I played the first half of the story on hard mode then I just switched it to medium because I was getting my ass beat and I just wanted to enjoy the story instead of sweating every time I fight💀

Participants died in the previous timeline during the tournament however liu kang has restarted the timeline so he technically didn’t die if nobody has died during a tournament. Liu kang has knowledge of the previous timeline but he wasn’t the protector of earthrealm. He became keeper of time after defeating Shang tsung in mk11 and made his own universe from the very beginning.
basically dontai, in mk11 liu kang became the protector of earthrealm & raiden gave him his powers so after beating kronika he became the keeper of time then reset the entire MK timeline but instead of raiden as its protector its liu kang. Thats why everybody is just meeting each other, which another reason is why sub zero & scorpion are best buds for this one

Idk if anyones explained it or if youll read this but this game is essentially a reboot. Aspects from Mortal Kombat 9 to Mortal Kombat 11's story do carry over so you might get confused later on in the story mode. Its a reboot solely because of the ending of Mortal Kombat 11 where Liu Kang reset everything.
