Usually in stereo, but not always, during the drum set up you may use the panning to place drums and plates in the center, left or right of the stereo field.
I don't think so, Roland r8 was discontinued in 1996, whereas Alesis sr-16 is still on production. It does have quite a few different snare drums sounds, but not sure about that one.Thanks.
