As a Canadian who remembers the Avro Arrow, I don't get why could India be proud of an fighter it bought. Sure, it is a valid strategic decision. But every time a country imports a fighter, its loses an opportunity to train its aerospace industry and engineers in fighter aircraft design.

India has borders with Pakistan and China. India's main and immediate concern is to protect mother land, not to develop its airspace industry. Rafale is currently one of the best, if not the best, battle proof jet fighter available on the market. Smart choice from India.

Indians don't have a industry. They buy whatever can be sold to them, then they praise it to be the best in the galaxy superior to whatever you have.
It's extremely expensive and difficult to develop that type of industry, and unless you create something that you can sell and maintain cheaply, it may be that you design s plane you never gave to use beyond showing force to deter conflict. For India it makes sense to simply purchase a good aircraft with reliable track record abd reasonably future proof that possibly sink billions into creating aircraft that dirt suitvtheur needs.
If the Chengdu J-20 is as good as they say, why do they keep purchasing Sukhoi Su-30 & 35s?

1) Why do comparison videos ignore the fact that the Rafale carries its load externally? The normal combat load of 11-14 hard points of external fuel tanks, several missiles and bombs will give off a significant RCS signature. Add to the fact that the Rafael is clearly a conventional fighter with minimal stealth shaping and you have one large radar signature
2) Is there any evidence SPECTRA uses active cancellation? There are only rumours form unreliable and unverified sources. If the Americans who have spent 1000x more on stealth technology than France don’t have active radar cancellation... what are the chances the french have it? You would think they wouldn’t have lost so many aircraft competitions if this was true.
Nearly every modern 4.5+ fighter has a capable ECM suite. The Spectra is no more special than the advertised ECM of any other plane of the same generation.
In saying all this, the IAF doesn’t seem to have a coherent plan or doctrine for their airforce. Their strange obsession with ‘dog fighting’ is evident in all their airforce exercises with foreign countries. Most modern airforces have placed a huge emphasis on BVR combat supported by force multipliers like AWACS and aerial refuelling. For an airforce the size of the Indian airforce, they only have 3 modern AWACS.
The purchase of only 36 Rafales will not change this. The bulk of the Indian airforce is the Su-30MKI which has the obsolete BARS radar which is also a PESA radar. The KLJ-7A AESA radar on the JF-17A Block III has the same detection range for a 3m2 target and has a much smaller RCS. This means they will be able to shoot first. The SU-30MKI showed what terrible performance and training the IAF displayed in the clashes with Pakistani F16s. They were not able to shot one missile before losing one Mig-21Bis. The 5 rafales are the only true BVR platform in service in the IAF.
What the IAF needs is true modernisation and leadership to have a coherent and modern doctrine for air combat. They rely on to many suppliers and have to many aircraft types which is a logistics nightmare. The preference should always be a made in India program but each program (Arjun/Tejas/Uttam) has been a massive failure. But to build a powerful and successful country, you need to have indigenous productions which has eluded India. But to not persist will be India’s downfall.

Info Mania What are the similarities between J20 and F22 except that they are both airplanes? J20 uses a duck layout while F22 uses a conventional layout. The engine of J20 is Russian AL-31F or Chinese WS-15. What does it have to do with F22? What else do you people say besides copy? I was led to believe that the J20's role was more of a long range fighter, to take out refuelling planes etc so they couldn't fuel their fighters therefore not able to enter Chinese airspace.
In the combat experience: you listed Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq, Syria for the Rafael. Did they engage any "real" fights with enemies?

Hanson Yu yes, but not the MKI variant. That is upgraded with Russian/ Israeli/ French components. Comparable to at least SU 35 in the Chinese air force. The aircraft is only part of the story though. The Terrain is critical and so are the pilots. Those favor India.
They can all be detected at visual range. But the non-stealth one can be detected at beyond visual range

I'm giving it to the Rafale just based on its active electronic stealth which I've heard is suprisingly good, that said I'd say this would be a close fight.

@@goldenboy5693 That correction wasn't smooth lol,as far as RCS is concerned don't be in illusion J20's RCS is at somewhere between 0.08 and 0.3 square meters whereas F22's RCS is from 0.0001 to 0.0005 square meters and there is no need for 5th gen to break it's stealth because of their internal bays and the Chinese PL15 which has longest range of 300km & the meteor which has range of 200km doesn't even come close so improve ur satisfactory knowledge first

If we add the missiles to the Rafale wing and compared the silhouette of the two, it will be obvious the Rafale stand out more. And if we believe that the guy who see the other guy first and has the long range missile for the job, then he wins. Analysing the Iraq wars, most of the coalition kills were because they detected the Iraqi planes first and hit them mainly with long distant sparrows. Modern warfares means you need to see better and shoot further. Satellites, AWACS and long range missile will decide any aerial war.
I noticed one thing pretty soon, when I read the comments. My conclusion is : both of these aircrafts has a better accuracy than most of the commenters, when it comes to spelling the names correctly. It's RAFALE. Not "Rafael".

Are you mad bro . How can the j20 be an air superiority fighter . It dosent have any characteristics of an air superiority fighter whatsoever. It can only be used as a surveillance jet or as an information gathering jet . Fighters like Sukhoi su30mki , Rafale ,su35,su57 are known as air superiority fighters as these jets possesses some of the air superiority characteristics such as cannards , thrust vectoring nozzles,high thrust to weight ratio, high angle of attack , etc . I know that the j20 also has cannards but it is somewhat impractical and feels only like an extra feature on paper . As the active moving cannards increases its RCS though compromising it's stealth nature . Also the weapon carrying capacity is low and also it is not highly maneuverable due to its giant size . But your point was correct , both of these fighters are of different category
@@Al-hb2wo bro when the enemy radar releases the electromagnetic waves towards an aircraft it gets reflected back towards the radar upon hitting the jets body . The point is that there should be none to minimum 90 degree angle so that the electromagnetic reflection towards the enemy radar will be less . But in case of active cannards the surface area consisting 90 degree angle becomes prone to em waves (as the cannards move ,thus creating 90 degree angle). As far as I know the su35 is not considered as a stealth fighter jet . It is considered as a heavy weight multirole fighter . Also front cannards compromises the RCS more than the back cannards as it is located on the front of the aircraft and it allows the easy reflection of em waves back to the radar. Despite these facts the design of the jet also infuences things such as cannard wings and you can see in Google that the j20 has some serious design flaws along with not really good engine . Personally, I think that the cannards are not necessary in case of j20 . If the Chinese engineers manages to shift the jet's centre of gravity slightly towards the front then the jets will be more stable in air , thus eliminating the need of cannard wings but even after doing so the j20 still will not be good stealth fighter .

Get your info correct, okay? Even the first page has an error. The first flight time for Rafale and J20 are 1986 and 2011, the Introduction time are 2001 and 2017, respectively. Quiet easy to figure out on wikipedia. Why do you compare the first flight time of Rafale with J20's introduction time?
The J 20 is about to be upgraded in the future, and despite being officially 'in service' there is still a lot to be made on this aircraft. According to some 'aviation experts' the J 20 might have a low RCS from the front but not from the sides and the rear due to the canards and the jet exhaust [it could be slightly better with the new saw shaped exhaust they installed on the final version] still, it remain to be seen what progress will be made in the future on this aircraft.
I`m mostly a fan of F-22, not J-20. But I heard the idea that canards actually don`t affect RCS.
