By the way, this isn't the first time where an animated entry utilized the effect of the construction drawing lines being visible at times *Wolfwalkers* is another example
One fun detail I noticed is that when Rocky is looking for a gun in the car you can see that he throws around 2 pancakes and an empty syrope bottle.I think its a nod to the comic where Rocky's favourite food are pancakes
Regarding the 'rough' animation sketch bleed-through; as you mentioned, it was a clear design choice to do those that way, and I think it was in reference to the original comics. The early comics were done in a style that was essentially monochromatic pencil sketches -- well-done sketches, of course, but not with the standard fine inking and crisp pen lines you get on many webcomics. That is difficult to replicate in an animated show, but by leaving in the roughs lines in spots, they sort of replicated, in an animated format, the same roughness that the original comics had in a static medium.
Did you notice how they when drove through the sign, it said "Sable Stone Quarry" and then when Wick asked Rocky to elaborate, he said "Mr. Sable"? A clever hint to the fact that Rocky basically caused significant damage to Wick's quarry. I also really like the ticking tock when Mordecai had them in his sights, but also when Freckle had Mordecai in *his* sights! Very cool!
The webcomic is ongoing. It was on a three year hiatus while they produced the pilot. The webcomic is great, I've been following it for 10 years! Another thing, some of the Spindlehorse crew (Vivienne Medrano's team) animated on this pilot, and Michael Kovach, voice for Angel Dust in Hazbin's pilot, voiced Rocky in this.
I adored the construction lines, honestly; I'm all for adding those extra little progress touches, it really brings the human element out for me. I find it great when animations like these figure out how to balance a smooth, polished finish all the while making sure as many details as possible still make the limelight
12:36 dynamite is safe as long as it's not lit. That's why it was a much more popular mining tool than just using nitroglycerin, which was much more dangerous.
I'm blown away from just how incredible this turned out. The concept is really interesting, and the animation, character designs, sound effects, and voice acting are all incredible. Freckles is definitely my favorite character. His voice actor did a great job making him sound cool and cute, or completely unhinged when he needed to be. Fable Siegel and the rest of the team did an amazing job bringing this world from webcomic to webvideo. I hope it's just the first of what's to come.
@@MikeyVenturePsst I’ll let you in on a little secret, on their channel they have official dubs on some of the side-comics with the voice actors in the pilot!
The Season 1 teaser just came out for Lackadaisy! You should react to it to spread the word, they're crowdfunding to make the first season of it. They reached their first goal 11 minutes after the backerkit launched, but that's just for episode 1. It's still a long way from funding the whole season.
Something I noticed a lot especially after rewatching is that outside of the actual notable songs those few times there are scores like the ambience of the bar or when Rocky is throwing the dynamite, it's 1 instrument. Only 1 instrument is playing something, no others joining in. It has this sense of blending in with the ambience and sometimes sounding random and not part of something. That subtle feeling of a single instrument is really interesting to me and I honestly like it for those scenes
As list! 1. as others have said, the webcomic has been going since 2006; it didn't update regularly even before this animation effort caused a hiatus. PLEASE check it out! The art is beyond gorgeous, and Tracy's historical research and attention to detail is second to none. (And yes: the entire world is cats.) 2. I'm sure someone has mentioned, but: to fund this animated short, there was a kickstarter in 2020. Aimed for $85k, raised $330k. But, out of that had to come production of various add-on rewards for various tiers, in addition to paying for the animation production. 3. I would love now to hear the animators talk about this! Like, "making of". I noticed the construction lines too, and I'm dying to hear their reasoning on that. (I was able to dismiss it more quickly than you did, but I still did have that "huh!" moment.) 4. I'm not sure if we've heard whether they're going to try to get funding for more. I was surprised when this got posted with "Pilot" on the title! But of course, everyone would LOVE to see a series! (If not an ongoing, maybe a mini-series?) 5. there are things about the story that you will only really pick up on if you've read the webcomic, but I felt they did a pretty good job trying to show it without over-explaining. You got some of it, and you might pick up on others in a second re-watch. Mrs. M (Mitzi May) is the widow of Atlas May, so yeah, she's talking to his memory, or his ghost, take your pick. (Wick Sable, the siamese-looking guy who owns that rock quarry that Rocky destroyed, is her new beau.) She has been trying to run the Lackadaisy speakeasy (notice how the cover business upstairs is the "Little Daisy" cafe) since her husband's (suspicious) death, but his old friend Asa Sweet (guy at the end) is trying to consolidate his top position in the illicit speakeasy trade with his own Marigold Room. Once Lackadaisy was a genuine business rival, but it's obvious to everyone that it's fallen on hard times. The story overall is about them attempting to stay in business. Mordecai Heller (the tuxedo cat) is Asa Sweet's top assassin -- but he used to work for Atlas May, which explains the "you're not going to get sentimental" jab. Nico and Serafina, the Cajun siblings, are hired muscle from out of town (it comes across that Mordecai is not thrilled to be working with them). Viktor (scary bartender) and Mordecai used to be a team, when Atlas May was alive. (Viktor is Slovak, not Russian.) The fact that they're using Rocky and Freckle -- and Ivy, who's actually still in college -- to do their alcohol smuggling is definitely meant to be a sign of how desperate they all are. I feel that that's not spoilers; just a top-level summary of who's who and what's going on. I still implore you to read the webcomic, when you get a chance!
Appreciate all that info! And I agree, I would love to hear them talk about more about the construction lines decision. That seems to be getting a lot of attention
Dynamite is not particularly dangerous to handle, in fact that was the point of it's invention in the first place. Originally mining operations used nitroglycerine for demolishing harder material, however it is very unstable and can be set of by sustaining blunt force. Dynamite on the other hand is very stable.
“I’m surprised there’s no music playing right now,” he says as there is music playing. I mean, you do still have a point, though, in that it was literally just a single string instrument playing a few scattered notes, which is less music than might be expected.
Dynamite is made with nitroglycerin, making it extremely volatile, especially under certain conditions like heat or hard impact. You can actually shoot dynamite make it go off.
Because you mentioned Aristocats at the beginning, that was my absolute favorite movie growing up. I remember we first had it as a VHS and later got the DVD. I watched it so much the movie started lagging sometimes so we had to buy a new one 😂
According to the creators, the lines were left in as a nod to older Disney animations of the era where the construction lines were also sometimes visible
The opening sequence, with Rocky rhapsodizing and all kinds of unreal things drifting by, is supposed to be an insight into the somewhat-unhinged and quasi-hallucinatory way Rocky thinks.
Something that I just noticed, is that music only plays when it ACTUALLY plays in the world (radio, violin, trumpets, etc). I think it's a really cool artistic choice that I don't see a lot of animated shows do often. Also having the main character regularly play the violin definitely helped to balance out the lack of tunes. Definitely my favorite pilot episode on RUclips, the art style is absolutely beautiful and I hope this gets as much attention as possible so we get more episodes
Yet another fun fact but when rockey smashes into the gate while they are driving it says "sable". The same guy sitting at the bar seeming freaked out by hearing Rocky talk about dynamite. Rocky famously hates Sable in the comic so his maniacal laughter is because he's excited to mess up sables buisness. You'll notice he's all smug to him later. And at the after credit scene you can see Sable witness the damage and.. well he ain't happy 😂
Burke and Hare were infamous graverobbers/resurrection men who were indeed hanged for their crimes as they started to murder people rather than only dig up the already-dead.
I wish it was just a little break, last update was in 2020, Amazing Pilot but I do wish it was just slowed down comic production and not a 2ish year hiatus
I think the inclusion of the construction lines is an homage to The Aristocats. That movie had them too for some reason. Makes sense that a Disney-ish cat movie would reference *The* Disney cat movie.
I only recently started reading the comic (and sadly speedran the whole thing in a day, hehe) and I gotta say its great. There is so much meticulous detail poured into the series, from historical accuracies to visual presentation, its all so SO good. The story is also pretty dang good! If you liked the pilot then you might love the comic. Also, I gotta say I love Mordecai as a character so much. He doesn't get to shine too much in the pilot (time constraints n' such), but he's really cool and has plenty of comedic moments as well ^^
Held off on watching here until I could catch the whole thing myself! I had a ton to say about all the technical aspects of the animation, the playing around with aspect ratios, etc but while I noticed how tense some of the action scenes were, I didn't necessarily realize that it was probably due to the lack of music. In somehow only just realized that when watching yours. As far as the rough sketch lines left in, I absolutely love it. It gives it a more scrappy look that totally fits a project like this. Overall I loved the pilot and I will absolutely patiently wait for more!
Since both you and Mosco (Wee Lass Reacts) reviewed this, I gave in and watched. Then I binged Helluva Boss, but that's a different conversation. I noticed the construction lines immediately too, and if did throw me at first, but once I saw them on all characters it seemed to me it was deliberate and I was able to disregard it. Overall, I really liked this. A lot. The upshot is I want more. Think I'm going to have to go find the web comic.
i love that on the start where Freckle was carrying the coffin towards the car, and he drops tired, that was added as a joke from one of the people who worked on it
Lackadaisy has uploaded some official comic dubs on their page as well, if you're interested in the background of these characters! (and to tide you over until an eventual continuation i suppose?) I've been following the comic since highschool, and they're very, very entertaining
The lines gave me very Aristocats vibes. Also it took them like 3 years to get this made? I'm so proud of them for making it and it's so good. You might recognize ProZD :D
In case you want to know who some of the VAs are and what they are known for, there are three I recognized that you may or may not know. Rocky is voiced by Michael Kovach, who is best known for his roles as Angel Dust from the Pilot episode of VivziePop’s Hazbin Hotel, as well as Serial Designation N from Glitch Production’s Murder Drones. Mordecai is voiced by SungWon Cho, who is better known on RUclips as ProZD. He also voices Ratatoskr in God of War: Ragnarok. Viktor (the Russian barkeep) and Asa Sweet (the guy Mordecai was talking to on the phone in the post credits scene) is voiced by Jason Marnocha, who is known as the voice actor for Marco in Glitch Production’s Meta Runner, Carmine from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, The Demon King from Seven Deadly Sins, along with many other roles in different Anime. Other than these three I don’t think I recognize anyone else, but I hope this somewhat helps!
i just read the webcomic and i think its still ongoing? it looks like its been on hiatus since the animation started tho its really well done you should check it out :)
I’m curious to see more of it. I like the animation, the colors and the characters. It also has some Cuphead vibe with the 1920-1930 period and I appreciate it. And I’m a violin player too 😅Well, see you 😊
The music is really good, atleast for the normal people like me. Aspecially in the scene where frecklesses mentality got triggered by the tommy gun. The music sounds to be old but it had some bass to it
You should also watch the new ducktales, its a really good show, i know you said you are gonna stick to a few shows for now, but i do highly recommend ducktales
I like that you are critical of the video, instead of just blindly praising it like most people. You are definitely sugarcoating your criticisms though. If you don't like something, just say it
I do like it very much as a whole, but not in love with it…yet. I’m throwing it a bone since I know they didn’t have a big team, and probably not a lot of money to make it, so I take that into account. But there’s a lot of promise. And while the decision to go with the construction lines grew on me, I still am not in love with that decision. I don’t think I would like for them to go with that if it were to become a series, because it can be a little distracting personally
@@MikeyVenture Woah you gave me a whole review. I actually agree with your criticisms completely. In your credit, you seem to be very considerate of their situation of being an indie company. The fact that it took them two years to make this is very telling of their resources, and I hope it doesn't take them as long to make episode 2.
When it comes to taste/opinions on art, ppl r going to be kinder just cuz if someone isn’t into an art style, it doesn’t mean that that the quality of the production as a whole is bad. It’s just an artistic choice that won’t please everyone. There are series I love with artistic choices I’m not fond of, and while I will dislike it, I will sugarcoat the criticisms since I know it’s just a me thing.
Regarding the construction lines.. it's partially referencing the comic then it's also meant to be similar to the sketching of old Disney animation. Also hardly anyone talks about the sketch feel. I think your the first to really hag on it.
Well you sort of need to thank US copyright laws, and RUclips for constantly blocking my videos unless I edit them heavily. Out of my hands, sorry. Most reactions on RUclips are like this
@@MikeyVenture Well ive seen at least 5 other people reacting to this specific pilot and none of them edited anything out, besides youtube has stepped down a little last i heard.
Well if they have stepped down, then they skipped over my channel 😂 I get blocks and demonetization for most of my videos. Sorry you didn’t like the video, but I’m just trying to deal with the hand I’ve been dealt.
We know he’s straight at least. Both him and Sable have a thing for Mitzi, and vice versa. In one Q&A, someone asked what relationship would be pursued and it kinda ended with a joke of “why not both”? So maybe that line was a nod to/foreshadowing the idea of a polyamory between the 3 of them lol.

Lackadaisy has uploaded some official comic dubs on their page as well, if you're interested in the background of these characters! (and to tide you over until an eventual continuation i suppose?) I've been following the comic since highschool, and they're very, very entertaining
Oh very cool! I’ll have to seek it out when I get the opportunity
Kovach is the only one I’m familiar with 😂 Of course because of Hazbin
Just watched this pilot last week. I was terrified of Rocky in the dynamite scene, I believe he and Freckle are a BIT……psychologically imbalanced.
lots of people seeing this cat show. Makes me want to have people see Fritz the Cat if ":Cats doing dark stuff" is the new trend.
I have only heard of Fritz, but never sought it out. That was the 70s, right?
@@MikeyVenture '72
Yes, exactly what I thought lol
@@MikeyVenture I believe so. Fritz the Cat is a 1972 American independent adult animated black comedy film written and directed by Ralph Bakshi
Very good this series that they have just done, I can't wait to see more of this.
If you do ever decide to watch Murder Drones, you might recognize one of the voices now.
There will be a poll on my Patreon soon to decide the next show on the channel, and that will be on the list. It gets recommended enough haha
I finally found a video I can watch without my mom getting mad at me 😭
I can't believe I was in the first 2k views, never knew about it but got it to my recommendation and I clicked on it
Yeah it seems like this pilot is gaining some traction. So much potential here!
If you are looking into animation pilots I would recommend cliffside. It's set in the wild west.
Me when I ever see explosive in any games: 10:49
Yo great vid I also recommend you react to murrder drones it another animated youtube show and the voice of rocky is also in it
Also watch Internecion Cube!
A really good dark comedy series also made by Liam Vickers (the creator of murder drones)
i just read the webcomic and i think its still ongoing? it looks like its been on hiatus since the animation started tho
its really well done you should check it out :)
Yeah, I bounced from Wee Lass Reacts to Mikey. Haha
I’m curious to see more of it. I like the animation, the colors and the characters. It also has some Cuphead vibe with the 1920-1930 period and I appreciate it. And I’m a violin player too 😅Well, see you 😊
Definitely a Cuphead feel in regards to the animation! I hope we get more. For both shows!
The music is really good, atleast for the normal people like me. Aspecially in the scene where frecklesses mentality got triggered by the tommy gun. The music sounds to be old but it had some bass to it
I loved the section where that bass came in and was really thumping. Gave it a cool modern spin to it
I got less an Aristocats feel and more of a Cats Don't Dance vibe
You should also watch the new ducktales, its a really good show, i know you said you are gonna stick to a few shows for now, but i do highly recommend ducktales
It is on my list! So maybe one day
@@MikeyVenture Yay
Bless me bagpipes!
Ha, you thought nick cave, I thought Tom Waits. Pulling from similar traditions, really.
Oh hell yeah. I can hear Tom Waits there
I like that you are critical of the video, instead of just blindly praising it like most people.
It just threw me off is all. I’ve watch a lot of animated shows in my 37 years, and I haven’t seen something like that in a long long time
Im a new viewer and ngl i don't like how you hide the video everytime you talk or when you skip small parts of the video, kinda ruins the fun /:
Well you sort of need to thank US copyright laws, and RUclips for constantly blocking my videos unless I edit them heavily. Out of my hands, sorry. Most reactions on RUclips are like this
@@MikeyVenture Well ive seen at least 5 other people reacting to this specific pilot and none of them edited anything out, besides youtube has stepped down a little last i heard.
Well if they have stepped down, then they skipped over my channel 😂 I get blocks and demonetization for most of my videos. Sorry you didn’t like the video, but I’m just trying to deal with the hand I’ve been dealt.
is Zib gay??
I don't think so? The creator hasn't said anything about him yet.
Most likely bisexual
