    Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it :) What is your preferred medium or drawing tool for figure drawing particularly? Let me know in the comments below! And if you experiment with using compressed charcoal, I'd love to know how you get on ❤

      I Stuck to graphite pencils so far cos I was convinced that shape and form is the basis for everything. But I tried a charcoal pencil a few days ago..and the effect was wow..

      @@lorenzkrehankrehan4905 that's amazing to hear! Hmm, ...shape and form as the basis for everything... that could open an interesting discussion. I would be inclined to say, yes that is true... but there are also other aspects that could be seen as the basis - particularly if we are talking about the human form. Presence, energy, the quality of life that is present in the figure, that's not exactly a visual aspect.,
      But, yes I guess, it's all about how you interpret and describe shape and form in a drawing, or a piece of art. Art should reveal how you see and understand the world, and underneath the flat 2D visual aspect of things, you understand so much more. I think charcoal is such a wonderful medium for helping to describe that aspect of your experience, the way you understand shape and form beyond outlines, or simplification. Hope that makes sense!

    I am really happy to have met you here 🙏Siobhan. Your artistic style and your way of communicating make me feel inspired right away. After a year or so striving for accuratesse and proportionality in figure drawing this is exactly what I need now. Thank you.

    I like your video. I have been trying new methods of drawing. While I am trying to learn to be a comic book illustrator, I have found I am very good at portraitures and photo realism. I started out using graphite pencils, as I'm sure most do, then I started using carbon pencils and charcoal pencils to make the darks of my shading stand out more. I just recently bought a set that included charcoal sticks and might try doing some charcoal drawings. The advice you've given will come in handy.

      Thanks for this comment! Great to know this was useful - i would suggest you approach charcoal drawing as a way to experiment and be expressive as a way to inspire your character design and comic book work. Learning to be more gestural in your drawing can help so much when it comes to dynamic poses for your characters and drawings. Also really helps with storyboarding and thumbnails.

    Thanks for another great video. I mainly use pencil for my life drawing as I find when using charcoal I go in too dark at first. Ill bring some charcoal on my next workshop and see how I go. Thanks for the great advice.

      Great! Charcoal does take time to get used to, but it's worth it and I think you'll really appreciate the dynamic range you can achieve with charcoal when you are at life drawing. Let me know how you get on!

    I like using vine or willow charcoal for initial sketch, then using either charcoal or pastel pencils. I find pastels are a little better for details. I've tried Derwent compressed charcoal sticks, but they smudge very easily, is there something that's a little more "permanent"?

  • @MaryNovik2

    I have been doing life drawing in a class with a model for several years and often use willow charcoal. However, watching your video made me realize that my drawings are too light and that using compressed charcoal would enhance the tonal contrast. However, I find that compressed charcoal sticks, like those made by General, are too unwieldy and dark. Is there something between the two? And, if so, what brand do you recommend?

  • @coryshaw1975

    You don't find that drawing flat alters the perspective of your drawing and lends to smudging more hand contact? I assume at your skill level you have solved this problem and maybe this was for video presentation purposes? Or do you prefer drawing flat? Thanks - amazing work and lessons!

    • @Drawing-Life
      @Drawing-Life  Месяц назад +4

      Yeah i should probably make a video to explain this, good point. I get asked about this a lot. Short answer is drawing flat is bad! lol, I much prefer to draw standing up for a lot of reasons, not least as you mention it avoids incorrect perspective and smudging. But, yes you are right - my issue here is that I've tried many ways to film my process while standing, and simply put, recording from top down is just the best angle. So for that reason I draw for these videos on a flat surface, but it's not ideal. I'm hoping to get a better camera set up as soon as I can.

      @@Drawing-Life Makes perfect sense - thanks for the reply. In the case of this figurative work - it worked out nicely - the extra smudges add motion. Either way watching your process unfold is magical - every stroke meaningful whether oil or charcoal. Nothing wasted - such economy of mark making and all very lovely

      I often wonder if having the reference at the same angle of the paper - both flat - reduces distortion.
