    The "Ask before hugs" badge is something I was looking for a while back. Useful even if you're not going to a Furcon. Some people don't seem to get the memo that you can't just touch somebody in cosplay without asking first. I'm not opposed to the idea, I'd just really like to be able to see you and know that you exist before you go in for a hug, otherwise your face is meeting an elbow.

      I agree I feel like every convention should have this tbh not just furry and cosplay conventions since I think it'd really help make experiences better ^^

    • @TheFlauschig
      @TheFlauschig Год назад +7

      Honestly, thats the badge I do not like. Maybe the convention culture in the US is super different, but in Europe asking for a hug is the default expectation. Making this badge popular/a thing would really undermine that, because it frames not asking for a hug as the default and then basically forces everyone, who isn't a 15 year old weeb with boundary issues, into putting that badge on their fursuit or cosplay.
      I know many furries love their badges, but I really don't want to find myself in an awkward conversation about HOW I SHOULD HAVE WORN A BADGE, if I don't want a suprise hug from some (with my luck unshowered) stranger. It sort of shifts the responsibility.

    • @witherwolf3316
      @witherwolf3316 Год назад +14

      @@TheFlauschig I agree, it should be the default that people know to ask. Unfortunately, they don't. It's not serving as a requirement, just a reminder. It's kind of like a wet floor sign. Yes, the floor is wet, and most people should realize that, but some people need a little reminder not to step in it.

    I agree, we need more stuff like this, especially for people who lack confidence talking to other people/suffer from social anxiety.
    It can be really demanding for some people to be in such a densely-packed area, so letting them easily express "Yes I'm willing to chat" or "No, I don't have the energy" can really help them get the most out of the convention experience. And, conversely, sometimes people just need a hint.

I lost allot of friends over the years but the ones who stayed never tried to make me something I'm not and let me take my time with social interactions, they will say there's a party if I wanted to go instead of telling me I need to go or that I should help them out with something, allot of the people that were doing that to me, once I stoped, got really mad and tried convincing me that I was shitty and not being a good friend, even for something as simple as refusing to get up and get them a drink while at their house. I’ve always worn a big warning sign that says “ASK BEFORE ANY CONTACT” and so far that has worked great for hugs, conversations, and such. I’ve used this sign at 5 cons so far. But some people just entirely lack common sense. Once at a con I had my suit head off and was upset/crying in a corner over real life issues. A fursuiter with a “medical” theme and a squeaker took that as an opportunity to try to roleplay “helping” me. It was so unbelievably tone deaf.

    I am a neurodivergant furry (ADHD and ASAD), and the fact that these badges exist makes me very happy! The fact that they're becoming more widespread adds to that. Just during the video, I saw several badges from PapayaBadger that made me go "Ooooh! WANT!" and looking at their site, the first image I'd spotted was for neurodivergance, and further down was one for sensory overload, which many neurodivergant folks (particularly ASD) have to deal with. While I'm not able to make it to a convention for some time, it DOES bode well for when I eventually CAN, as it seems like my experience will be that much better. Many in the autistic community end up going non-verbal, cutting one's already hampered ability to communicate that much further, and badges like these aid that, and makes the already welcoming furry space that much more so.

  • @protoborg

    As I said in chat, Furthe'More had these in like 2018/19. They are about the size of a credit card and square. A green on with a circle, a yellow one with a triangle, and a red one with an "X" are double-sided. Green/Yellow, Yellow/Red, and Red/Green. This way the color can be seen from both directions. Hey there, I design & order the MFF ones with the guidance from Dozer our totally outstanding Accessibility Lead.
    Next year I'll take a picture for social on a lanyard so people can see that if you stack this under your convention badge the white part of the badge is 100% perfectly covered up -- it was designed for exactly that purpose.
    Regarding the material, we need to be budget conscious and if anyone tore their badge they can always come get some extra ones. It would cost the con an additional $1500 to get these in super thin non-tear plastic instead of heavy gloss cardstock and we want them to be free so no one has to second guess taking them. Convention finance is a very complicated thing and its best to just keep a mindset that every dollar saved is an additional dollar that goes to charity in the end.

  • @whoahanant

    Personally I don't understand the argument of "why go to a convention if you're not talking to anyone ect".
    The point is that I have the control to start conversations myself. Also I've gone a million places by myself 0 friends to tag along. Pretty nice controlling where and what you want to do without others inputs. Sometimes in bigger groups people end up planning too much together and it overshadows what panel or event you wanted to attend that day/weekend.
    I like going to cons with people and meeting people but also I want those few hours of walking around by myself doing what I want to do by myself 0 strings attached. Same way you walk in public getting groceries by yourself. You can just have a plan and be focused on what you're personally doing not anyone else.
    You can find these on etsy too. I've been following a shop and they've been selling them for 2 years so I'm glad they're taking off in our space.

    This is great! I really struggle initiating interactions with people I don't know. The thought of someone talking to me when I am not in the mood to talk pales in comparison to the awkward feeling I fear when I could be bothering someone by starting to talk to them. It is always the assumption that if I don't know them, then they probably wouldn't like to talk with me. I know that this is not the case, but that kind of attitude is probably a big part of the reason, why I am still single and haven't made a new friend for over a decade. I barely ever talk to people, unless I really have to, or if they are close friends. Seeing a green sign would help me a lot to put my worries away for a moment and start a conversation. I hope they become more popular here in Europe as well.

So I might see someone I'd like to talk with or get a picture of, but I don't want to interrupt them or otherwise disturb them. The one time I did build up enough courage to talk to someone whose suit I recognized, turns out they weren't at all interested in chatting with a stranger at the time. So we had a very painfully awkward interaction that just solidified in my brain "you're annoying, don't bother people dummy!" BUT, if I see a Green Circle badge, it'd give me confidence to go over because, yeah! they do like to talk to strangers. Likewise, if I have my own Green Circle on, maybe others would come over to me more and start some conversation, since I don't know how to. XD [PS - Can we just have wear these in every-day life??]

I had to explain to a photographer student many times that a cosplayer does not want to be photographed if they’re trying to rest, stuck in line to get food, in a rush for panel or hanging out with friends but the photographer didn’t listen and took pictures of them trying to chill without permission anyway. Having these badges will help get the point across for most at least.

    i ADORE these badges being made. as someone who has a shorter social battery, mostly contributed by my autism, this motion relieves so much anxiety for me. attendees violating suiters boundaries was my biggest concern and i haven't gone to a convention yet. with others speaking up about the importance of boundaries and other's support needs i feel like my first con experience might be quite pleasant!

    I love the idea!! As a people pleaser myself, having a physical badge to visually convey how I’m feeling sounds so much easier than repeating myself, as it can get tiring and/or come off as rude potentially! Awesome idea, definitely something people should be aware of even if they don’t want to wear/have a need for one!

    I love the ideas of these badges. We have all been there. You either don't want to talk, or people can't pick up on social cues.
    The only issue I have with colored badges like these is that some people with color blindness could make a mistake. One of my friends literally cannot tell the difference between green and red, and it was so bad he had to change MOS. When we were at one of the cons with these badges, he approached a suiter with a red badge. I quickly corrected him and apologized with a quick explanation of him being color blind (basically defeating the purpose of the red badge). That is why I like Papaya Badger's with the sayings on them.

    I suffer from extreme social anxiety, and this would honestly help me so much!!! I don't really go out at cons alone, but I think these would help give me the confidence to do so.
    I also tend to look kinda intimidating (emo and resting bitch face lol) and I feel like the green badge would help a ton when I am trying to meet new people but I just don't have the ability to go up and initiate a conversation. I think it would also be neat to have a 4th badge that is like the yellow one, but is a bit more open to online friendships too (like if we've talked online, are mutuals, ect then you can approach me). I think that would also be great for those who only really want to talk to people who already know them or have supported them in some way but might not want to be bothered by introducing themselves to someone.

I feel kind of socially awkward, and don't know many of the local furs, so I kind of felt out of place and a little overwhelmed. I dont know how to just approach people and strike up a conversation. I ended up telling a friend who I stumbled across on the last day about my dilemma, and he drug me around the con, introducing me to a bunch of people. Hoping this'll catch on quickly, would love to see people's experiences or even survey data with using these in a con space specifically.

    Real talk, thinking of adding this into my sonas' (plural) character designs. A collar with the badges as the tags. So if I ever end up at a convention one day... bam, there we go. Already taken care of.
    Additionally, I think adding a fourth option would be optimal. Not sure what the shape would be since the main three are covered, but a green "Yes absolutely, I crave social interaction!!", a blue "I'm nervous/inexperienced but yes approach me!", the yellow triangle "Only people I've seen before please!" and the red square "I don't have the energy but thank you!" because I see myself falling more in the blue than a definite green or yellow. It'll also solve the only two-sided card issue. Blue/green on one card, yellow/red on another B)

    I saw similar badges for sale at the last BLFC (biggest little fur con)! I love these so so much! I've been wanting to make my own! A lot of people have pretty strong opinions on "poodling" (where you show skin and "break the magic". However I'll be getting my first partial soon and I plan to always poodle. I plan to do this because I run very warm normally, I'm a very warm person and I can get uncomfortable very quickly. And with a fursuit this will be increased 10 fold I'm sure. So my plan was to make a little badge that says something along the lines of "I poodle to stay cool" or "Remind this Poodle to hydrate!" while silly I'm hoping people think it's cute/good way to communicate nonverbally that I'm doing it for my safety. I'll also definitely be buying one of the badges from Papaya!

    In some after dark circles, there are similar badges. Green checkboxes mean completely open to anything, yellow questionmarks are "ask first," blue... I forget the symbol, but they basically mean "friends only," and red Xs mean "No." They are often worn as bracelets and have a mild glow to them, so they can be seen from the dark as well. Fancier ones can be changed on the fly, as those are digital screens with a low resolution.

And while everyone was really friendly from what we could tell, we were too awkward and backward to approach anyone. So we spent most of the con to ourselves, rarely gathering the courage to approach people to talk. It was pretty eye-opening to realize how much we relied on our friends. So it came down to a really lonely and rather boring convention by ourselves. Having some sort of badge to like express to people to approach us and talk would've made such a difference. Because we were too backward to do it ourselves. Lol
