  • Part 2 of the DJM 1966 Ford F100 Budget Project details the removal of the factory “Twin I Beam” suspension. Watch as we remove and break down the factory I beams and steering linkage getting ready to install the DJM lowering kit. Removing king pins, spindle and drum brakes, we found the brakes on this truck were previously installed incorrectly and all the bushing were in very poor condition. A normal situation you may find on 50 plus year-old trucks. Follow along at djmsuspension.c...

Do you have to compress the coil spring to remove it or does it drop out of the way when you take the weight off of the suspension?

      James,
When you remove the shock and the travel limiter (if it has one) the spring is unloaded and you don't need a spring compressor. This is, of course, assuming you have the truck properly supported on jack stands, lift, etc. Loosening the radius arm bushings can give more play and help. You can pull the beam down a little more making the spring removal easier.

Drum brakes maybe easier on the budget. But they don't stop for shit.
