"The nightmares will always be there": These Magdalene survivors tell their personal stories

- Around 200 women, now in their 80s, were in Dublin this week as part of the Dublin Honours Magdalenes event, which saw them attend events at Áras an Uachtarán and the Mansion House.
We spoke to four women who told their stories of how they came to be working in the laundries.

I’ll never forgive the Church or Irish government of that time, for what they did. People in my family were put into Magdalene laundries and it damaged them for life. I was raised Catholic but find the church and most religions tbh, hypocritical.

You should forgive . Justice and judgment belongs to the Lord. He will jugde them fairly. Be free from that hurt and forgive them. Christ forgave us , even on the cross he prayed for us, people who are sinners. I was raised Catholic too and I am free from that deception. The only way is Jesus, not religions. Folow Him not religions.

It’s just a fairytale. No need to be bogged down in religious nonsense. You can be free of those old damaging superstitions and live a life with reason and rationality.

They'd probably enjoy it. It's more or less what they signed up for.
A lot of them were abandoned by their own families, sent to the convent so there would be one less mouth to feed. Hurt people hurt people. That's why I've committed myself to healing from the abuse I endured; I refuse to let my own suffering be the cause of someone else's.
Its great that the travelling community helped her get away and feed her

Bless all these beautiful strong Irish woman. It breaks my heart to hear how they suffered. The Catholic Church should hang their heads in shame!!

I couldn't agree with you more! I went to a boarding school run by the nuns. Of course there was no comparison with the above documentaries but I DID put up with a lot of bullying from the other girls because I was very shy and withdrawn. That scarred me for life. And anyway the nuns were not perfect either. I recall our supervisor (a nun) telling one of the girls in the dormitory to stop coughing because she was keeping everybody awake. How ridiculous! As if she could stop coughing!

I'm 100% my mum was in one of these institutions. She was mentally & emotionally abusive towards me, & I have nothing to do with her.

I hope that an advocacy group will take this on and take the nuns and church to court, so they are punished with jail and made to pay reparation, because it seems clear the the government is not going to. These women and their children deserve justice.
my grandmother (dads mom) was put into one of these places when she was pregnant with a girl. she was signed over by her mom and sister. she never left, and they didnt meet men so theres only one explanation for how my dad came to be. he was then sold at 6 weeks old. and he tried to get his mom to come live with us when he was older but they wouldnt let her leave. he saw her for 5 minutes his whole life.... The Catholic church wants to answer for its attrocities, but i fear they never will.

can someone tell me if there was ever a Magdalene Laundry in or near Belfast? My great grandmother was from Belfast, and we have little to no family history beyond her. I was very young when she was still alive, but my mother recounted things she had said from time to time over the years. She had absolutely no love for the Catholic church, nuns or priests. One thing I found very odd was she had said she worked as a "housekeeper" in a convent at some time but she was Protestant. Had some tails of secret tunnels, and lime pits in basements. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
There was on in belfast, it was on the ormeau road and it was run by the nuns of Nazareth house. If you google the name it will give you some information.

If we all only got rid of this 'man in the sky' story that has put only fear etc into people for years, there is no judgemental man in the sky on a cloud, God is a loving force that this world is made up of, you will find God in flowers, tropical forests, insects, animals etc. God is all those things, and you certainly don't need a church to find God.
I cry and cry when I read what these precious souls went through. So many stories. So much pain at the hands of pure EVIL. God bless them each and every one!

The movie "The Magdalene Sisters" (2002) is so disturbing - and yet, some of the survivors claim life in the real Magdalene laundries was even more brutal.
All the woman they put in there should get all there bk dated wages and feel heart sorry for woman and children that had to go threw this ,Bk then the church was higher that the law ..

Your just on the boat as the majority of small minded people , do you realise how many different religions have done atrocities including this , this isn’t about religion for starters, how much blood does Christianity have on its hands ? How much blood does Islam have on its hands ? The people in power were the problem, not all but all the same still a few, only a few months ago there was that 14 yr old girl in America who was being abused everyday after school by her pastor who was what? A Christian. So this idea that a certain religion should be abolished due to the actions of some power driven sick individuals whose only purpose in life was to get satisfaction the only way they could , by putting the fear of god into people into thinking they were the closest thing to god themselves, no religion is free of atrocities and if that’s your stance that on then every religion worldwide should be abolished period

I started the madgalene laundries yet I was abused by the people who were there . My mother was locked up 5 months expecting me put into madgalene laundries left to die. I was in 2 industrail schools and madgalene laundries. My brother starved to DEATH as he was HOMELESS locked up left to die 😢😢😢😢

If saved can you let us know briefly how you got saved by the Power of God, was it a book, reading bible, a tract, someone witnessing to you? Don't forget to help other catholics by sharing full true Gospel. 🙏 Someone shared gospel with me although it took me a while to accept it seeds were planted & Jesus is my Lord and Saviour now. 🙌

The laundries were solely for girls women who had children out of wedlock, often their pregnancies were as a result of them being sexually abused by one of their relatives, therefore unless a man became pregnant than the answer to your question is no.
As it happens, the men responsible for the pregnancy had no repercussions at all.
For women only.
This is christianity.

Yes some bad stuff was committed by a few individuals acting in isolation but this persecution of the Catholic church has gone too far now. The church has done infinitely more good than bad for Ireland, yet people keep harping on unpaid labour happening in laundries. These women should be ashamed of themselves.

Last time I looked, unpaid involuntary work was the definition of slavery, which although being a popular institution in many parts of the world throughout history nowadays thankfully is outlawed.

My father drove an ambulance in wexford during these times. Not for long thank god. But he told me he would get a call to pick up someone... when he got there he seen a young woman with a small bag of clothes and a small bump... in his words. Took her somewhere in Dublin to the nuns until the child was born and sold by force......Then returned home if she was lucky
