Rotherham United Football Club used to play at the now abandoned Millmoor stadium. They currently play at the much newer AESSEAL New York Stadium.
I met a Rotherham fan called Dale on the street who showed me around Rotherham's creepy, abandoned stadium.

The guy that owned the scrapyard was the club chairman for a few years and tried to run the club into the ground so he could expand his scrapyard. He took an expensive loan out that the club couldn't afford to develop that newer stand at Millmoor and it nearly caused the club to go bust.
Thankfully the guy who was chairman of ASD Lighting and some other local businesspeople stepped in at the last minute to rescue the club.
Booth basically made the club homeless and they had to play at Don Valley athletics stadium in Sheffield for a bit.
The ground is called New York Stadium as the foundry you mentioned made all the iron street furniture for New York back in the day.

A depressingly familiar story. I can't understand how people like that are allowed to own football clubs. My club, Swindon, almost went out of business last summer due to the dodgy dealings of Lee Power but we are now under decent ownership. Glad to see Rotherham surviving and thriving.

Lived a few miles from here (stone's throw from Hillsborough stadium) and whenever I drove through this part of Rotherham (Or the other side of the M1 in Sheffield) I was just sad. The area is so run down it is tragic, especially as the people of South Yorkshire (like the guy showing you round) are the absolute salt of the earth. Engaging, funny, open and extremely friendly.
That said, there are some absolutely gorgeous areas in Rotherham as well and I'm sure the cheap land price helped Rotherham build their delightful new ground. Both the New York and the Donny Keepmoat are jewels in South Yorkshire's rich footballing crown. If you are still in the area, do check Sandygate Road, Hallam FC's ground. Used to love catching a game there, such a charming little ground.

I gather there's perhaps an even more interesting story behind what happened at Millmoor but perhaps not public outside of anecdotal accounts - the relatively modern looking stand structure to the right was never actually finished or used and was in that state for several years before they actually moved. I actually went to the friendly at the new stadium you mentioned as a Barnsley fan, I can't believe that was almost 10 years ago.

Was the old stadium designed by Archie Leach? Quite a treat to see both the old ground and the new one. Many old grounds are lost to redevelopment. All that remains of Colchester United's old Layer Road ground is a plynth marking the location of the centre spot. Rotherham have yoyoed between League 1 and the Championship in recent years; I wonder how the fans feel about that. I live in Norwich and many fans are fed up with the euphoria of promotion and then sinking like a stone in the PL. Enjoyable content, thanks very much.

I went there watching Newcastle in The FA Cup in the early 90's. Loads of mags who couldn't get tickets were stood on that bridge trying to get a view of the match.

I was 4 years old walking into this stadium, the Tivoli stand. it got me hooked, the best stadium I’ve ever been too, I’m 26 now. I love the New York stadium but its nothing compared to millmoor

For a 4 year old child late 90s it was something else. for me the best era of football I’ve seen it’s where I fell in love with the game. Maybe worded it wrong when i said the best stadium I’ve been too for looks and capacity but the atmosphere was unreal

Could do St. Helens - traditionally a Rugby town but the football team have been everywhere in the local area ground wise and Bert Trautmann who broke his neck in an FA Cup Final for City played here as a POW. I believe the POW camp can still be marked out on maps in the neighbouring town of Ashton-in-Makerrfield. St. Helens Women were also very famous back in the day and they were covered by the National Football Museum a few years ago in an exhibition.

couple of interesting facts about Rotherham united, they had the first ever black player to play professional football. They also played at the Don Valley stadium that was built for the Sheffield student Olympic games between moving from Millmoor to the the NY stadium.

Guest and Chrimes was a massive employer in Rotherham . It was a brass foundry and it was them that invented and patented the cock stop water valve. Because of this they had orders from all over the world. One massive customer was NY USA where a lot of fire hydrants and valves were made by Guest and Chrimes. I keep an eye out for any when I get in to NY but it’s not that often and I’ve not spotted one yet. This is also why that area of Rotherham was called New York.

I was there in 81-82 Chelsea visited and Rotherham won 6-0 lol. I was at the next home game v Newcastle 2-1 to chelsea too. Went down on a coach to Peterboro, then onto Watford got underground. I remember fighting after the game, police officer thrown off a horse but i was only a kid then.....CFC.

As a Shrewsbury fan, Rotherham, beat us in the semi final of the League Cup in 1961, beat us at Wembley in 1996 in the EFL Shield/trophy and in the League One Playoff final a few years ago. We did beat them 3-0 at Rotherham a couple of weeks ago. Good trip for you the site of Shrewsbury's old Gay Meadow(still a wall and a plaque) and Montgomery Waters Meadow I hope soon. Maybe take a trip to Wolves, Telford, Crewe and Wrexham as well. All can be done in a few hours easy👍🏻.

I remember going to the old ground back in the day we were in the home end but we got escorted out of their end by the time we got to the away end we were 2.0 down and went on to loose 6.0. But they were fun days I like thousands of old school fans would give anything to go back to fact

You should really come to Belgium once you can visit old abandoned stadiums here like de schalk in Willebroek or het Drielinden stadion in Brussels. In Brussels you have also rwd Molenbeek and Union who are really worth a visit. The cup final is in the near future and the champions play offs are also about to start in wich the games always have an intense atmosphere . There is many more too so come over and check it out it is also a small country so you won’t miss anything.
Ps if you want to sea the best club in in the league you should come to Club Brugge

A real shame you couldn't get in. Also a shame the bloke you spoke to had very little real knowledge of the ground as it was when in use. 14 years since its fina game though, and still there. Love the place but couldn't swap it back for what we have now
