- Australia has had an unprecedented number of bushfires this season and the plight of the koala has been front-page news leading to an outpouring of public support.
Images of the furry creatures with charred skin, blackened paws and clear symptoms of dehydration have dominated much of the recent overseas coverage, becoming a cultural symbol of the crisis.
The ABC spent a day with koala carer, Sam Longman before the current crisis, she has two koalas in her care who were injured in September in the Canungra bushfire, south of Brisbane.
Caring for koalas may seem like a dream job, but it’s also a lot of work.
Sam Longman spends about six hours a day, on top of her paid work, caring for koalas who have been rescued from the surrounding areas.
Koala numbers are in serious decline, suffering the effects of habitat destruction, domestic dog attacks, bushfires and road accidents.

I'm absolutely convinced that there are real living angels - This nurse is one for sure.
Yes those beautiful Koala's are absolutly living angels.
Looking after these beautiful Koala's is a dreamjob to me.
So happy there are people like Sam in the world ready to save our precious wildlife. It makes me so sad to think about all the other animals we've lost in the most recent fires.
many carers are really poxy and stand offish to people who offer to volunteer to help them .They hoard them but suppose its, great round clock care. They highly untrusting of people who offer to help them .
It's heartbreaking to see what's happening in Australia wild life right now
5 dislikes, really how could you not appreciate and respect Wildlife carers.
🕊♥️🙏🐨🍀
knight meh this is a qualified vet nurse that has specialised in Koala care for over 10 years 🙄 I don’t have “little reasons” .
These are just darling animals. I would love to spend a day with them.
Koalas are my favourite since I was little girl, they’re most beautiful and cute animals. I still cry when remaining the bushfire tragedy, I have a strong hope that Australian government will protect them from any danger as they’re truly our biggest treasures!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤🐨🐨🐨🐨🐨🐨🇦🇺
It's Humans like Sam who keep Australia great.
Actually its bankers, scientists, politicians
Sam is just benefiting the outcome
Do you eat animals? Did you know that animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change and whats the main driver for so many of our climate problems. Watch Cowspiracy online
its people that dont judge others or think they are superior that create peace and change in.all.our hearts .I bet u she wouldnt tolerate any one helping her because she is a control freak who hoards so called not able to be released koala.
What a kind carer . These koalas are so lucky.
Thank you so much Sam. You are a very special women and I hope you are being taken care of and truly loved and respected.
there is still hope when people like sam exist
She is such a kind nurse. Australians need to be more alert in supporting koalas. It is an iconic animal yet so vulnerable. Be more proactive.

I would love to take a koala home to care for but was told Im not allowed because its illegal but I see these nurses caring for them at home sometimes perhaps its their experience that helps, which I have no experience, keep up the great work!
Thank you Sam. There are others like yourself that make my job as a wildlife rescuer/transporter so much more enjoyable and satisfactory knowing that my patient in in good hands. Thanks again
👋👋. Great respects. 💐
It's sad to think what some of these who were released may have gone through in the recent fires.
Beautiful story. Keep it up
A lot of cuddles and a lot of cares !
🥺To anyone who has watched this video you might also be aware of the tragedy that is taking place in Australia right now so; please, please, please donate to anyone of the charities or wildlife organizations that are desperately trying to ensure that Australia doesn't see any of their precious unique species of wildlife disappear from the face of the planet because of the devastation caused by the 2019-20 bushfires. Every cent counts no matter how large or small your contribution may be. And please don't limit your donation to NSW charities etc. alone. Victoria & other parts of Australia has nowhere near the amount that has already been contributed to the organizations based in NSW. It will be a long time before we can rest easy again knowing that our native animals & even our live stock are out of danger from injuries caused by the fires & the starvation that will surely follow. This isn't something that affects Australians alone, it affects the whole world. It's an entire eco system thrown into chaos so don’t just talk about how bad you feel for these animals, do something. Do anything. Just help because we can't do it alone.🥺
What cute wee babies. If everyone in Aussie gave a dollar a week out would keep them alive 🤗
What about the thousands of animals that have their throats slit just so you can have animal flesh on your plate?
Choose Vegan ohh you mean Dinner?
Congratulation !
Que ermoso coalita s bebes
Sounds like Sam is a prisoner of love
Wonderfull person and wonderfull person 😘😘😘
she is gonna take in some of the displaced Koalas when the time comes right?
Koalas are one of the most beautiful animals in Australia. They need to be carefully handled because the number of these species have been decreasing. Hopefully, zookeepers can keep this endangered animal alive for the future.
Good on ya Koala Mum!
I felt homesick watching this video
Great work taking care of these adorable koalas 😘😘

They have to. It’s how they get the good bacteria they need to digest food. It’s even important in humans too. There are people who have had serious digestive issues who have gotten fecal transplants and recovered.
Anne Phair hakunnamapoopoo. It means no worries
Poor babies
I'd love to do this someday too.

That's a good thing y'all r doing 4 them. Its these moments in which im proud to b human. Dropping bombs to feed the CEO bank acct, not proud at all!
I know that the bushfires are the result of of a long outdated line of barbed wire, commonly known as the dingo fence !!
Drew the ivory hunter is this true. Explain more please. The Dingos would have if they were alive ese
If I were there, I also wanna to rescue the surrounding animals day and night even quit my job....hope there are a heavy rainfall cover all the fire....Australia's government is absolutely stupid for the policy and the work of preventing fire as Australia is such a hot dry place easy to fire!!!🔥🔥🔥......👊😡
God bless all the life!💜🙏
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😉
