- Merle Haggard sings "Natural High" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

I knew when Merle canceled his apperance at Strawberry Festival about a month ago in Plant city that he was sick. Merle stayed out on the road to the end. He was the balladeer for the working man. We will all miss you my friend.

My sons and I were there!! We sat on the sidewalk all night to get a good spot. My sons were 13 and 14 hrs old and they loved it! My sons got to talk with Neil Young! Was so glad to be there and many other FARM Aids after! God bless you Merle..met with you last Oct in Milwaukee along with Willie!! God rest your soul..I am so sad we lost you.....
