Sonos Sub Mini review: The practical sub we’ve been waiting for

  • Finally, Sonos has a subwoofer that's more affordable and practical for smaller spaces, the Sub Mini. It only took 10 years to get here. Sonos' original wireless Sub, which debuted in 2012, has always been targeted at its most hardcore users. With a launch price of $699, it was just as expensive as the company's flagship Playbar, and its enormous size made it overkill for apartments. (It's now $50 more after Sonos' recent price hikes.)
    Casual Sonos fans were basically out of luck, especially as the company released more affordable soundbars, like the Beam and Ray. You probably wouldn't want to pair a $699 subwoofer with a speaker that costs $400 or less. Simply put, the $429 Sub Mini fills a huge gap in Sonos's lineup. But is it actually any good?
    Pros: Excellent bass for its size, Small and easy to move, Relatively affordable, Syncs with Sonos wired speakers easily.
    Cons: Doesn’t support the Sonos Move.

    Thanks for the review. Seems like just what I’m looking for. The existing sub always seemed too big and unpractical for me…I’d like some beefier bass, but it’s not like I needed to fill a movie theater. This seems like just the right amount at a better price point.

      Yeah people keep brushing this off with the arc because it’s cheaper but I do not want a big ass sub. I live in an apartment I’m never going to utilize the huge bass I’m sure it produced. If I bought the big sub I’d probably never have it off 10-20% volume and at that low volume I would bet the sub mini probably sounds just about the same for half the price

    Didnt really go into detail about what it does for sonos beam sound bar. I makes that clarity on the soundbar better by taking away the low end bass requirment, and free up the space for it working on id and high range and dialouge. aside from that, the review was fine.

      I have the full sonos sub, and chances are good that if your soundbar volume is low enough for your neighbors not to hear, the bass in the sub mini should follow. You can also turn it down independently to what you find appropriate.

      You might have to factor in room size, audio sources (TV stereo, Atmos, 5.1, etc), placement, settings, and true play tuning. The good thing about the Gen 3 sub is you adjust sub output to your liking for almost any room size AND add a second sub if you want. I see the mini less capable of filling the Gen 3 sub shoes and limited to small to med size rooms w/ or w/o surrounds. I tried the sub mini in my 17 feet X 20 feet master bedroom with Gen 1 Beam+two Symfonisk bookshelf speakers and it didn't fill the room with improved bass compared to the Gen 3 Sub.

      If your TV has Arc/eArc, I'll say go for both the sub mini and rear speakers. I started out with IKEA Symfonisk bookshelf rears and they have a lot styles and an affordable budget for excellent sounding speakers (bookshelf, lamps, hanging wall art speakers).

      Bass-wise not as significantly since both the 5s and the Arc go pretty low in terms of frequency range, but it could improve the clarity of the other speakers since they can have the Sub Mini manage the bass. If I were you I'd get a refurbished Sub, would be more bang for your buck :)

      Depends on the room size size w/ or w/o rear surrounds and if you want to upgrade to a dual sub set-up down the road. Small to medium room with neighbors a wall over would be fine for the sub mini. I would go for the rear surrounds and Gen 3 sub if you have no neighbors in a medium to large room.

    • @mrgold3591
      @mrgold3591 Год назад

      You can mix/match any Sonos speaker at a touch of a button in the Sonos app. The Beam+sub with the Move added in a group will not be in a 5.1 home theater configuration. The Move will be more like a whole house audio configuration with the Move in the same room. Depending on the Move placement and sound bouncing off surfaces, you might get some slight echoing effect. You might have to keep the Move as close to your listening position to reduce that.

      I have the same set-up with Gen 1 Beam and two rear One SLs in my Office. I added the Gen 3 Sub and there was a very noticeable improvement in bass, mid-range, and overall sound richness. I have a Gen 1 Beam and two Symfonisk bookshelf speakers as rears in the master bedroom. I figured the sub mini would be good enough for mostly before bed TV watching. Adding the mini didn't seem to add the same level of instant improvement compared to the Gen 3 Sub. Ended up sending the mini back and replaced with a Gen 3 Sub.
