  • Shirley Turner was never able to handle a breakup. When Andrew Bagby told her it was over, she decided that her best option was to kill him, but that wasn't the end of the story. After she found out she was pregnant with Andrew's child, things would get so much worse.

So you'd rather them be like the US and just keep everyone locked up for months or even years waiting on a trial where there might be little to no evidence to find them guilty? I promise you that you don't. People here lose their jobs, their homes, their kids sometimes because they can't afford bail or because some investigator decided 5 minutes in that they think they did it. Sometimes there's no evidence to support this or even plenty of evidence that the person did NOT commit the crime and/or it points very strongly to someone else. Yet they get held anyway. What happened in this case was a relative rarity- almost no one who is in the middle of arguing extradition does what this crazy bitch did. However the circumstances I described in the US? Happens ALL THE TIME. You have to decide whether you want laws and procedure that might possibly allow a criminal to do something awful while waiting to be tried or laws and procedures that 100% positively keep innocent people locked away and ruin their lives waiting to be tried- and that second one can happen to anyone. You aren't safe because you're a woman or educated or have no criminal record or volunteer to spoon feed elderly people.

I usually have compassion for people and their mental health, but this woman aside from being sick KNEW EXACTLY WHAT SHE WAS DOING, and I can't find within me to feel any compassion for her. so many opportunities to leave this child in someone else's care, her thought process of strapping her child and jumping to their death, is sickening.

Except that in the eyes of the law, she had so far done nothing wrong. I'm sorry that you don't actually believe people are innocent until proven guilty but that's your personal opinion. Judges make decisions based on the facts given and in the vast majority of cases, decisions like these keep people who don't deserve to be incarcerated out of prison while the rest of bureaucracy takes its sweet ass time. Being a crazy asshole isn't illegal- if it was we'd have at least a 50% higher incarcerated rate. And judges are paid to make decisions based on what is given to them by the state/lawyers, not to see the future. Of course no one is happy at the outcome of this case but it sounds like you'd prefer they change the laws and just keep everyone locked up simply because they're connected to the case somehow or some prosecutor believes they like them for that crime. These laws are already abused and plenty of innocent people ARE incarcerated for months, even years, awaiting trial only for the state to have nothing of substance to convict them on. And you've seen as many times as I have how often "detectives" foorm their opinion within minutes or hours and then spend their "investigation" period finding only what fits their theory and ignoring, sometimes even deliberately hiding, any evidence that does not.

What Shirley did was the ultimate form of control and getting back at someone. If I can't have them, neither can you. She knew this was going to kill those grand parents, losing their son, and then their grandson too, disgusting. The Canadian legal system is completely at fault here. They should have kept her in jail until her trial. She was proven to be a bad mother, and yet they handed over an innocent child to her, so sad, and what happened to that innocent baby was 100% preventable.

We each have an opportunity to leave the world a better place before we go. Most of us never do. Zachary, in 13 months of his difficult life, punctuated with the profound love he shared with his grandparents, made the world a better and safer place for future children of violent parents. You have my gratitude for that dear Zachary. The same can be said for his grandparents, who negotiated with the murderer of their son to be there for their grandson. They were cheated badly out of what should have been a lifetime of fulfilling parenting, but took their experience and made a legacy. While it is devastatingly tragic, it is a beautiful love story. Never forget, we are on this planet for the blink of an eye in time. Whether 1 year, or 100 it is not really that much different, it is still the blink of an eye. There isn't. This is a cruel, vicious, and unfair world. And, that's it. There's going to be many times innocent people suffer, and evil people triumph, as is the case here. There's no divine justice, no great equalizer after we die.
I actually take comfort in that. I was raised religious, that is to say indoctrinated from birth as most children are because adults abuse a child's inherent trust in their parents to do so, and constantly terrified of going to hell for things that are perfectly normal and natural. I don't live in fear anymore, and I don't judge others for being born a certain way as the majority of religious people do. But I also understand that life is very harsh, people are extremely flawed, and the bad guys often prevail.
If you do believe in god, then he must be rather apathetic to human suffering, for he never seems to intervene to stop said suffering, although he very easily could. And if you believe he is omniscient, then that apathy becomes outright malice. Your god sees innocent children suffer immeasurably, watches trafficking rings operate and natural disasters inflict unspeakable horrors, and does nothing. So either god is himself evil, or more likely, god does not exist.
I'm sorry for ranting, I'm rather sleep deprived and I tend to prattle on in this state 😅 But my point is, I dearly hope you try to make peace with things as they are, rather than how you wish they could be. I wish you the best.

This case crippled me. I am watching on RUclips on my iPad. I use Apple ear buds so I can still hear when I need to to another room momentarily. In this case, I went into the kitchen thinking how wonderful this would turn out w/Zachary being with his grandparents. As I was stirring some rice, I heard Jiles say what happened to Zachary. I gasped and my mouth fell opened. I was not expecting that. Tears abound.
What a monster she turned out to be. 😡 How could someone end her son’s AND Zachary’s father lives. 😢 Hate is a strong word, but hatred is what I feel towards this ultimate MONSTER 🤬 God bless angel Zach and his father. I am going to look up the “Dear Zachary” film. Thanks for the upload, Jiles. So heartbreaking. 😢

She has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, and apparently also the right not to be extradited so she can go to trial and be found guilty... Good grief. 🤬

From personal experience due to seeing a family I grew up with lose thier son horrifically in the Greyhound beheading I can attest to how absolutely pathetic our Canadian justice system is. It favors the "rights" of the criminal instead of caring for the victims and it's just so messed up because if you can commit a heinous crime such as murder you don't deserve those rights in my opinion. May that sweet baby and Andrew rest in peace ❤

I agree. I was shocked to learn that Li was released so quickly. The details of his savage crime are beyond shocking. Last we heard he's still safely ensconced in Manitoba under a new name, Will Lee Baker, living free while Tim's family/friends, and the witnesses, have to live with the monstrous brutality and trauma everyday. It was actually scary riding a Greyhound after that.

That case haunts me. Guy was just riding a bus like like he had before, like millions of people do every day. And then he was murdered by a guy who happened to be on the same one.

I love your podcasts and every video you post! So well done and you are very likable. Keep them coming!
Just a note- in Canada, you don’t “take out” any of those refunds or cheques (you called them baby bonuses), they are automatically sent to you. You have to have filed taxes and meet the qualifications, but if you have done that, they will automatically be sent. She wouldn’t have had to do it under certain “pretenses”, anyone that has a child under a certain age, receives them. You get a certain amount for each child. There are certain ones that you cannot make over a certain amount a year, and still receive them, but they do the calculations from your filed taxes. Just thought you’d like to know.

I’m not sure if this is the season for this kind of case, but have you ever thought of doing an episode covering the Dnepropetrovosk Maniacs? Viktor Sayenco, and Igor Suprunyuk?
The story regarding these 2 men is one of the most outlandish and abhorrent cases I have ever come across. In less than a month, the duo viscously attacked 21 people killing 19 selecting their targets at random. The two killers are serving life imprisonment while an accomplice of theirs served 9 years.
You are hands down my favorite true crime channel, and your videos are the greatest thing to listen to on a long drive.

So the Canadian courts give someone who happens to be hosting a group of cells that have the potential to become a baby more rights than a murdered victim and the victim's family and friends? It didn't even seem that it being the victim's baby played any part in the decision, just that it was any baby! How utterly sickening.
