When I was a kid in the 50s it was either a RX or F class at the head of the train. Then the red hens became a lot more dominant. I used to go up and see the 500 class steam loco and the 700s and 710 and 720s either on the hills line or freights out to the north.
My Grandfather was a fireman on 207 and he used to take us down to the steam loco grave yard I think it was at Islington. It was 60 plus years ago now.
