When I saw allegiance last fall I cried as soon as she came on stage. Besides the fact that we all grew up with her beautiful voice she has this presence on stage like no other it's almost overwhelming in such a small theater. It could have been just me being absolutely star struck but I didn't feel this way when I saw Daniel Radcliffe or lance bass on Broadway lol so it's definitely her and her amazing voice and presence I hope she is at least nominated for this role because she was magical!!
My eyes watery when I saw her thank the audience with grace n stars in her eyes after The Sweetney Todd show. I wanted to say, it should be us who should thank her for sharing the talent with us :) Not just star struck hahaha, maybe me too? But, there's something in her voice and eyes (not just a good voice) that strikes people. She just came out and lit the stage..... so grateful to have watched a live show of hers in Dec 19, before Covid and all happened.
2:41 she literally used her entire upper body for that deep breath she had to take in order to sustain that long ass note that was about to come out of her mouth! She is such a technical goddess and a living legend in her own right!
It's a very competitive year for that category, and sadly ALLEGIANCE didn't get a single nomination, I think (please, anyone, correct me if that's wrong). I don't get to see any of the shows, so can't judge anything beyond what can be gleaned from recordings, videos, TV appearances, reading, and hearing other peoples' reports and opinions. I was very sad for this show to have so little success, and would love to see a production of it.
I don't know how people cannot fall in love with this song. First heard it, I found it charming, then listened to it a few more times...just grew in me. It's poignant yet positive. The way Lea sang it brought new meaning every time I listened to it. Her phrasing of each words are deliberate.
I think Allegiance’s composers rearranged this song when they heard that THE Lea Salonga is casted. This was recreated specifically to match Lea’s musical dynamics. It fits her her so well.
I just saw this musical and Lea Salonga was FANTASTIC! I can't believe that I got the chance to see a real legend live on a broadway stage! Allegiance is worth seeing. So go see it!
2 decade has gone by and its Amazing she still have that youthful & angelic voice that the whole world fell in love it. with that voice and a little touch of make up here & there, she can still audition for kim and make the other kim wannabe's run for their money.
As someone who’s half filipino, I was raised on Lea. My mom said she saw her perform in the Philippines when she was younger and they made eye contact. Apart from Lea’s exceptional acting, her technique is pretty damn impeccable. And the fact that she has maintained her vocal integrity all these years??? Legend shit
Even though my attention gets diverted towards the more popular "queens of Broadway," I always end up coming back to Miss Lea, and always end up absolutely awestruck. Her performance as Fantine had me fall in love with her the first time, and here I am again. Absolutely in love.
AMAZING!!! Lea's performance is worthy of a Tony. She deserves a Tony not because of her execution, nor her excellent technique, but imagine Lea at age 20, in 1991, winning her first Tony, & now at age 44, Lea continues to push the boundaries in musical-theater-excellence. Lea should definitely be nominated for her current role in Allegiance, rather, a Tony should be awarded to this amazing performer who has from age 20 to 44, continues to share with the world, many musical performances which has touched so many...from her stellar voice.

The beauty of this song is in its simplicity, sung in an emotional, beautiful and powerful way by Lea. As good as this clip is, seeing it live is much, much better, especially after witnessing what the character goes through before this moment. I've seen the show three times. Each time the audience's response was rapturous!
They made this show with her in mind and they expect a Tony... But it doesnt seem to be beautiful song... It just doesnt stick or move... We can see how LEA is such a great singer/actress. But the song is no LES MISERABLES OR MISS SAIGON piece...
+marc benjamin I actually agree on this. I've watched her sing this live in her concert two years ago (Playlist @ PICC, Manila) and it didn't stick to me as much as the other songs she sang that night. Although what's interesting is that when I found the song on Spotify and listened to it again after a long time, that's the time that I actually started to appreciated it. Then I realized that some parts of the lyrics, like the "push me, pretty please", kinda feels off for me. I guess it's one of those songs that doesn't give you a bang the first time you hear it, but you get to appreciate it over time (unlike when I first Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon on a random CD that I found at home when I was younger). I mean we all agree here that Lea Salonga is one of the best talents out there, and I'm a huge fan myself, and the musicality of the song is really good, but I guess the bottom line, at least for me, is that the lyrics could be catchier. Or maybe it's just me, since I've been listening to a lot of Jason Robert Brown (Last Five Years, Songs for a New World) songs these past few weeks.
I watch it again, and yes Lea is still perfection. But the song is too corny. Lea is great, but give her a song like Frozen's Let it go, let it go, let it go go, sago. Then I'd rather be tied on a chair and made to listen to Anne Curtis singing a Celine Dion medley for 48 hours.
Vermilo Montes You just want to say that you appreciate high culture, perhaps because you are rich. You can't even COMPREHEND the spirit of what I posted. It only proves one thing, you may be able to afford the tickets to some theatrical production but genuine appreciation of the arts is not something that money can buy. Try Harder Vermilo, just because you have money for theater, it doesnt mean you know more about musicals than someone from the Sierra Madres where the hills are alive with the sound of music.
Been listening to this song since the soundtrack of the musical was released. And seeing Lea perform it onstage, my gahd I did not think it's possible to love it even more. But I do. Now. Unimaginable. Superb. Worthy of another Tony!
She just always makes me smile sweetly and in admiration whenever I see and hear her sing. I will never ever get enough of her clear lovely voice! With her incomparable talen, I am loving her more!💖💖💖💖💖
Ms.Lea congratulations! She is the only Princess Disney ever...Noone can replace her. Amazing!I can't get over. I was still floating in the air.Wow!wow!wow!
She has great control. This entire song is over a sopranos passagio (maybe she's an alto but I see her more as a sop) and is really hard to sound so in tune. I'm impressed
Lea is just amazing! Every aspiring singer, particularly the kids, should follow her to learn the proper way of singing -- where to get the voice. High notes yet you do not hear any shrills. It is sweet and nice to listen to!
can't help playing this song over and over again. i watched allegiance and everyone in the cast was superb A1. lea's presence in the show made it even better..lea as always was excellent!
I saw her in the original Broadway Miss Saigon. I came the next day too. When she came to my hometown Chicago with show, I went 2 more times. Does that tell what I think of her?

There once was a little girl playing on a swing set That her grandpa built by the sycamore tree near the rusty farmyard gate While her mama pinned the laundry the little girl would cry out loud "Push me higher, push me higher, push me I can't wait" Her mama would push a couple times but there was laundry still to do So she learned to use her own strength, pull her own weight, push on through To swing higher, higher than before Higher, but afraid to reach for something more Higher, higher towards the sky Until the day she bent to kiss her mama a last goodbye There once was a little boy who rode that swing set He had a licorice twist from the store in town and two knobby skinned-up knees While his sister pin the laundry, the little boy would cry out loud, "Push me higher, push me higher, push me, pretty please!" The girl would push a couple times but there was laundry still to do Then she watched, amazed, as that little boy simply pulled his own weight through To swing higher, higher than she dared Higher, how he swings so high and not be scared? this is amazinggg though She's sung this song like a million times she still be able to keep the magical alive....even tho I feel like she forced herself to stand still and it seems to bring a difficulty to her at these high notes at end of the song...
Would like to quote Miss Lea Salonga when she was a child like at the age of 9 years old with firmness & confidence she said , "the essence of my existence is perfection." Indeed, she claimed it & made it!!!!!!!
a song just for her... her leading lady song... for someone to 'create" a song just for you is really "SOMETHING"... thats LEA SALONGA... a song made just for her...

Would like to quote Miss Lea Salonga when she was a child like at the age of 9 years old with firmness & confidence she said , "the essence of my existence is perfection." Indeed, she claimed it & made it!!!!!!!
