  • Scurlogue Champ would be renowned for one of the strongest finishes ever seen over long-distance racing. The crowds would adore him and could not believe how he could win his races from being so far behind.
Scurlogue Champ is a famous racing greyhound from the 1980s. Along with Mick the Miller and Ballyregan Bob he is arguably one of the greatest three hounds that ever raced in Britain.
"Whenever he ran, you'd be forced to park and walk a long way away from the track. Nobody minded. He drew people from all over Britain, and amazed them. He was the ultimate showman."
    Early Life:
Scurlogue Champ was a black dog whelped in July 1982 by Sand Man, out of Old Rip. He was bred by Francis Kent from Levittstown, County Wexford and was one of a litter of six dogs and two bitches. He moved to John Byrne on a farm where he received his name before being sold to Jim Sutton, who reared him.
After several races in Ireland he was put up for sale at the May 1984 Shelbourne Park sales. Owner/trainer Ken Peckham took him to England, after agreeing a price for £1,700, with Irish trainer Brendan Matthews who had won the sales bidding at 1500 guineas.
Was amazed at the lack of the tribute / montage / documentary videos there are on Scurlogue Champ on RUclips so decided to put this together.

I just love watching them run, and when a truly special dog comes along that like you said moves the needle for track attendance and handle AND performs like Champ nothing better. I'm jealous and hope you folks across the pond appreciate that you stll get to go to the races . In the states it's dead, and so sad. I think there are like 4 tracks maybe 3 still operating and they're on borrowed time. When the Florida ban went into effect that was all she wrote there was still 9-10 tracks at the time it was voted through easily in what was supposed to be a close vote. I had the privelage of living near Multnomah Greyhound Park in Portland, OR where i saw 1986 GROC winner Ben G Speedboat run for several years, and local dog Daring Don win in 1990 when Multnomah hosted the Race of Champions which had anywhere over the years between $125,000 and $250,000 in prize money with 1/2 to the winner. I also at Multnomah watched for better part of 3 summers in a row 1988-90 watch one of the best US pure sprinters of all time He's My Man whose rush to the 1st turn was awesome. There in the late 80's early 90's i'd say across the country between the 550yd and 670yd stakes races 2 dozen or more that had $100,000 in prize money. there was even 2 or 3 Invitational no qualifying 100,000 races , it was AWESOME. Then 10 years in Denver working less than a mile from Mile High Greyhound Park and so many Oshkosh dogs i can't keep track, 89' GROC winner Oshkosh Juliet and her littermate Oshkosh Lively also made the final as well !, 2X All-american and capt. Oshkosh Racey who made a won stakes finals at both distances. As well as a dog very similar in style to Scurlogue Champ Oshkosh Rambo who could bring the crowd to their feet coming from 20 lengths or more as they hit the stretch turn and made it seem the others were running in quicksand he went by them so fast it took your breath away... Or at least mine anyway lol. Maybe the best of all cut down by a career ending injury after 7 races at Mile High 5 of them setting and resetting the track record "Molotov" . if you search youtube there are several videos of him.and another by injury when they escaped the kennel and got out on pavement and ruined his pads and a leg injury to boot, oh shit what was his Oh "Vaporize" Sorry got nostalgic there, but so many great summer memories at those 2 fantastic facilities that had some of the best dogs in the country year after year. I miss it for sure

And I was there just about every time to lay down my bet on this dog. At last count SUBLINER had won 18 straight races. There’s a dog at Iowa greyhound park breaks last everytime he hits the quinella every race , most he won was 8 in a row before he lost.

I think this Greyhound is deliberately letting the other dogs waste away in the first lap, only to suddenly accelerate 15 km/h faster than the other dogs, so that the second lap is no problem for him to win the race.

January 1981, Florida. I went to a dog track. I saw a dog who was dead last until they started to turn for home. He blew them away !!! My thought was > what compels a dog to speed up like that ???

Just has tremendous reserves of stamina Bill.
Scurlogue might be the one exception but no dog runs faster on the second lap than they do on the first lap but the others are slowing so it is deceptive.
I saw him at Catford a couple of times. Fantastic :)

@@Isleofskye Just the same with thoroughbreds. They all slow down [except rarely] in each succeeding quarter. "Crawling home" is an apt description of what happens in any animal race.
