I understand where a lot of the other responses are coming from, but let's not forget that a lot of idols signed VERY exploitative contracts at a very young age, are then put in debt throughout their training and may get sued for breaching their contract if they leave due to not wanting to do a concept or the like. It is easier said than done what we'd do in the situation because we're thankfully not in it.

I think sexiness is a great thing when it makes a woman feel empowered. But nothing is sexy about being forced to do something you are not comfortable with.

Yes, I think we can see this in Mamamoo. Hwasa can wear any sexy clothes that she wants and kills it, but Moonbyul never wears revealing clothes and still rocks her own style. Their stylists really appreciate the members' preferences.
honestly it's fine wearing the sexy outfits but if an idol is uncomfortable then that's the problem. sometimes companies force idols to do the sexy concept because that's what sells and some idols are uncomfortable with it, that part is messed up.
It feels more like women are not respected enough in Korea. Those companies are alr known for exploiting many young people's dream of becoming an idol, viewing them as a product to sell more than considering about how they feel or anything. The road to being kpop idol is indeed harsh and not that glamourous which imo is not worth at all. If a company has to push their idols to sexy concept out of desperation that's not gonna work. Esp in stellar case, it got distasteful, they're not willing/comfortable and they got paid badly. I doubt such companies strategies/ways like that, haven't they consider this instead of hurting the idols and their reputation?
Of course they haven't, it's all about the money male or female - also, the vast, vast majority of idols get paid shit if anything at all. There are also plenty of "companies" that set themselves up as idol agencies when really they're just a front to get girls in and use them - Yellow Bee's agency is the most recent/public example of this. Sure, they released songs (if you can call them that given the "budget"), but the girls were basically used to serve drinks and keep investors "happy". Sadly, because things are so bad in Korea, such companies get waves and waves of trainees just trying to escape "Hell Korea" (iirc, just last year it was something like 70-75% of young people want to leave Korea because it's just so bad there). Yellow Bee's company did an entire lineup change of 5 members before really being called out and, unfortunately, they can just close down and pop up another company under a different name and do it again without any consequences.
Sexiness and sexy outfits are great. But if someone is being forced or pressured then that’s a problem. Also fans shouldn’t try to shame anyone for sexy wear.
As long as the idols are fine with the sexy concept and outfits then work it girl. If they are not comfortable and be forced to do it, then that’s NEVER OK

This!! I've been scrolling for a comment like this, but when you talk about it some people call you a hater. Like the idol is obviously uncomfortable, you can see it and then they have to adjust their clothes every few seconds. Especially when they're in short dresses or skirts, overall it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@@aestheticcat8976 because this gen of kpop stans (my opinion) care more about their ideal view of the idol, not the idol’s actual well being. That’s also why idols of opposite gender can’t collaborate together that easily anymore, they always have to be extra careful so they don’t upset the fans
@@ChenBritMi That's so sad. I wish idols could act naturally, talk and laugh with each other without dating rumors or else going on after that. Even when they look at nothing with a blank look, people start shit ...
@@hopeworld3477 ikr!! I saw this video titled “idols with attitude problems” or sth like that, and the creator shitted on the idols even if it was obvious they just looked tired
The kpop industry is so toxic and misogynistic, I highly doubt this will stop. Korea is well known for its very chauvenistic culture afterall. Crazy how Korea is overhyped, and in fact is one of the most backward countries in Asia. A dystopian cruel society and very much imperfect. Koreaboos are dellusional.
Imagine how sad her parents would be when they find out that their dear daughter has to go through all these things🤧They would be the most heartbroken 😥
I I noticed that when you wear revealing outfits or if you have abs in the group and you show them all you get more views you get more fans and get more famous which is really messed up because you should stand in them for talent not body
its what we called standards example beauty standards there are many kpop idols that have talents but not "handsome/attractive" enough and they get hate for that and i agree with you like you said they should support them for their talents not their body or face but we cant change their opinion, but i hate when they send hate like example "hes/shes ugly, hes not that handsome" no one is born ugly remember that someone you dont find attractive is stunning to someone else.
I would also like to point out how fans will like to push an idol, even if they are underage, to do sexy things, whether they are comfortable or not. For example, NCT Jisung. It's disgusting that fans feel entitled to an idol's body like that.
It's so sad how we fight for our rights while there's other women who shame any female that does what they like out of jealousy or prejudices. We are one of our worst enemies.

You can tell when an idol is comfortable with what She's wearing and while doing "sexy" concepts. Hwasa from mamamoo is an example of someone who is comfortable wearing lingerie on stage as she chooses it for herself. It feels empowering and hot because you can feel the aura and fact that She LOVES it. She's in her element. However if you had Moonbyul dress the same as Hwasa it would feel uncomfortable and awkward. Sad. Because we can feel that Moonbyul would be extremely out of her element, isn't her at all and is being exploited for views. There's nothing sexy about exploitation and force. There are MV's and stages that I cannot watch because the women are so obviously uncomfortable and you can feel that they really do not want to be doing this. Sex doesnt sell as much as they think. The groups who have sold the most are those who dont do sexy concepts.
True, I love Mamamoo's stylists because they really shows their personality. I've always been a fan of Moonbyul's girl crush element because I don't like revealing cloth myself but she makes me feel like I can be pretty without revealing my skin, and Hwasa is goddamn gorgeous in every way because I can feel her confidence.
Exactly!!! I also can't watch AOA's music videos or stages. They don't look comfortable or confident while doing their dances, this is why they don't look "sexy". On the other hand, I've always loved the PussyCat Dolls who look extremely confident and therefore sexy while performing!
I get if girl groups wear sexy clothes and feel confident in them. But I'm against forcing them into clothes which they're not comfortable in. Plus I'm scared for their safety because there's so many perves around them who takes videos of their private part and zoom and etc which is super creepy.
I'm a guy so I enjoy seeing beautiful girls. I do feel sorry for some of the overly revealing outfits K-pop idols are forced to wear sometimes. This is a male driven industry and females need to be given more power over decision making when it comes to things like visual concepts.
The thing that I find so sad about the stellar situation is that the girls were pushed into a concept they didn't feel comfortable with but the public made the girls themselves feel guilty for it. Saying things like "they didn't have to go for that sexy concept just to get attention" etc when that was sadly the truth
I wouldn't want them to feel uncomfortable, but I don't have any issues with seeing a sexy concept. Artists like Hyolin, rock the look so well that you can actually feel their confidence!
Stellar? They are really talented, they have cute songs too. Everytime they talked about the topic, they always cry. The entertainment? A total bullshit.
I don't like the sexy outfit thing, I think most of them just look weird, especially if they don't exactly fit the group's vibe or style. Grace, one thing I want to say, you are freaking gorgeous, and I need to know how you do it! How do you maintain it?
I think asian people need to change their mindset in my country people teases me (mainly elders) for wearing shorts its kind of scary and my country (India) is not such a safe country !! But I guess a person can wear whatever the person wants just people watching should change their mindset!!

Stellar was one of my favorite groups, they were so sweet and extremely talented and the company just ruined it for them, no wonder they all left as soon as their contracts expired. I think they even publicly talked about how they hated their marionette outfits but I might be wrong about this. I really miss them, they had so much potential! (In case you're interested in Stellar, Jeon Youl has just released her solo single "Mamacita", please give it a listen ;;) Personally, I like sexy concepts but I think it's sad that idols, and by that I really mean female idols, have to face hate and feel uncomfortable in their outfits. It's easy for companies to play with that shock value but they should care about their idols' wellbeings more. I also draw a big fat line when it comes to underage idols, I don't wanna see some teens shaking their booties in way too short clothing, it's weird and inappropriate!
I remember MOMO using basically an Lingerie at MAMA or some other award ceremony last year, and was a very cold day must have been very uncomfortable for her.
Because of music. They love music. Music is their everything. Singing and dancing (insert: rap, producing songs, writing lyrics etc.) Makes them the happiest. They know what theyre doing. You don't need a reason for something if it's your dream. If it's your dream then its your dream. Even with other jobs. You've gotta give up something just to pursue your dream job. Before youre given the trainee contract You have the right to make your own decision. Whether you'll sign it or not its up to you. Signing the contract might be one of the Biggest decisions you can do or make In your whole life.
i don't mind the sexy concept i actually like it but only if the idols want to do it, it's an messed up situation bc they're uncomfortable doing something they don't want to and i'm uncomfortable knowing they're doing it against their will,, it's just sad to see them being forced to do something that in the end does more harm then good to the them
Paused at 3:17 to comment lol. Personally speaking I believe that there IS a right and wrong when we look at the acceptability of women sexuality in western and eastern culture. In the West there has been a shift from women being sexy in media for the sole purpose of men's satisfaction to it being more about empowering other women and releasing the shame that gets put onto women who are more sexual. The fact that innocence is considered desirable and women's sexuality bad is rooted in a belief system that holds patriarchal standards and keep men in places of power while tearing women down. This idea also directly correlates to victim blaming in sexual assualt cases (ex: she was sexually assaulted because she out late at night in a club wearing dress. If she was at home wearing a onesie this would not have happened), rape culture, higher rates of domestic violence and the overall gender inequality women face. So yes, you're right there is a difference, but I do believe that the eastern concept of women's sexuality is wrong. Not because Asian culture hates women or anything like that, but because society there is still very patriarichal. Not that there hasnt been progress. But there's still a long way to go. One way to combat this is more education and awareness on the topic. So thank you grazy for making this video.
I feel so bad for what Stellar had to go through. Their music is some of my favorite in kpop! I wish their careers would have been more pleasant for them and lasted longer.

@@Beandal because youtubers are role models and alot of people place alot of trust in youtubers and feel they need everything their favorite youtubers have. Especially if the person has "body goals" to them and advertises weight loss products. And especially if their audience is primarily really young like grace does. Plus alot of kpop fans feel like theyre not thin enough anyway because we are constantly looking at young, beautiful and thin people all the time and it pressures alot of us thinking we need something like this to look like them
I absolutelly looove sexy concept when the girls are comfortable with it and are not underage. Like with Hwasa you can see she just owns it and it's so amazing to see. Sadly it's quite hard to tell sometimes if it's the company who pushes it or if the girls are ok with it. I think you can tell by the outfit tho. Like those shorts that are super short and even without the safety-shorts under? That's really uncomfortable to see and you can tell the company really just wants to get popularity from a fancam cause there is really no other reason for not give them safety shorts.
If you are actually OK inside your body, you will project a sexiness regardless of what you are wearing, so GRAZY GRACE - You are absolutely correct in your statement about building confidence in the girls, that confidence will show through, there are many examples of this inside the KPOP Girl Groups, for instance Besty, EXID, 2NE1, BEG etc ---

@k-trash yep, some girls are forced to do that. it’s not even just the kpop industry, it’s the korean industry overall too. look up jang jiyeon. she was sexually and physically abused by men that were in the higher ups and killed herself.
@@02puwina she was actually murdered because her former colleague and a very close friend tried to give her testimony but she couldn't because no one wanted to take her seriously and she was really afraid for her life
I miss these type of videos from you Grace! More relaxed and like a podcast but still informative! Of course i love the mystery ones too! Keep it up queen!!!!
The sad thing is that even if women wear it comfortably and feel empowered and comfortable wearing this style, you can't stop sickos from viewing/abusing disempowering ways. Also for some idols they do this for selling pint, it is not unheard of and even grace has spoken about this before, that companies might get rich people to invest by setting up 'meetings' for endorsement. Consent matters at all levels.
I remember one twice outfit where the skirt was ripped open on the sides and fans thought it was awful, but the idol said it was because she felt like she couldn't dance in it, so the stylist did what they could on such short notice. (paraphrasing but yeah) So I like that at least their stylist listened when they spoke up
I really like your approach here. you are definetly that kind of person who understands both cultures and react to these things very maturly. yes sexiness is openly accepted in western culture but in Asia it is a bit more conservative. I live in between Europe and Asia so in my country we tend to have both(open minded and conservative) worldwiew and I understand you very well. and your delivering both part's point of view is so on point.
Nothing wrong with sexy. I loooove sexy concepts. BUUUUT I do not agree with making the girls do it if they are uncomfortable. What makes a sexy concept amazing is when the girls are confident doing it!
thank you for bringing up Stellar! I'm their fan and i think they did a great job :') it's just so sad when they disbanded 😭😭😭 i love your channel so much! thank you Grace!
No one ever talks about when Dreamcatcher was Minx and they were forced into the cute/sexy concept which many group members highly resented (SiYeon would be the first to admit). They were forced to start their group that way and it didn't work for their image and popularity, so they were rebranded into rock/dark concept which they liked and fit them so much better, each member personally and as a group.
some idols choose to wear sexy looks as a form of self expression, which i fully support. but if idols are forced to wear these kind of outfits just to make their company more money, that is seriously gross and creepy.
I was literally wondering what happen to stellar like I seriously loved them and they was doing something that was clearly “risky” and they’re all talented at the same time. Such a shame how they disbanded and how they wasn’t compensated properly
Yeah I do agree that sexy culture in Asia is a lot more strict then any of the other countries but at the end of the day they did sign those contract which only goes to show that they should've read it more carefully which is a lesson learned always read contracts and negotiate whenever possible if you a say in the matter
I think stellar would be a no one without that concept... the producers are not dummies, it shocked the nation, it worked... I remember when it came out, everyone into kpop knew them. That being said... they shouldnt be forced to do anything they dont want to... but that achieved their dream of fame, even if it was short lived.
Ok so we always hear about girls being uncomfortable in these outfits but I really wanna know if there's any boy idol groups who also feel the same way? sometimes the male idols are forced into this bad boy/sexy concept but I wonder if they're okay with it? I'd love to have a discussion on this.
i think theres a huge difference between a woman confident in her body and sexiness (like hwasa) who's comfortable in revealing outfits versus those who aren't comfortable and forced to dress in something they don't want to. i know i wouldn't be comfortable in a lot of these outfits in front of a crowd, but if a girl can do that with confidence more power to her. it was so heartbreaking to see the stellar members talking about what happened to them, i hope they're all doing better now and can heal from that experience.
I don't think female power has anything to do with sexiness or wearing less . It's all about personality. Your personality gives you respect and power. When you dress modest, people look at your personality not your body. You are more likely to get unwanted male attention when wearing revealing clothes. You are more likely to get objectified , if you wear something that shows your body. It's a fact. No matter how much us women want to change the society, it's us who has to be care full.
I think it should be stated that there is a difference between "sexy" and "sexual" and while I can't say that there is a definitive line in the sand where one becomes the other I do think most Kpop companies especially the medium and up do generally a good job at not crossing that line, in Stella's case they definitely went over the line and explicitly so, it wasn't just the outfits it was the music video. Stellar's Vibrato was a very good song but the music video had so many allusions to a woman's private parts even I was saying out loud, "I get it, it's a woman's genitals!" the lack of anything close to subtlety I found more annoying than titillating to be honest, I don't like being hammered over the head with the obvious at the best of times but that was an example of the worst type of sexual marketing. I also think making minors dress in sexy and revealing clothes should be cracked down on, if they aren't old enough to make legal decisions then they aren't old enough to be doing those types of concepts.
I do kpop dance covers and though I mostly got over it, It's hard to explain why I felt uncomfortable doing even slightly sexy dances. I like what I see in the mirror. My moves are alright. I just kinda feel awkward thinking what people might think who know me, especially family members 😬 and also with clothes, idk why but I can NEVER show my cleavage. I like innocent looks and if I want to look more mature I wear tight clothes or show my legs. But I can NEVER show the cleavage, idk why but I hate it. It's not me. I feel so bad to those girls...
I personally agree with what you said here - if a woman loves being sexy and feels it's her then she should do it. If a girl doesn't then she should be allowed to find something that's more for her. What I really don't like is how in both western and Korean music companies force or pressure girls into being sexy even when they're not comfortable with it just to get attention because "sex sells." People don't really judge on talent anymore it seems and only on how "hot" someone is which is really sad. Also I feel both guys and girls but girls especially are either super "pure" and innocent or super sexy and it seems we forget there's so many other concepts to choose from than just "cute" or "sexy" Again I'm not against sexiness or cuteness, just the fact companies force girls into being sexy and rely on shock just to get attention rather than be creative.

Maybe some know the Song ''Ketsufure'' Which baaically means Twerkijt in japanese 😅 Maybe some of u will enjoy
That's the thing, as long as it's not forced, and not for the male gaze that would make the person performing uncomfortable, it's great! As long as the woman is confidence, and you can easily read it as oozing confidence, it's amazing, and fun! But when it feels forced, and it's so obviously for the male gaze, it's so uncomfortable for the viewers too

@@aestheticcat8976 because this gen of kpop stans (my opinion) care more about their ideal view of the idol, not the idol’s actual well being. That’s also why idols of opposite gender can’t collaborate together that easily anymore, they always have to be extra careful so they don’t upset the fans

True. Sexy women, who are naturally sexy or want to be so on their own accord, should be celebrated and supported. 👏❤️
And for the one's who aren't sexy because they don't have the x factor...
The road isnt easy to be an idol, i really hope some companies whether well-known or not will stop doing this strategy.🤧
Especially Tzuyu 😥
I I noticed that when you wear revealing outfits or if you have abs in the group and you show them all you get more views you get more fans and get more famous which is really messed up because you should stand in them for talent not body
@Dancer Oriya i think they lack of confident when overweight knowing that knetz put strict beauty standard to female idols
its what we called standards example beauty standards
there are many kpop idols that have talents but not "handsome/attractive" enough and they get hate for that and i agree with you like you said they should support them for their talents not their body or face but we cant change their opinion, but i hate when they send hate like example "hes/shes ugly, hes not that handsome" no one is born ugly remember that someone you dont find attractive is stunning to someone else.
@Dancer Oriya true :( and knetz always looking at appearance first instead of talent, hard pill to swallow
@I G0T7 Problems But You Have No Jams Sana highest viewed fancam was her wearing push up bra

The only reason sexy concepts don't sell well is because mature girl groups get hated on and slut shamed even if they are all for that concept.
@@ClaireEmilia Most of the girls look 100% confident in AOA and always have. I do think a lot of them just lack stage presense
I get if girl groups wear sexy clothes and feel confident in them. But I'm against forcing them into clothes which they're not comfortable in. Plus I'm scared for their safety because there's so many perves around them who takes videos of their private part and zoom and etc which is super creepy.
They do that to girls in cute concepts though.
I'm a guy so I enjoy seeing beautiful girls. I do feel sorry for some of the overly revealing outfits K-pop idols are forced to wear sometimes. This is a male driven industry and females need to be given more power over decision making when it comes to things like visual concepts.
Many girls enjoy seeing beautiful girls too.
The thing that I find so sad about the stellar situation is that the girls were pushed into a concept they didn't feel comfortable with but the public made the girls themselves feel guilty for it. Saying things like "they didn't have to go for that sexy concept just to get attention" etc when that was sadly the truth
The same public that ignored all of their previous releases...
@@yukijames1321 The songs were more sexy and the concept is just What is was. However the extreme outfits should have been thought over.
Their 'sexy' songs are actually good too, like they had good vocals. But you do not need to dress skimpy to perform a sexy song :(
They also have big 3 visual and when the back up audio had some problems they finish the song without it,they can sing and dance
mamamoo in the corner sitting knowing damn well they take part of styling their clothes
I don't like the sexy outfit thing, I think most of them just look weird, especially if they don't exactly fit the group's vibe or style.

(In case you're interested in Stellar, Jeon Youl has just released her solo single "Mamacita", please give it a listen ;;)
Personally, I like sexy concepts but I think it's sad that idols, and by that I really mean female idols, have to face hate and feel uncomfortable in their outfits. It's easy for companies to play with that shock value but they should care about their idols' wellbeings more. I also draw a big fat line when it comes to underage idols, I don't wanna see some teens shaking their booties in way too short clothing, it's weird and inappropriate!
I remember MOMO using basically an Lingerie at MAMA or some other award ceremony last year, and was a very cold day must have been very uncomfortable for her.

i don't mind the sexy concept i actually like it but only if the idols want to do it, it's an messed up situation bc they're uncomfortable doing something they don't want to and i'm uncomfortable knowing they're doing it against their will,, it's just sad to see them being forced to do something that in the end does more harm then good to the them

A shame that Stellar were mistreated, Marionette and Vibrato were total bops.

Plus alot of kpop fans feel like theyre not thin enough anyway because we are constantly looking at young, beautiful and thin people all the time and it pressures alot of us thinking we need something like this to look like them

Thank you for doing this video. I think, it’s very important to share this topic.

This reminds of group 2ne 1 they didn't use much reveling clothes in their MV but that doesn't stop them to shine.

I loveeeee your transparent lavender shirt/jacket omg
I appreciate your hardwork on your videos!! Great quality!!
i swear she is just sparkly all around
i think theres a huge difference between a woman confident in her body and sexiness (like hwasa) who's comfortable in revealing outfits versus those who aren't comfortable and forced to dress in something they don't want to. i know i wouldn't be comfortable in a lot of these outfits in front of a crowd, but if a girl can do that with confidence more power to her. it was so heartbreaking to see the stellar members talking about what happened to them, i hope they're all doing better now and can heal from that experience.
Despite their treatment, Stellar’s music, vocal talent and performances stand on their own to this day.
your earring is SO cute!!
Sometimes when the girls sit, I see them always wanting to cover up their legs with their hands and it makes me feel so uncomfortable for them
8:28 I didn’t realize it was A SKIRT untill she pointed out I thought it was a short.
When I was younger I used to love Stellar, I even have a bike that says "Stellar" on it, I can't believe they were treated like that :(
Stellar will always be my favorite group
Queen is backk
East or west grazy grace is the best!!! Love you lots mam ........ You are my inspiration I really love your style, music everything..............
Stellar were soo underrated... their vocal were amazing 🙌🏼
