I love the French cleat system. The modularity of it just takes all the pressure away from making tool holders. Like if you get it wrong or you want to change something it’s so flexible and you don’t lose all the time you spent. Your holders are really nice
For sure! I been getting more hand planes. So I been thinking of making a hand plane till. But I can repurpose the current individual shelves for something else later
Fantastic work Dave. It’s literally like a brand new shop you have to work from. 😍 100% agree on the French cleat walls comments. I need to follow your lead and do the same in mine. 👌
Thanks for watching. I forget what it looks like before and glad. I documented it a bit. I love French cleats and making holders. It’s a fun way to use up scraps and learn some basic woodworking stuff.
Love the video, very inspiring, and what a massive improvement! Your tool holders are a thing of beauty. Gonna try to work up a version of your tablesaw cart pretty soon! Keep up the awesome work, Dave!
Dave, great video! also, I'd love to see your printer setup! and yeah, Paul Sellers is a hand tool God! I swear he can do things faster with hand tools than I can with power tools. and way more accurate, too!
Great video and great transformation in one year. I wish my 1+ car garage shop was as organized and clean as yours. I have found it is handy to have a portable planer. I have mine mounted on an old night stand on casters and it doesn't take up much floor space. It is very noisy though, so I use it outside. Sorry neighbors.
Nice walkthrough Dave! I started setting up my 1 car garage shop a few months ago. It seems like you're about a year ahead of me in terms of organization and setup, so it's helpful to see how you used your space.
I know when I was trying to figure out. I was watching and reading everything I could. I hope some of the ideas might help you in some way. I do think that working in it more helped shape how to use the space. It’s also constantly evolving.
@@3ddiy Yup, it's definitely helpful. I've been back and forth between peg boards vs french cleats, but I'm leaning towards french cleats. I'm planning on making a workbench soon with laminated plywood, yours looks really nice, I'm not settled on a design yet though. Some of the trickiest decisions seem to be around big tools or even how many how medium-sized benchtop tools the space can handle before things get too cramped. I don't have a planer or jointer, and like you, I'm exploring the hand tool route to cover some of their use cases. But I do already have a CNC machine with about a 5'x5' footprint from a previous business, I really want to find a way to make it work without it being a big chunk of otherwise unusable space. The shaper you have seems like a great solution, for CNC functionality with a super tiny foot print.
@@richnelson2042 I considered pegboard too at first. But I’m glad I went with French cleats. I think there is so much you can come up with French cleat holders that you make and have fun with. Pegboards your kinda stuck spending more time looking for and buying accessories. Love to see what you come up with.
Thanks so much for watching. Glad I can help give you some ideas. Follow me on IG as I have been posting more updates to it and improvements. Eventually I'll do another updated shop video in a couple of years.
Did you ever figure out what those big hollow concrete triangles were that were protruding from the garage walls? I literally spent 30 minutes googling keywords trying to figure it out but had no luck... Thanks for the tour!
No!!! I was hoping the internet was going to tell me! Thanks for trying. The reason I thought it was for a boat storage is that both columns look like they had a 4 screw plate that went in the same spot that would have ran something straight across. The height was just about the same height as a pick up truck. Back in the day I saw that they used to run hitches in the middle of the pick up bed. So maybe the bar was a support for the trailer. Just looked it up it’s called a gooseneck hitch. That’s my only guess. That makes sense in my head. It drives me nuts. It’s going to be one of life’s biggest mysteries.
@@3ddiy btw, I was browsing 3D printing videos and I saw this guy re-uploaded your 3D printed planter video and put music over it ruclips.net/video/TAa7ITy3wXo/видео.html
It’s 76, I did a lot of mods inside. The engine was rebuilt with a 1000cc bore kit, new modern carbs, and suspension and lighter flywheel. The previous owner had dual disk brakes put in for the front. So it is essentially a 100S but looks like a normal R90. Looks wise it’s pretty stock. Even the original seat and rear badge.
Nice shop, Dave! Just got the same Ryobi drill set, do you have a Thingiverse link for those french cleat drill holders? Would love to print some for my shop.
For most of the drills. I used this model. For the torque you will need to scale it up slightly. www.thingiverse.com/thing:1372590 For the glue gun you can find it in my designs page. You should be able to find a few more of the cleat holders and things in there. www.thingiverse.com/3ddiy/designs
Nice improvement. I like the boom arm -- this seems like an excellent match to your tool setup. What do you do with the track saw vs. table saw? I ultimately got a jointer not for rough lumber but because it was hard to get truly flat/square lumber.
I think a track saw is a must if you are dealing with lots of large sheets of plywood. Which I use a lot. It’s safer to break it all down then go to the table saw for any ripping. Or small enough to cross cut on my cross cut sled. I have a few ways I can make something square, the track, the table saw and my hand planes. I don’t do it often. So what I have is fine. If I did do rough lumber more and panel glue ups I would consider a jointer. Or a planer jointer combo.
The Dyson for the house just lives in the garage and charges there. But I do use it to vacuum up the small stuff sometimes. It’s just really easy to use love that thing. I have even used a roomba in the shop too. It’s just whatever is easiest. The festool might be connected to a tool and I do t want to get the hose. I can just reach for the Dyson.
@@johnmanfra4224 I don't remember exactly but I just figured out the square footage plus some extra for edges or for the future in case anything gets messed up. With some of the left overs I lined one of my front closets for muddy boots and stuff.
Absolutely love your french cleat ideas...and the floors!
Nice improvements and a nice BMW too!
I have probably seen at least 25 shop tours. A lot of them are bigger and better but this is really my favorite.
Wow thanks so much. I love it too. Obviously haha.

Awesome work buddy, great use of the space you have available. 👍👍🍻
What an odd concrete molding. The only thing I could think of would be a shelf support.
Very inspiring shop tour! I need to get a french cleat wall :)

You did a great job transforming your space. What was once a garage with a few tools is now a real woodworking shop that fits what you do. Well done.

Great rework of your space! I really like that floor, too. Those little bloopers at the beginning had me chuckling 😄
