  • André Bertel Sensei provides tips for improving your Karate punches (Zuki).
    00:00 Partner speed exercise in Kiba Dachi
    00:23 Correct fist, shoulder, and elbow posture
    01:08 360 degree-exercise for improved balance
    01:33 Wrist turn versus forearm turn
    02:17 Turning fist and forearm later
    02:56 Participants punch on command
    03:26 Same-time Gyaku Zuki and step-change exercise (intro)
    04:25 Changing feet on the place (Kiri Kaeshi / Hiki komi)
    04:50 Changing feet demo with students
    05:30 Some words about Sanchin and finding the zone
    05:58 Kumite Gyaku Zuki (center vs off-center hit)
    07:17 Hit before the foot lands
    Actually, many more details and points about this subject were covered during this seminar (in July 2016). This video is intended to give only a small taste of it. If it raised your interest, we highly recommend that you attend one of André Bertel's seminars (once Covid 19 is over, of course). Alternatively, book a one-on-one private session with Bertel in Japan.

    I like the points about bringing the shoulder just a bit forward to engage the latissimus dorsi and the turning of the forearm as opposed to turning the wrist. I made these adjustments a while ago and feel that they improved my punches a lot.

    • @johnbulcaster7464
      @johnbulcaster7464 2 года назад +3

      The Latissmus dorsi has nothing to do with throwing a punch. It is for pulling not punching....Hey I still like Bertel he's just wrong on this one

    • @honigdachs.
      @honigdachs. 2 года назад +7

      @@johnbulcaster7464 The lat does have a lot to do with punches. The thing with most modern karate styles is that they have no real idea of punching because they never hit bags and never try to drop anyone. Shotokan is particularly guilty of this.
      The lat stabilizes the punch for the drive-through when you hit the target and gives the punch a lot of its strength especially when you don't have the space to stand in a super-long, wide stance, which karate people comically assume is always the case.
      I realized this when I switched from Shotokan to an okinawa Goju Style where sparring is full contact and they don't subscribe to the idea of learning how to punch by hitting the air exclusively. This is something the modernized styles definitely need to work on.

      It gives your whole arm more stability actually but your right not power , just like the base of a crane functioning as a strong base for the cran arm \ bull doxer/ excavator etc.

      @mairena2000 Год назад

      @@honigdachs.I disagree with you grasshopper, the last have absolutely nothing to do with the power of the punch. Legs, hips, and shoulders do. Lats are good for judo or Jiu Jitsu however. OSS!!

    Very good video, respect to Sensei Bertel. Shotokan Karate's classical chudan level straight punches are a little bit too difficult to master IMO. One sugggestion, taking some boxing lessons with a good Boxing Coach would help to develop more power and speed for Karate punches. At least it worked for me. Thank you again for this awesome video. This is the problem with most shotokan school they focus too much on perfer form.. This is just dry land swimming the technic needs to be put into kumite the way the kyokushin practitioners do full contact sparring. In shotokan the sensei is always stressing this point and that point about a particular technic.. to much explaining and looking good. Most black belts holders don't know how to fight with all those explanations in most dojos.they need to get in the water and swim and stop been too theoritical.
    Another thing is many schools always want to follow the japanese senseis about this and that.. There many westerners who are good in shotokan than the japanese themsevles...

      I'm a shotokan yondan from São Paulo and I agree with you. Technique is only as correct as it works in fighting, with contact. Martial arts tend to fall into the mistake of "overthinking", losing themselves in thechnical mazes, specially when they lack the simple habit of free sparring with contact.
