’ (but that could be another man’s bright/digital)). I did actually think at first, ‘the more balanced one should be the amp maybe?’, but then I overruled myself and thought ‘no the real amp/tubes are probably brighter livelier than you think’ … which might be a hangover from my recent comparisons of real tape delays and various pedals/simulations, since real tape delays in good order are much cleaner/brighter than most people seem to think/have maybe been conditioned to believe …). Bottom line, never second-guess/outthink yourself, lol … … …
The Kemper & QC are ‘profilers’ … and the Helix is a ‘modeler’, right?
The big 3 profilers NOW are ToneX, QC & Kemper … right? (but ToneX only does Amps; no FX?)
And the big 3 profilers are AxeFX, Helix & Headrush … right?
    IN THE END:
    - Overall, I liked the Kemper best … for sure. If it does good FX as well, then awesome …
    - But I would be very interested to hear this test again, but involving the ToneX, Kemper, QC & Fractal.

I instantly spotted the Helix (I promise I'm telling the truth!) but I had no idea which was the Kemper/Helix on the second clips due to the Kemper/Helix having this high-pitched screech on high-gain sounds which the Helix lacks; the Helix tends to be smoother in the high end, as well as sounding a bit more mid-focused.
It's not really a better/worse thing, it's just different. Both sounded good.
