One of my all-time favorites. I watched it the first time with my best friend, who was Greek. After that, I bought it on DVD and we would watch almost every time she would come visit for a few days and laugh like school girls. She left this world in 2006. Requiescat in pacem, Marina. ☦️
This film always reminds me of my late mother who passed away in April 2023. I really wish she had left my father earlier in her life and made a life for herself. I felt so sorry for her in the end but she was and is still the strongest person I've known. What she put up with all those years. I'm so sorry mum xx
This is one of my all time favourite movies! I know exactly how she felt - I lost my individuality back in the 80's so I did exactly what Shirley did. Went on holiday to South Africa (I was living in Zimbabwe at the time) and never went back. I lie, I went back to collect my dog 🥰. And now I'm living in Australia so many decades later. And I'm doing exactly what makes me happy, not what makes others happy.
@@2_thumbs_up_baby I love this film, but she's married, both her kids have left home, so there was nothing to stop her getting a job and earning money instead of talking to the walls all day. I say this tongue in cheek, but there are so many bored, stay at home housewives instead of getting out and doing something creative or constructive.
My ex-husband was a narcissistic wife beating alcoholic. I left him, brought 3 children up alone, and in 2009, I met my soul mate. Sadly, he passed away 2 yrs ago. Yet, even tho the kids are now adults and I'm not dating. I love life, and I fill it with experiences that help me spiritually grow. Never have I felt lonely, I appreciate my own company very much.
A masterpiece on so many levels, casting, filming, dialogue, the lot! A gentle film packing a big punch every minute. Unbeatable, no more need be said.
One of my all time favs! Saw the play when Pauline was in Toronto, one woman show, amazing. Have the DVD & l swear lve seen the movie over 50 times, even had a Shirley Valentine party , Greek themed. Sadly l married a Joe, same sort & even after 8 years divorced lm lost at 61. Hard to recover.😞
Just found out Bernard Hill ( Joe) past away 3 months ago. His career spanned over 50 years - I was always amazed when I saw him play Captain Edward on Titanic - such a versatile actor. I always get something new watching Shirley Valentine - definitely a fav
Thanks for uploading. Watching this film, I fell in love with Tom Conti and Greece at the same time. Such a sweet and truly touching film, thanks to all the wonderful cast for portraying this modern day fairy-tale.
My lovely looking friend went to live in Greece and, after a couple of months, the skin on her face looked old and haggard. The sun is not your friend.
I love this funny, moving film, it was also one of my lovely Mum's favourites. We used to watch it together once a year and it now brings back so many happy memories. Pauline Collins is brilliant, she was born to play Shirley and the all-star cast are amazing.
Love this movie, its such a feel good story, I wish I had Shirley's confidence to go on holiday and not come back to this dreary country, one of my favourite scenes in this is with Claymore the vegetarian blood hound, Poor Dog, he soon tucks into a nice bit of steak thanks to Shirley and Dame Joanna Lumley is great in this too as Marjorie Majors, a high class hooker who bumps into Shirley after many years. Bernard Hill as Joe is terrific too and I cannot say anything bad about this. ❤❤😂😂😂😂😂. Robert Bridgend Wales
I love the message of this film, we show it in our Women’s Five Day Program for recovering addicts, it says it all so nicely, love love peace to one and all……keep smiling keep hope in your girl heart….dreams do come true❤😊😊😊😊😊
I have been to the location where the movie was made outside Mykonos. Just like in the movie my friend and I won tickets to visit the Greek Islands! What an experience and we were also going through marital problems!
Its lovely to see pauline collins & julia mackenzie together then yrs later together in miss marples the pale horse what memories they must have x All the cast are absolutely brilliant ❤
I always loved this film. Despite how Joe treated Shirley, she realized that he was also lost. When she saw him at the end, sat on the briefcase along the water, she wanted Joe to feel the same way as her. I really appreciated that.
Spent my whole life thinking I would one day pull a 'Shirly Valentine'. Time snuck up on me, I guess I left it a little late. 🥰🤩Wonderful watching this film again. Thank you!
I think I’ve watched this movie too many times. I remembered so much of the dialogue, I was saying it with them lol. Haven’t watched it for years. Wonderful to watch it again😊💞
Loved this film. Great message and performances. Didn't Pauline Collins get a Tony award for this? Have to point out a problem at 22:35 Shirley drops a few hints that she's at a Catholic school yet when the head mistress calls for the hymn, they sing Jerusalem which is Anglican... something which would never be sung in a Catholic school.
1:07:18 I remember when, back in my London days, the language teacher stopped the tape in front of an all girls class and asked us if we had understood. We answered him in horus the very same line...😂😂😂😂😂 Tom Conti is definitely "absolutely bloody charming" in this role.😅
I think you would have to have a heart of stone, or just be in denial, whether man or woman of a certain age, not to find this totally relatable, sad, funny and very true. ❤
Its a pity all women cant find what she did self worth and a place to belong, most of us are mens personal slaves and it makes me sad, i love my man i do but life is mundane and i crave what she found god i sound like a passage from a book but im sure im not alone, she had the guts to start a new life
Try NOT listening to Stand by your Man (how ironic that this comment came from a man........seriously......) and start listening to and standing up for your own desires and self worth, you are worth it Sista. Life is short.....go live your dreams now
@@mandyclark6602 Yes indeed we are two different people both trying to help with advice - which ever way she chooses i hope it helps even just a little - I still recomend the Stand By Your Man route but im sure you mean well in your on way love

Let this be a lesson to all housewives and anyone else feeling downtrodden. Dont let life pass u by 😊
Let this be a lesson to all male partners. If you take your lady for granted, expect said lady to leave you for a better life! 😊
yes why not break up your family, divorce and become single and on the shelf, living on your own in your 40s and 50s, great advice.
On the shelf. What a load of crap

I think your going round the bend... oh.good ..i hope so, ive always wanted to travel 😅 love that line....
I think deep down, all of us middle aged wives/mothers, dream of doing what Shirley did.😉
Only if your with a man like him.
I know someone that did. As I said above, if they're so bored, get a job and meet other people.
My mum loved this film bless her , I think she wanted to do a Shirley Valentine and sod off to Spain!! Lol x

It’s never easy. ✨
Might it be the age not the divorce that bear upon you.
This film had a huge influence on my life.
When it came out I'd not long left my husband of 10 years. Watching this I knew I'd done the right thing.
Well done leaving your husband.
