All very interesting, yet the only allied interceptor to ever catch Concorde and pass it was the old English Electric Lightning, which it did on two occasions.
I think that just proves what a remarkable achievement Concorde was. Imagine being a top line fighter pilot in your flight suit pushing the envelope of your craft to its maximum. Then you look out of your cockpit to see yourself being overtaken by a fat businessman sipping champagne with his shoes off.
@Arthur Humphreys Baloney, the 104 could only reach that in a one off special attempt zoom climb. The fastest speed might go to one aircraft for a split second, but maintaining that maximum speed over a distance is real flying, and the EE Lightning had that, fuel burn eventually limiting it. But as someone said, sipping champagne at 60,000 feet, no flying suit, being chased by NATO's finest, and only one can catch you, but could only stay with you for five minutes before Bingo fuel, shows what a masterpiece Concorde was as it could carry on for another 3 hours at that speed.
I do believe that the actual top speed of the Lightning was Mach 2.27, the F-14 had a top speed of Mach 2.35, and the F-15 is Mach 2.5. The F-106 had a top speed of Mach 2.3 similar era and higher top speed. Still gotta give kudos, the Lightning was a tough bird!

@@galicije83 Worth pointing out that the 14 had data link, and entered service 7 years before the 31. The controls for datalink was next to the rwr control panel to the right. As per the missiles the r33 is believed (without inside sources) to reach speeds of mach 3-5 depending on launch parameters, about the same for the aim54. By 1999 the aim54 could reach out to around 190 km while the r33 was at 160 km. The odds of either missile hitting at this range is astronomically low though. This means that the actual useful range was sub 100 km at this point. The missiles themselves are very similar, meaning it is kinda a tossup today. As per radar the two radar are actually similar in terms of performance. The differences are in the type of radar with the 14 being pulse doplar, and the 31 being magnetically scanned. That said the f14 had the advantage of at 50miles being able to target and engage 6 targets simultaneously, with the 31 at 50km (slightly shorter range) only having the ability to track and engage 4 targets. This is a simple breakdown, but I figured it would make the point about the onboard systems, the f14 was never taken out of service because of poor performance, but budget cuts. The mig 31 is still an amazing aircraft, however it competes at best peer to peer with the 14. What about F102 and F106 both specifically designed for long range Soviet Bomber interception. They carried the Genie Nuclear Rocket to take out Bomber Fleet or Formations plus their Canopy/ Cockpit was designed to use as a Battereing Ram Knife to cut through Aircraft Skins
Seeing the inclusion of some multi-role fighters, I should have included the Su-27. With all the love I have for Soviet planes, I'd still put the F-14 above all other mentioned aircraft. It has greater maneuverability than the MiG-31, and more varied missiles (for different ranges, long, mid, and short). It would be up there with the Su-27... and that's saying much, as the F-14 is 12 years older than the Su-27.
You forgot three dedicated interceptors on your best of list: The F101B Voodoo, the TU-28 Fiddler and the F106 Delta Dart. The F101B was a 2-seat, long-range supersonic interceptor that served primarily with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for decades into the 1980s. The Soviet TU-28 Fiddler was another long range supersonic interceptor, and the best and fastest of the three was the F106 Delta Dart which could fly at mach 2.3 and served with the USAF into the 1980s. A for effort but only a C for research. You need to revise and expand this list to top ten at least.
As someone who served in the airforce, what these armchair critics fail to mention is aircraft serviceability and its external fit / configuration. You can have the best aircraft in the world, but if it’s unserviceable and requires 100s of maintenance hours per flying hour... then it’s doing nothing on the ground. Secondly, place large external fuel tanks on an aircraft like the Tornado F3 then you really limit the manoeuvrability and it’s quoted top speed is unachievable
Okay, all these planes are great in the interceptor role, but the F4 Phantom as well as the F14 Tomcat are no dedicated interceptors, they are rather multi role fighters.

@@theflyingdutchman4083 Hornets are great aircraft to work on and fly. My best memories from the Navy has been when I was working on Hornets. I thoroughly hated working on Prowlers and Tomcats.
Excellent 👌
Good work ﴾THE BUZZ﴿ team
You have an interesting idea of what "of all time" means. Aviation fighters and interceptors have been around a lot longer than this list would cover, how about including aircraft from earlier times.
@Arthur Humphreys Just look at the MiG.
@Arthur Humphreys then why couldn’t they catch Concorde in the NATO trials
Soviet made jets are not jets they are flying beast
Love from America 😘
Where is the funny?
Thanks I guess
Huh?
The Phantom, Tomcat and Eagle (Tied with the 4A-18 Superhornet) are the best because of their Longevity in service.
Hell, up until less than a decade ago the C-47 Cargo Plane was the most used single aircraft in the world and is STILL being used today.
WTF is the Phantom doing on this list? Also, where's the Fiddler? For a pure interceptor, the Foxhound is top but for me, nothing is as beautiful as the EEL 🏴!
I love your channel but I love you more lady buzz. ❤❤😍😍
Tomcat such a beautiful design
Imagine the F-14 with modern Avionics and the engines from the F-22 Raptor.
No body knows the true power of F14 tomcats
Even the Americans
If you want to ask somebody about its true power ask Iranians
F14 was the only thing Iranian air force had to answer the overwhelming number of Iraqi aircrafts from MIGs to Super etandards to Mirages
In late 80s Iranian F14s successfully destroyed several MIG-25 too
So yeah F14 is a hero a beast with no equal in my opinion
@@alirezarezaei2976 true they were the ones mostly in combat with them
That would have been better than the f35 and the super hornet

Aeronautica militare italiana (italian air force) had this iterceptor in leasing by RAF because its standard interceptor F 104 ASA Starfighter was too old and EFA Typhoon was in late. This Tornado interceptor was replaced after the end of the leasing by a number of F 16 Falcon interceptor always in leasing. Now AMI is stabilized with 90 Thyphoon interceptor and is going to replace its bombers Panavia Tornado IDS and AMX Ghibli with 75 F 35 Lighting (60 F 35A and 15 F 35). Others 15 F 35B for Marina Militare (Italian Navy) to replace AV 8 Plus. But in your list is missing F 15 C/D Eagle interceptor USAF.
GOT THE LIGHTNING CLIMB RATE WRONG IT SHOULD BE 50000FT PER MINUTE 15100M/MIN =252.52 M/S
F14tomcat with its legendary missle "phoenix" made Iran to save air superiority during the war with Iraq.
After war Russia agreed to sell mig31 to Iran as a good replacement for F14,but US
didn't permit Russia to sell mig31 to Iran,
Panavia Tornado is a very sexy plane😄😂
I thought the Tornado was an attack bomber and that the euro fighter was our intercepter.
@@The_Greedy_Orphan I know that!
As sexy as Rocco Siffredi ... the tail is oversized .
@@raoulvolfoni1800 Good for fast low level flight that would be the real combat scenario
Nice ... I didn't know that... Interceptor planes..
I don't believe F4 was designed as an interceptor. It is a multi-purpose jet and still functioning today because of its versatility.
Mig 31 beautiful bird 🔥🔥👌👌👌
Tornado is not an interceptor, it was a ground attack aircraft. The interceptor version was an afterthought.
The Lightning, a true interceptor was the only aircraft in tests to be able to successfully intercept Concorde.
Very intersting video
Electric Lighting lived up to its name
The MIG-31 first flew in 1975, so I find it highly doubtful that stopping UAVs was high on its list of requirements
The tornado is so beautiful
F14's most effective weapon (besides aircrew) Aim 54 Phoenix
Well tomcat was great but MiG 31 outclass tomcat in any aspects....it has have much batter radar and most advance radar in 80s it was PESA, first ever data link put in any fighter plane, it can cominicate with rest in squadron... much batter R33 missile then tomcats aim 54 phoenix...
Till today ZaslonAM is most powerfull radar ever put in any plane...so yes F14 was great plane, i love it and its my favorite plane of all time, but MiG 31 as interceptor is far superior then mighty tomcat...
This also doesn’t bring up the bombcat nickname (and what it entitles) or the multitude of other roles each aircraft preformed/preforms in.
@@questofknowledge8788 But the Mig- 31 Foxhound. Can carry the 1,860 mile range. Mach 12, Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missile. That can be armed with. A 1,102 Lb warhead or a 500 Kt Nuclear Warhead. The longest Aim -54 missile shot hitting a drone was 132 miles.
@@kevinvojta692 And once more, how do you confirm this number, and how could it be used? While an impressive weapon, the point of my above post was to show that they are very similar in terms of performance. There were more upgrades planned for the 14, and who is to say that they couldn’t carry a similar missile if the us ever adopted one. Also keep in mind that you could also shoot down missiles with the Phoenix if required.
I still think the English Electric Lightning is one of the coolest jets ever.
The lightning needs to be higher
In 90s A IAF Mig 25 Breaks sound Barrier in Pak airspace on a secret mission.
I've heard about that it was a morale crusher of a kind and they broke the windows with sonic booms perfect payback
Yes and most interesting thing about that PAF and pak government told this not Indian air force/govt still Pakistan fears of it
Indian air force, touching the sky with glory in Pakistan 😉🤣
The maximum speed of a MiG-25 Is 3494 km/h thats over mach 3.3 but in these speeds aircraft have big chance to destruction of a engines. Yes in 1th place Is my also favorite aircraft, the MiG-31👍👍👍
Nice videos...
In essence, the Tornado was not purely an interceptor, it would be like saying that the f-14 is one of the best bombers, each one had a variant but initially it was not made for that. In its place I would put the F-106.
Mig 21 best air craft
Very nice 👍 👍 👍
Please increase your list to 10, and include the F-106. Thank you.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_F-106_Delta_Dart
Where's the F-106?
No Mirages? Especially Mirage III is the best interceptor of the 60-70's
How about the F-15C. That was designed specifically as an air superiority fighter and is better than anything on this list.
Hb f15?
P-38 best from WWII
P38 was super long range fighter not really an interceptor... ME163 now that was a pure interceptor lol.
The Panavia Tornado was a Plane developed in Germany, Italy and the uk bad used by all of them not just the UK
Always the best
love form disputed area of balochistan(iran)
As someone who served in the airforce, what these armchair critics fail to mention is aircraft serviceability and its external fit / configuration.
You can have the best aircraft in the world, but if it’s unserviceable and requires 100s of maintenance hours per flying hour... then it’s doing nothing on the ground.
Secondly, place large external fuel tanks on an aircraft like the Tornado F3 then you really limit the manoeuvrability and it’s quoted top speed is unachievable
How would someone get the idea that the tornado is an interceptor
Huge fan of MIG 31 😍
The Swedish Draken And Viggen should have been there
Okay, all these planes are great in the interceptor role, but the F4 Phantom as well as the F14 Tomcat are no dedicated interceptors, they are rather multi role fighters.
As far as I know, the last dedicated interceptor used by the US Air Force was the F106 Delta Dart.
I think the f14 was an air superiority fighter.
tomcat was never built for ground attacks, it require an external pod...
Should have just named the video the best fighters developed in the mid cold war period
They were both developed as fleet defence fighters, to protect the fleet!
Later on, both became bomb trucks side by side with F-105 and A4, A7.
I hope one day we see adf raven operating in real life
I doubt it will happen, given we lack the Principality of Belka or Gründer Industries
The mirage is also an interceptor and considerably better then the mig21 and lightning
????🤮
F4 phantom????? No!!!... F 106 delta dart!!!
cool vid
Mig 25 is still world's fastest fighter ⚡
What is the difference between an interceptor and air superiority fighter?
Where the F-15?
F-15 is a air superiority aircraft. Not an interceptor.
The F4 as designed was a pure intercepter. No Air to Ground capability carried AIM7 and AIM4 missiles both were BVR. The Air Forces F4C was close to an intercepter.
Opps! next time if possible include radars capability in terms metre or kilometer as other specification like range included at the video.
The F-15 should have been on the top of the list !!!
F-15 is a air superiority aircraft. Not an interceptor.
@@swampmonster4935 Agreed. Though, they didn't exactly stick to that premise with this list. The tornado, F4, and others should not have been on this list. The Mig-21, F-104, and F-106 should definitely have been included. I believe some of the early Mirage planes were pure interceptors as well.
Mig 25 had serious problems. It's turn and manuever window was horrible and it drinks fuel like crazy. It specifically was designed to intercept the B58 and SR71 neither of which do more than drive real fast.
I always liked the tom cat ,and think they should have kept it. the super hornet is not a replacement.
Loved watching them take off then shoot straight up in full burner! And the 18 can’t touch the Tomcat.
Did you say that there wouldn’t be any multi-role fighters? Yet the F-4 is on this list......
You could sort of say the same with the F-14 also.
@@thefrecklepuny Sort of. Though the F-14 was originally intended to be a long range interceptor for the US Navy. Like the Mig-25 and 31 it was equipped with a long range radar and very long range missles for use against enemy bombers who would potentially attack the fleet. Only later was it optimized for other tasks. While initially intending for the F-4 as an interceptor, it went through its transformation in a much shorter time period than the F-14 did.
good tv thanks
I would put the f14 as the number 1
Good work, but you folks missed baap of interceptors, Mig 21
The stand-out dedicated interceptor was the paradigm-shifting ME262. (OK so there were a few stabs at other variants, but this was foremost an interceptor, unlike some on this list.)

f4 was multi roll or more of attack/bomber in nam. later models didnt even have a gun.
F4 originally had no gun. After heavy losses due to ineffective missile technology of the time, guns were later incorporated.
@@Primus54 my bad. I thought they quit adding the gun cause they thought the days of dog fighting was over. But maybe that was original like you said and later got added
@@SgtJoeSmith: Yes... the original thinking was that up close dogfights were a thing of the past and that missiles would rule the day, so no gun. It was a later addition. I guess the lesson was learned because we haven’t produced a fighter since w/o a gun or cannon. (The F-117 doesn’t count as a real fighter, despite the “F” designation... it was always going to be a small bomber. Rumor has it they chose the “F” designation to attract fighter pilots to opt into the program).
@@Primus54 yeah the nighthawk shouldve been A117 or A17 or something instead F. Never understood the numbering choices on some planes. Like how we go from f22 and yf23 to f35. Shouldn't it been f24 or f25? The f century series weren't they more of a bomber than fighter series?
@@SgtJoeSmith: Yeah... I’ve lost track of the logic of the numbers. As to the Century Series, even though most eventually had ground attack capabilities, I’d say the early ones were more intercepter and air superiority platforms with the exception of the F-105 Thunderchief, which was originally designed to be a nuclear-attack fighter. The F-102, F-104, and F-106 were definitely interceptor designs.
