I find the erase my iPhone feature extremely impractical and foolish at best. If a criminal has stolen your iPhone and turned off the Wi-Fi and mobile data, the iPhone cannot be erased. How on earth is the iPhone supposed to connect to a wifi or network source if it’s in lost mode and locked down. It just makes no sense. It’s as though the device will pending the erase forever.
It's similar when you go to some malls in some country and they offer free Wifi which has to be activated via email...looooooll How do I access the email???
You just disable in face id & passcode the access in control center and Siri and if you lucky to have data then you can delete the data so extremely foolish not to disable access in control panel while the phone is locked
If I had a new iPhone I would make sure to keep it on me 24/7 and never let it leave my pocket unless I know I am safe. I already kind of do this with my older Oneplus 7 Pro. I needed this info because I will be switching to the 13 Pro Max soon.

There is not...and that sucks. I hope one day Apple will create this feature so no one can turn off your phone if they don't have access to your passcode.
My iPhone got stolen so traced it to a house but thief was gone by the time we got there (tracking with find my iPhone) then the next day the thief managed to disable the find my iPhone feature, got notification on my iPad that find my iPhone has been disabled and the iPhone was erased. I think the thieves are able to flash the device with some sort of hacked software. I have the IMEI so will try trace it through the networks. Locked iPhone not as secure or unusable as we assume, so personal recommendation is to keep backup of all your files, my app data is backed up but I've lost all my photos now cause I didn't have enough iCloud storage, will pay for storage in future to at least learn something from this experience

all i got to do is turn off the stolen phone and everything in this video is no longer applicable. sorry.. Thief may not even want your information but just to make life difficult. The best way is just to make sure the phone cannot be turn off by unauthorised users which idk why in 2020 is still not available.
with iOS 13 and latest there's an option to find it when its turned off.you enable it in your settings then you're good to go.i watched a video of a guy doing it and it works its unfortunate i knew all this after i lost my phone

The person who stole my phone tried selling it to someone and the person who they were trying to sell it to took it from them and returned it to my work. I was surprised to get it back. But it had been about almost a month and i had given up on it.
I had activation lock and the thieves still were able to get my contacts and who else knows what. They texted my contacts with a link to submit my iCloud password and were even using my carrier to make long distance calls 🤦♀️
Don't assume that everyone who finds a phone is a thief. I found an iphone where I work. It was on the street. No one wanted not be labeled a thief, so no one bothered to pick it up. My coworker told me to leave it alone because I was going to be accused as a thief. I left it where it was. The next week I saw that the phone was smashed by a vehicle. The glass cracked and one edge was flattened.
Too bad this isn’t true anymore thieves have found ways to essentially hack the iPhone bypassing the activation lock. I recommend if your phone gets stolen to also reach out to your carrier and have them blocked the phone so that the phone cant be activated on other carriers
