I'm at my first convention now, and my first day was awful. My friend was supposed to help me do exactly what this video is talking about, but they kinda ditched me and I ended up having a really bad day. Go with someone you trust, and make sure they won't run off and leave you to have a panic attack in the lobby.
This is a long comment I'm sorry but if you read this whole thing. You're amazing! For me, MFF 2023 was my first fur con. Granted, I have been to anime/fandom cons before, so I was used to the crowds, lines, etc. I had a friend who got there a day early to show me a bit around, take me down the dreaded sky bridge, and then I was good to go. I'm the type of person who can and will be all over the place. Now, I did attend more panels and events, but I did spend a lot of time socializing with new and old friends and friends I met through VRC. Surprisingly I did run into WAY more than I expected. I did have my VRC name above my head so that honestly helped out so much and is probably the BEST thing I have ever made. My one thing I wish I did more was go around the artist alley and dealers den more. I sadly didn't get a chance to walk around the artist alley, and I spent about 2hr's total within the whole weekend down in the dealers den. I peaked in here and there when I could and I had 1 full hour before the next thing I wanted to do and I kinda sped run then dealers den. I bought a bunch of stuff still and had a great time meeting the creators but damn I wish I planned it better. Over all, I had an absolute BLAST! Probably my best con experience so far. Now, I did take some time as well to bask in the moment. I hung out around the balcony near the escalators (but on the sides. PLEASE DONT BLOCK THE ESCALATORS! IT'S HARD NOT TO TRIP OVER THE PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU WHILE STILL TRYING TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY OF THEM!) and just looked around. Enjoyed seeing everyone seeing new/old friends. Seeing content creators that they liked and got to meet them. It was great. Though the biggest moment for me was the dance comp. The dance comp was what truly grabbed me into the fandom back in 2011. When I went to it, I had the moment of "wow..... I'm finally at the thing that got me into this." I got a little emotional not going to lie. It was such a surreal experience. If you do feel overwhelmed or got some anxiety going on PLEASE make sure you take a break. Maybe go out and grab some food, get out of the chaos of the con space. Take some time for yourself and take care of yourself. If you are staying the whole weekend, make sure to try and follow the 621 rule. That being, at least 6 Hours of sleep each night, 2 meals, and 1 shower. Please shower ya stinkys
I guess another thing you can do to combat anxiety like I have been doing while going to conventions is giving out little cards to people. At my first con, I was extremely nerve wracked and accidentally made people uncomfortable. So, ever since that con I have been making little funny joke cards and giving them out to strangers so I can try to relieve my anxiety while also making someone’s day! It really helps, and my goal at every con is to get rid of every card I have to someone. :))
I don’t want to go to a convention personally but I do find it interesting to see what a normal one is like. RUclips tends to show the crazy ones like Rainfurrest or Free Fur All instead of the normal ones.
One tip I would probably add is that if you are fursuiting (especially in fullsuit), never leave the con-space alone. Depending on the location of the actual convention, it can be kind of dangerous for a lone fursuiter to be wandering around by themselves. One of the conventions that I go to specifically tell us this because there have been altercations with drunk people starting fights with people in fursuit just to be cruel as well as some specific areas of the city outright making it illegal to walk around in costume (Likely a result of people panhandling in licensed character costumes) If you ever have to leave the con in suit, make sure to either go with a handler or friends or at the very least try to stick with groups who you recognize as coming from the con as well and be aware if there are any locations in which fursuiting would be prohibited

I'm a longtime anime con/renn faire goer, and I've been a furry for years at this point, but I'll be going to my first furry convention this year, and partialing at it, too. Thankfully I have someone to go with so I won't be alone, and I've already suited at some events, so I have a good idea of how strenuous it is. I went to my first con about 2 months ago, it was insightful to hear reflections of the experience from yourself because it made me reflect more on my own experience. I mostly wondered around alone at ANW--just too anxious to interact with other people during my time there. I am hoping that at my next convention--in about 3 months that I am able to try to break more out of my comfort shell and actually interact and talk with people for a change.
My first furry convention was a small one in Oklahoma called TTFC and it was the best con experience Ive had overall! I also was like you where I mostly wandered and interacted with other furries in suit cause I was just so in awe
Wandering around aimlessly not saying hi to anyone was literally my experience last year at FWA. 😅😭 Mainly because I have social anxiety. It's really hard for me to break that barrier myself unless someone does it for me. I had maybe three interactions that were really fun but I then dipped out again because anxiety. 😵💫 I hope I'll do better in May at FWA this year.
You bring up a very good point about con experiences. I have watched *way* too many MFF2023 videos, to the point that I can recognize when there's a shot of someone else recording one of the _other_ videos I've watched, and... there's really very little overlap with what _I_ experienced myself. Even if the person did possibly do some of the same things I did, they likely didn't record/include footage because it wouldn't get the views. (Which, you guessed right - my first con, spent most of the time at panels.)

Megaplex was my first con I ever went to last year and tbh it was a mix, wasn't the greatest but was also amazing. Ik when I go again later this year is I wanna just push all the stress and stuff from my life away and just enjoy the moment. I wanna go and see more people and suiters as well since I was being super shy lmao. For anyone who is planning to go to a con he was right, BRING A FRIEND, It makes things so much more fun and enjoyable. And if your tempted to do something? Just do it, it might change your view on something or ya might find something new ya like ^^ I was the same way until I went to the dance panel and now I wanna be a dancer/video editor. Going to cons isn't just for the experience, in ways it can help you find who you are and a chance for you to just let lose and be you. I really hope for anyone that is going to a con or just planning to has an amazing time and who knows, maybe it'll just change your life
NFC 2024 was my first con and it was last week I went alone and i felt that social anxiety get to me after the first day it got so bad i went home early, But i'm still going next year cause i still had a awesome time :D

you did better than I did when i started out in this fandom it seems. I seem to have become that fur that people use as a stepping stone to get to 'better' (i.e. more popular) friends. I have helped new artists get established who then got popular and won't even give me the time of day because I am not at the same status as them in terms of popularity.........

My first con was ANW5. But I missed out on a lot because I drove each day not wanting to pay for a room. Then I got a room for ANW6. The building got evacuated because of miscomunications between staff and the fire department and a fog machine set off the alarm. But I didn't miss out on so much. Now I'm registered for Furlandia. I haven't been to Portland Oregon since 1995 lol. I graduated in '95 lol. So looking forward to Furlandia! I get to meet up with freinds I met at ANW6 and I'm rooming with furs that live like 8 miles away from me and we're carpooling or caravan. I have a truck so I might end up hauling everybodys stuff lol.
Expectations vs. reality was the one that hit me hardest at FWA 2016, my first and only. Expectation: nonstop excitement. Reality: loungecon. Expectation: chill times at the dance comp. Reality: capacity crowd with the fire department kicking people out, real tall person trying to find a position where I could see since I was in literally the last slot and it was a crush of bodies, dudes behind me being jerks about tall person (loudly!). Also? The fursuits are oddly normal. Like you expect it to be some exceptional thing that stands out, but it's just folks doing what everyone else is, except in a giant carpet. Lots of people from the non-furry con upstairs had tails and badges by the end.
While i really appreciate the "drinking up the atmosphere" of the convention space, which can be quite overwhelming on its own, i wonder at 13:20 don't you get a con book handed after registrating out at US cons? Is it all digital nowadays?
What am I supposed to do when I basically have no friends (or at least none who would be interested in these things or who are not close to me at all) and want to try if going to an convention is something i want to do?
Hmmm, man gotta say the first part is already hard, because I don't have friends at least in my country, nor a way to get to a convention. Also I don't really have an expectation, except hopefully being fun. I don't know many furries and none in my country that I would like to meet.

I hope to go with my friend, and bring my partner with us to take care of us haha!
So uh, I'm in like, the UK. And well, I don't actually have any IRL friends who are willing to go with me to a Furry convention. Heck, it's hard enough just trying to get any of them to come with me to an anime convention. I'm assuming I fall under the 'can't go' group then >.< Kinda frustrating because the only convention I have access to is literally one of the largest in Europe >.< I'd even love to go home (I'm from Cork, Ireland) and attend Anthro Irish (Ireland's only Furry con so far), but again, really don't have anyone I can go with. And well, that really sucks, because I'm disabled (Epilepsy, AuDHD), so ideally I *would* need someone to go with even if it wasn't my first... I might have to just accept that the only one I could practically go to might be Furality... and I'm not quite equipped for that yet... *sigh* Ah well. I'd love it if things moved forward someday, but I guess for now it's just what it is.

We went to one or two panels, watched the pawpet show and uncle kage telling his stories. But most of the time we were in the lobby. I tried taking some pictures since I am a hobby photographer. But all in all it felt not complete. It felt like I was missing out on stuff. Mainly because I didnt interact with basically anyone fluffy. I really tried but my balls didnt leave the bed with me those days if you get what I mean...
Wanted to go to ANE this year but I'm not vaccinated and didn't have the time to get the multi stage done. Had covid and it sucked was like dying for 2 weeks was out of work for like 3 weeks and never got the vaccine thereafter. Maybe by the next one I'll be ready. I'd love to make a close one my first.
Was having some questions not answered in this video. Being Autistic and having other health issues that might prevent me from spending a full day in a complete suit, how does the community accomodate to such limitations? Hearing in another video, that the suit cost around 15000 Dollars, as a benefits reccipient, it will take me a long time to save up for the con alone, so it seems to me, it is only a community for people with more spare money that I have. It would be my dream to get connected to the community, though. Any recommendations? I am in Germany and met my first furry only last year August on a CSD parade.

still early in vid so hopefully im wrong but it already seems to be farther than me. idk how to figure out the cons. what ones are close? how do you know the one you pick out is a good one where the people wont assault you or scam you? can i ever get a number of how much money i need saved? it feels like ALL advice goes on knowing this stuff already. ive wanted to go to a con of anything i like for over 20 years. it feels impossible for me.

Had covid and it sucked was like dying for 2 weeks was out of work for like 3 weeks and never got the vaccine thereafter. Maybe by the next one I'll be ready. I'd love to make a close one my first.
Was having some questions not answered in this video. Being Autistic and having other health issues that might prevent me from spending a full day in a complete suit, how does the community accomodate to such limitations?
Hearing in another video, that the suit cost around 15000 Dollars, as a benefits reccipient, it will take me a long time to save up for the con alone, so it seems to me, it is only a community for people with more spare money that I have.
It would be my dream to get connected to the community, though. Any recommendations?

Definitely remember the 6-2-1 rule 6 hours sleep 2 meals a day and 1 shower a day
I would recommend starting out going to a small local con over a big one.

still early in vid so hopefully im wrong but it already seems to be farther than me. idk how to figure out the cons. what ones are close? how do you know the one you pick out is a good one where the people wont assault you or scam you? can i ever get a number of how much money i need saved? it feels like ALL advice goes on knowing this stuff already. ive wanted to go to a con of anything i like for over 20 years. it feels impossible for me.
