a reason why this sounds so much like michael jackson/thriller is because quincy jones produced thriller and helped abel on this too! sounds awesome to me
This album is very coherent and I love it. Can't wait to listen more. I used to be on the side of "give us more Trilogy!" but i've changed my opinion as a 31 year old well-established millionaire singing about being a homeless, drug/sex addicted demon would be a little strange. I very much appreciate him catering to different styles of music through his discography.
I hate how everyone has been setting The Weeknd to his House of Balloon standards. People gotta learn to appreciate and understand new concepts in music EDIT: when I say new concept, I mean the message and theme of the album being something new (the afterlife/purgatory). I understand 80s pop isn’t new
People really want 30yo abel who's in his sugar daddy dancing vibes to release the same shit he released when he was a 20yo homeless drug addict ... dumb shit
@@abelsanchez2070 not necessarily new concepts, I worded that wrong. I meant more so the overall message of the afterlife. It’s so much different from his previous work
if you listen to the album from start to finish no pausing no skipping, its a whole other worldly music experience. its like your listening to a movie, but you have to visualize what happens
They are the worst part of the album imo. Wayne’s voice sounded weird on the beat and that was the worst feature I’ve ever heard from Tyler. He contradicts himself lyrically, it doesn’t add anything to the theme of the song, and Tyler keeps using that same flow and delivery it’s kinda getting old for me
honestly the tyler verse was my least favorite of this whole album. he sounded different in like a deeper way but i feel his tone of voice and flow was not synchronizing well with the beat of the song. listened to it more than 20 times now really trying to like it but I just can’t get into it, maybe one day tho. ALSO, this is my OPINION people, please stop getting so hurt 😭
Turns out a singer heavily associated with drugs and toxic relationships and the most over the top eccentric comedian of the 90s was the combo needed to make me completely re-evaluate my life on a Thursday night
To those who don't initially like it, this album is gonna be like WLR when it first dropped vs now. I find people tend to be distraught when an artist tries something new but after getting used to it then it becomes amazing. If an artist spit out identical copies of their older music then they would go stale because it's always the same. Change can be uncomfortable but once accepted you look back and wonder why you ever were apprehensive about it
Most of the tracks sound exactly the same.. and it feels like he saw the insane success of ‘blinding lights’ and just made a bunch of tracks with similarities to it. But shoutout Jim Carey he gave me goosebumps
@@Mucgamon191 I don't know where you see the Blinding Lights similarities. I personally think the tracks on this album are much more realised and layered than Blinding Lights. Plus, songs like Less Than Zero have no similarity to it whatsoever.
This album feels like a movie to me, the transitions from song to song is immaculate. I thoroughly enjoyed the album might be my all time favorite along side kissland
Bro Take My Breath was elevated in this album. It was honestly better than the single release. I know there are people who don't like it as much as I do, but those synths and radio transitions just do it for me. They mixed this so well and the songs fit the albums theme. It really feels like I'm listening to 80s radio hits in middle of the night while driving with nowhere to go.
My belief about the cover is that he is showing himself in a state of near death - as if to say that the next album is to be him re-incarnated as a changed young man. Hence the name of the album, "dawn", following the night, "after hours". I think the next album will be more upbeat and vibrant in aesthetics - so he made this album to be what is essentially the middle-point of a transition from night, to day - aka, dark, to light. That's why this album wasn't completely fun or fast, as it tried to capture the feeling of morning, and just waking up. Dawn FM is the album that we had to have in order for the next one to happen.
What I love the most about Shaun Cee is his ability to instantly pick up the theme and message of a track right after it finishes, e.g. “here we go again”, and then articulating it to us - the audience- which gives greater appreciation for the track (and album as a whole ).
I think a lot of the mixed reception I’m seeing comes from comparing this to After Hours along with it being the biggest departure from his trademark style to date. With time hopefully people will enjoy this more and more as it forms its own identify in Abel’s discog. Personally, I def prefer after hours, but I’m loving dawn FM more each listen, It has a great concept. Is There Somebody Else? followed by Starry Eyes is crazzzzzzy.
To me After Hours and every one of his projects - - has had an amazing blend of 80s Synth pop and alternative RnB this is just Synth Pop on every track which sort of wears you down after a while.. by no means a bad album - just mid. Could’ve used more RnB to space it all out. Cos it got kind of boring after a while.
I think my biggest issue with this album is I feel like he should've waited a few more months to drop the album or keep working on it. Also feel like he shouldn't had directly stayed in the 80s style for the entire album. Some of the songs needed a trap beat towards the end of them to switch it up. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant and sexy album but I feel like it should've stayed in the oven just a little bit longer! You know
First impression I wasn’t really feeling it, but once I get the fact I got disappointed because of hype, it might grow on me. Imo I think it was a more sci fyi Tory lanes album (more meaningful tho)

@@alexfvcruz mate Tyler did Igor and got an award for it, Tyler knows how to do pop he just doesn't do it all the time, he'll that was Tyler's first ever pop album
Basically how I feel from this... At the end of After Hours he committed suicide. Dawn FM is him in Limbo. The next album should be called After Life which is him in heaven or hell.
I actually really liked Wayne’s feature. He doesn’t feel out of place to me at all. His flow is fantastic and I love his lyricism in the verse. It’s not like the listener doesn’t know he’s coming, he’s literally listed on the album, he isn’t a hidden feature. So I don’t see how he’s out of place. For me he seems to be another voice displaying their same displeasure for a lover that has moved on to another man. Like 2 men with the same fucked up story coming together to share their thoughts with each other.
In the last song of the album “Less than Zero” Abel takes all the synths away and finishes the track singing over an acoustic guitar. That might’ve been the first time in the whole album that we don’t hear a synth or electronic instrument. Maybe it’s a hint at the direction of his next project?

Flow of this album is so good. Stopping and starting has to effect your dissection of the album. Transitions between songs are so fire and the production top notch!
In some ways, it's unbelievable that this is the same guy that made House of Balloons. But in other ways -- especially lyrically -- it makes perfect sense.
I just need that one song he teased us with when announcing The After Hours til Dawn stadium tour. The one where he sings "you know I love it when you're angry"
The “accent” on gasoline actually isn’t a accent but more so a tribute to 80s pop groups like fears of tears, Depeche Mode, etc. If you aren’t familiar with 80s pop (not 80s Motown) that song won’t hit like it should but if you are than most likely that will be a top favorite on the album
real shit, while there was a massive influx of amazing synthpop revivalists that are lesser known that I'm already satisfied with (magdalena bay, mr kitty, george clanton, post-tnp kkb) i feel that a lot of artists in the mainstream only know about that sound through shit like stranger things and some synthwave acts. you could really tell that Abel fucks with OMiTD and Depeche Mode as he typically does with MJ and Daft Punk in this album.
As a huge fan of The Weekend, First time I heard the album was insane. I found some strange things was going on but I like how weird it was. This Album needs more than 3 or 4 times of listening just to have the pure experience and enjoy the details of it. deserved 8/10 for me 🔥

So not too sure if this is right but from my interpretation this album follows right after After Hours, either Until I Bleed Out from standard edition or Final Lullaby from deluxe (both work for this narrative). I feel like Abel (at least the red suited character from After Hours) dies on either of those tracks and ends up in purgatory which is where Dawn FM takes place. Dawn FM is the station that is played for everyone in purgatory. The only way to proceed to heaven is as Jim Carrey says, "You gotta be heaven to see heaven". For Abel's case he has so much pain and regret from his life on Earth that he isn't able to proceed to heaven. My guess is the old Abel is him aging while in purgatory and the music from this album is him stuck in that headspace where he tells the tale of this girl and him from his life on Earth.
I think you took the titles of both songs too literally - - Until I Bleed Out was about repeating the same mistakes till it kills him (drugs, heartbreak) it’s a cycle that was gonna lead to his downfall, and final lullaby was about putting a relationship to rest.. Dawn is himself growing old and learning from those mistakes and visiting his younger self. His younger self is mortified by what he has become - and kills his older self in defiance of what yet is to come. His older self is mortified by the self destructive life he was living once. But it’s all different takes on it - and that’s mine.
what also supports your theory is that the album actually loops itself, so him growing old in the purgatory, listening to this album over and over, is totally possible.
Gasoline always reminded me of the 80's song, "The Promise," by When In Rome. It goes, "I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say, I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be. But if you wait around awhile I'll make you fall for me, I promise you, I promise you I will!"
Sacrifice following Take My Breath is one of my favourite combos in an album in a while. This and An Evening With Silk Sonic got me wanting to get coked up and moonwalk my life away

Well said. I could not agree more.
Gotta be Able to evolve and grow, and that’s what he always does 🙌🏾

I hate how everyone has been setting The Weeknd to his House of Balloon standards. People gotta learn to appreciate and understand new concepts in music
EDIT: when I say new concept, I mean the message and theme of the album being something new (the afterlife/purgatory). I understand 80s pop isn’t new
People really want 30yo abel who's in his sugar daddy dancing vibes to release the same shit he released when he was a 20yo homeless drug addict ... dumb shit
@@abc-ov5jm Unbeliavable lol

Yeah but objectively the music was better back then, I still love the new sound tho it’s vibes only
@@abelsanchez2070 not necessarily new concepts, I worded that wrong. I meant more so the overall message of the afterlife. It’s so much different from his previous work

Loved the Tyler and Wayne verses. They don't steal the show but they are quality and stand out due to lack of features
They're both great and exactly what they needed to be
They are the worst part of the album imo. Wayne’s voice sounded weird on the beat and that was the worst feature I’ve ever heard from Tyler. He contradicts himself lyrically, it doesn’t add anything to the theme of the song, and Tyler keeps using that same flow and delivery it’s kinda getting old for me
@@zclan4130 worst feature from tyler? imma respect yo opinion 😂
@@zclan4130
No I honestly agree. Lil Wayne ruined the verse and tbh I’m not the biggest fan of Tyler so his verse wasn’t really IT for me.
honestly the tyler verse was my least favorite of this whole album. he sounded different in like a deeper way but i feel his tone of voice and flow was not synchronizing well with the beat of the song. listened to it more than 20 times now really trying to like it but I just can’t get into it, maybe one day tho. ALSO, this is my OPINION people, please stop getting so hurt 😭
Jim Carey spitting bars on the outro
Turns out a singer heavily associated with drugs and toxic relationships and the most over the top eccentric comedian of the 90s was the combo needed to make me completely re-evaluate my life on a Thursday night
Waiting for the Jim Carrey remix for a "Magic Oneohtrix Point Never" track now.
Out of Time is absolutely beautiful .
To those who don't initially like it, this album is gonna be like WLR when it first dropped vs now. I find people tend to be distraught when an artist tries something new but after getting used to it then it becomes amazing. If an artist spit out identical copies of their older music then they would go stale because it's always the same. Change can be uncomfortable but once accepted you look back and wonder why you ever were apprehensive about it
I wouldn't say this sound is very new for the weeknd
WLR still sucks lol
Most of the tracks sound exactly the same.. and it feels like he saw the insane success of ‘blinding lights’ and just made a bunch of tracks with similarities to it. But shoutout Jim Carey he gave me goosebumps
@@Mucgamon191 I don't know where you see the Blinding Lights similarities. I personally think the tracks on this album are much more realised and layered than Blinding Lights. Plus, songs like Less Than Zero have no similarity to it whatsoever.

Bro Take My Breath was elevated in this album. It was honestly better than the single release. I know there are people who don't like it as much as I do, but those synths and radio transitions just do it for me. They mixed this so well and the songs fit the albums theme.
It really feels like I'm listening to 80s radio hits in middle of the night while driving with nowhere to go.
glad to see Gasoline getting so much love in the comments, definitely not the easiest weeknd listen but it's so addictive
Sacrifice is so elite it’s like he’s playing Michael and added himself as a feature
@@firstlast9846 finally someone with my thoughts 💭
The cover art pisses me off
@@firstlast9846 I appreciate you for actually breaking down why you don’t like the album instead of just calling it mid.
You know
Everyone jumping on it calling it “MID” or “INSTANT CLASSIC” let it breathe… it just came out

The concept of being in between life and afterlife is so insane
The “accent” on gasoline actually isn’t a accent but more so a tribute to 80s pop groups like fears of tears, Depeche Mode, etc. If you aren’t familiar with 80s pop (not 80s Motown) that song won’t hit like it should but if you are than most likely that will be a top favorite on the album

@@firstlast9846 Yea I'm definitely interested to see what everyone else thinks. I like this take as well!
what also supports your theory is that the album actually loops itself, so him growing old in the purgatory, listening to this album over and over, is totally possible.
