Ray Manzarek's signature sound for The Doors was him playing a Rhodes Piano Bass with his left hand while playing a Gibson G-101 with his right. Can't mistake The Doors for any other band's sound 😎🔥

They recorded this in summer of 1966 and released it on New Year’s Day 1967. The record label promoted this new group with a Sunset Strip billboard, “Break on Through with The Doors.” The label initially censored and edited the word “high” from the song but the uncut version emerged this century under looser industry standards.

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek plays two keyboard instruments, one of them being the Fender Rhodes "Piano Bass" - an electric piano that offers almost three octaves of bass playing range packaged in a piano type electric keyboard.
The other keyboard generally is an electric organ and this varies. On "Light My Fire" Ray plays a Vox (brand) Continental (model) - Vox ended in 1971 and in 1992 the brand was sold to Korg.
Alternatively to the Vox Continental, Ray played an electric organ by the "Lowrey Organ Company" that was sold as Gibson G-101, as Gibson Portable Organ, and as Kalamazoo K-101. This was intended to compete with the Vox Continental as well as the Farfisa.
Ray Manzarek was its most famous player, probably. The 101 had a few features over the Continental - pitch bending and a flat top that easily held the piano bass.

Ray Manzarek went through a couple of different organs in his time with The Doors. This is an early track and he was playing a Vox Continental. He moved to a Gibson G101 combo organ (has a separate keyboard to play bass lines) and finally to a Hammond B3.

If you want to continue the ride, I'd suggest "When The Musics Over" for a more lengthy, serene song, "Peace Frog" for an upbeat, funky atmosphere, "Five To One" for an in your face , confrontational vibe (that I understand some well known rap artists have sampled).

That 60's and early 70's "organ sound" you refer to is so common for a good reason. It was a Hammond B8 organ. It was the first (and for quite a while the only) electronic organ that was durable enough to survive a rock tour. For almost a decade any band playing an organ played a B8. When the synthesizer became popular and affordable you also see the advent of more "tunable" organs.

As a Buddhist every day I deal in order to find a mental place I call the "sea of tranquility." It's a point of view that gobbles up the chill, swallows the cool and evaporates your bad self thus bringing joy to the world. This song, "Break on Through," is dedicated to the effort it takes to maintain the cool. Of course if you already made the grade you are probably looking back and can recall how foolish it all was to try so hard when it is already there and no need. Anyway. That's how I read the song. Be cool my sister and brother. All the love.

Not sure how known DJ Shadow is in America but he was pretty big here in the UK in the early 2000s. He's a hip-hop DJ that makes his tunes almost entirely of samples from 60s/70s but chops them up in new ways
Organ Donor is a great example of taking one Organ sample from an old hippie song and slicing it up into some cool electronic/ jazz/ funk/ hip-hop

My favourite Doors song, with that bosanova beat, so Latin!
This was the 60s, remember Jim died in 1971, so after that they were no more Ray's organ playing was the bomb! No bass guitar, bass sound with the keyboards. Love you madly next please

They don't make movies about a band very often. Oliver Stone directed "The Doors" starring Val Kilmer. It was pretty good as far as this type of movie and everyone knowing the band so well. The band was formed by Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek when they were film students at UCLA. Other notable bands that were started by UCLA students are Linkin Park, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Bad Religion.

The fuzzy, bluesy organ was used a lot at that time. You are right, BJ.

This sound was the background to my life in the 60's and early 70's. I grew up In San Francisco, so the hippie vibe was on. The incense, weed, patolli oil smells were in the air . This was considered very out there music. So, it does not come across as exotic now . Especially, Light my fire.

First album I bought with my paper route money in 1968 at 14. Their 1967 debut record with an appropriate first song. At that time, they cut out the word, “high”. 😂

I still consider "The Doors" great for their day, and then realize they recorded this in 1966, which makes "great" a vastly inadequate term.

Actually most of the songs were either written by Kreiger alone or Morrison alone or with Kreiger or all The Doors.

For a 60's organ vibe from another band of the time, try Possession by Iron Butterfly
