I had one of those wooden ducks as a toddler, it now sits in the LEGO museum.
My dad worked as a model builder at the themepark in Billund and overheard someone mentioning that it was the only piece they missed in the collection and my dad told them I had one at home. I got paid in LEGO sets, I dont know how much it was worth but I got a lot of LEGO. I'm sure they made a very good deal but I was more than happy with my payment.

We used to have competitions to see who could make the most survivable smash-up derby cars. They should make sets that are just blocks as well as the sets that build specific models.

Do comic books count as toys? I’ve recently gotten into reading Dick Tracy comics. It’s strange that most people don’t consider comic reading as reading yet the literary works of most of these characters go back decades and make more sense than most young adult novels.

I wouldn’t call them toys, but I can definitely see why someone would treat them that way. It’s definitely a slippery slope because comics and their audiences have drastically changed over their existence, but I would consider comics to be just a different literary art style that deserves the same amount of care and attention as other books.

You’d be surprised how common it is for woodworking shops like that to burn down. A good buddy of mine has had his custom furniture business burn down three times in about 10 years. There are many likely culprits but one of the most overlooked and easiest forms of ignition is varnish soaked rags…….which can spontaneously combust hours after the shop has closed because they generate a lot of heat when curing.

I know that a short video couldn't possibly include all the facts in Lego history, but several really important features you could address in the future are: 1 some other important building sets and their timelines compared to Lego, such as Lincoln Logs, Erector sets and a block set I had as a child in the forties with red bricks, white trim bricks, windows, doors, etc. for making and designing houses. 2. the use of tiny Lego bricks in the field of architecture 3. The astoundingly large population of AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego), which have international chapters which must be approved by Lego, and account for countless purchases, conventions, displays, etc. Many AFOLs have basements, etc. full of Lego parts in drawers and bins, which they use to make MOCs (my own creation) for those conventions and displays.
It would be great to see an ACTUAL timeline of Lego history along with other building sets history.

When I was about 10 or 11, I had this SpongeBob SquarePants lego set, the whole complete set was sold in separate little sets obviously. The one I had was a really big model of SpongeBob SquarePants and a big model of his Pineapple house. And I thought that was the coolest thing ever at that age. But I also remember when I was really little, I had some of my brother’s old legos and they were the ones that encouraged you to learn how to build whatever you wanted and they were the “reusable” kind. And those will always be my favorite. Over the SpongeBob model, over the Star Wars models I had, etc etc. you’ve gotta be creative and it’s sad to see all these companies that used to be so cool selling out and just making whatever for profit, rather than coming up with these unique, fun, creative sets they used to come up with. It’s sad..

The issue I have with the Lego company is more the modern sets. They are too specific, and yes I know they are themed in most cases, but the creative options with some of the more modern kits (meaning kits made since about 2000-2010 or so) are too limiting. I remember growing up and all we had were the square and rectangular legos. I also felt that the Lego Technic brand was also unique and very interesting, but it seems that Lego gave into big marketing and when they started licensing things like Star Wars and other popular kids movies and TV shows, thats when the true "original" Lego died. Yes you can still buy a bucket of generic legos (the original square and rectangular ones) but I feel that while the kits may have been successful, they limited the creativity in away too because the bricks were too specific, like a windshield for an airplane or a car.

I was born in 1942 in America. I don't remember Legos growing up. My favorite building toy was Lincoln Logs. They were limited because of there design, but with a child's imagination, I could entertain myself on a rainy or snowy day.
In those days we really didn't play with toys. Instead, we kids of the neighborhood played outside until it got dark and it was time for bed. No one had money for toys, so we made out own out of whatever we could find.
Because of my experience in using your imagination to make up games and toys, I am concerned about today's youth. Spending hours in front of a screen that provides every thing for you playing would take away the imagination of play. Bones don't grow stronger without physical activity , to name just one physical and medical problems from sitting for hours staring at a screen.

Very interesting. I also agree with the mother tbh. I love buyin the lego themed sets. But once I make them, I never wanna take them apart. Which has kinda killed the original joy of Lego. When I was a kid just randomly building with all my pieces. Now I just buy a set, build it and display it. Sometimes play with it a bit. Definitely lost of the soul of endless possibilities and become more of a one time use for the most of it's enjoyment

I grew up with a Lego Bucket that I don't know where the bricks came from (probably bought for my older sister as I don't remember receiving any) and played with them the old-fashioned way (no sets or instructions). But I always wanted more specialty pieces like windows or wheels!

The OG founder, going through many complications and hardships, knew he had a destiny:
To DESTROY COMPLETELY the soft feet and toes of every parent in the world!!!
I still remember my parents walking like cats on pillows to avoid our room full of Lego parts. My brother would build, I would brake the sets and scatter the fragments, and our parents would pay the heavy cost, haha!

I used to love the Lego Belville sets as the figures were like mini dolls and could do anything also I used to mix them with playmobile but one thing I doubt lego will never event a painless brick when you stand on it

I am sad this video didn't mention that Nintendo used to make and sell a LEGO ripoff called N&B Blocks back in the early 1960's and actually used the "System of Toy" concept since a few of their other toy products are compatible with the N&B Blocks...

I think I had a Lego set with a hospital…. Late 70’s early 80’s. I also had Lincoln Logs! I’d make all kinds of homes and buildings. As a parent I always stepped on the damn legos along with My Little Pet Shop parts.

BILOfix was a top notch toy, in my opinion. I still use it to this day for fast prototyping of an idea.
I must add that the feel of the beechwood struts is like silk under your fingertips. The system also comprised of plastic gears (including bevel gears) and chains.
A quality toy that is no longer😘

Thats the problem with Lego now, all licensed stuff. We used to have original Lego themes back in the day.

I don't have a favorite per say.... But, I have all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit sets, including the minis, but the Titanic I bought for my son, now is proudly displayed on a shelf in the bathroom. I think we have 3 5 gallon buckets, total of Legos, and my brother has about 8 buckets. Seriously, we just know we have buckets and about a fourth of them are from the mid 80's.

I got that pirate ship as a kid in the late 80's, I was too young to build it so mom did it for me, she hated every minute of it, it may have lasted me 3 days tops as I was a very destructive child lol.

I got a bunch of the sets when I was a kid, but they mostly ended up sitting on shelves like my model cars. But I also had a drawer full of loose bricks that had passed from my older brother to me. I didn't have to follow instructions. I could just build whatever I wanted to play with.

"As someone who just finished spending the majority of his life in prison, what happened with Legos? They used to be simple... Something happened out here while I was inside. Harry Potter Legos, Star Wars Legos. Complicated kits. Tiny little blocks🤏 I mean, I'm not saying it's bad, I just want to know what happened."
