Couldn't agree more - when is a prisoner exchange not a prisoner exchange - when Pu7in and Turkey is involved. I have to wonder WHY Turkey is supposedly in NATO, when all it appears to do is block other countries joining NATO unless it is in Turkeys interests.
Given why Turkey wanted to join NATO I would have expected more, in respect to Ru55ias invasion of Ukraine:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_in_NATO#Relations_with_NATO_member_states
BACKGROUND - Turkey sought to become a member of NATO because it wanted a security guarantee against a potential invasion by the Soviet Union, which made several overtures towards control of the Straits of the Dardanelles.[3] In March 1945, the Soviets terminated the Treaty of Friendship and Non Aggression to which the Soviet Union and Turkey had agreed on in 1925.[4] In June 1945, the Soviets demanded the establishment of Soviet bases on the Straits in exchange for a reinstatement of this treaty.[4] The Turkish President Ismet Inönu and the Speaker of the Parliament responded decisively, avowing Turkey's readiness to defend itself.[4]

Turkey arranged this deal and managed to get good credit for it, but now Erdoğan has to keep the word of not releasing them until the end of the conflict.
As hard and unfair as it might seem I believe it would be easier for prisoners in Russia to escape or being exchanged than this particular group being returned earlier.

I cannot express my admiration and respect for these warriors enough. I only wish more of them are out of Russian custody. These five people will come home soon and see how the 3rd Brigade that they started has remained a powerful force in this war. They will be proud of their men and have regret that they were not able to participate in the coming victory themselves. Glory to Ukraine, victory is near.

I find it unfair towards regular POWs actually imprisoned by the enemy, to compare what is technically banishment in a third-party state to the kind of hellish captivity that is the reality of Ukrainian servicemen in Russian hands.
Palamar and other Azov commanders were released from Russian imprisonment following the agreement reached with the help of Turkey and which they themselves also agreed to, under the condition that they will be hosted by Turkey and not leave it while the war is ongoing. They are not behind bars, they are not starved, mistreated nor tortured. They have good living conditions, are provided with comfortable rooms, have good diet, sports equipment, good medical care etc. This had been confirmed by Vasyl Bondar, the Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey. He also said: "What is limited, of course, is their movement and free access to communications with the outside world". They are allowed to have their families visit them regularly. I imagine they can't just be roaming the country freely all the time because they would put themselves in the risk of assassination by Russian agents. And they are probably prohibited from contacting the troops they used to command etc. which could've been considered a form of military activity. I can also imagine very well Russian side required they would be put under oversight to prevent any possible attempts of flight.
Even if they refused their families' visits in sign of solidarity with real POWs in Russia, that was their choice entirely, and I don't really see how it's helping the said POWs. It's not like Russians allow them any access to information about the surrounding world and current events, so the said POWs won't even know about it. It surely is making their families very sad, affecting their young children in particular.

Russia only needs prisoners that it has interest to swap. These are too tough and dangerous to be let free to Ukraine. The alternative being indefinite imprisonment and very possible death for such men (do they really had to use the Wolfsangel!), and given such prisoners are precious enough to be used in a swap, Turkey's intervention made possible a solution where they were swapped but not to Ukraine. Turkey not fulfilling its commitment would make impossible such deals in the future.
