To make some sense of life
We're neither pure nor wise nor good
We'll do the best we know
We'll build our house and chop our wood
    And make our garden grow
    And make our garden grow
I thought the world was sugar cake
    For so our master said
But now I'll teach my hands to bake
    Our loaf of daily bread
We're neither pure nor wise nor good
We'll do the best we know
We'll build house and chop our wood
    And make our garden grow
    And make our garden grow
Let dreamers dream what worlds they please
    Those edens can't be found
    The sweetest flowers
    The fairest trees
    Are grown in solid ground
We're neither pure nor wise nor good

This is a fine performance - as the Proms should be - but the most perfect I have found was a "staged concert" a few years earlier in NYC. New York Philharmonic, Conductor: Marin Alsop, starring Paul Groves and Kristin Chenoweth. Groves couples a magnificent voice with a bumptious boyishness and Chenoweth IS Cunegonde!! 4'10 and a powerhouse coloratura! The entire performance is also posted on RUclips - a national treasure. The vocal clarity from itty bitty Kristin down to the full chorus is amazing.

This is a great performance overall, although I would not be inclined to cast Julian Ovenden, whom I almost always adore as Candide. He is too much baritone and not enough really free tenor to do full justice to the role. John Wilson makes magic with what ever he conducts with his orchestra.
