Hey Professor, one of the important things among those unclear concludsion is “ We are “Thai “ and we have been very successful in Melting all ethnic groups & races to live in harmony . Thai culture today is still doing that way. These cultures adaptation is a slow process . We are also welcoming another cultures if those can be fit ( in a good & positive way ) into what it is (thai culture)today , then we mixing and ensuring all who living in Thailand are happy. Today we are taking western culture into our ways of life.

Assam, north east India, also has many Tai tribes and communities like Tai Khamyung, Tai Khamti, Tai Phakial(Phake),Tai Shyam(Shan), Tai Turung and Tai Ahom. They were later comers after the Tibeto Burmese Bodos and the Mon Khmer Khasi and Jayantia. Alpine Kalitas are the other major community here.

Glad to see you travel for people, history and geography. Thanks for sharing,.i visited Ayutthaya thrice and was awed by its magnificent ruins.✌️😊
Post-Ayutthaya, the Siamese unification by King Taksin, the modernization by Chakri Rama V King Chulalongkorn and later established “identity” unified and saved the Kingdom of Thailand as a nation, society and political entity.

@Da PhetdalaHi, history is so dramatic that accepting them as factual is difficult sometimes so doubts about those in power "faked" history is understandable. The importance of it is that today. Thailand is a prosperous and peaceful nation with diverse ethnicity. Sawadee krub.

    • @7RQ89
      @7RQ89 6 лет назад +2

+Da Phetdala Thank you for sharing. I studied the history of SE Asian decades ago,it is the way historical text are written always with referral to the name of current sovereign geopolitical entity. However, it was only during my recent visit of Northern Thailand that the name "Lanna" was refreshed from one of the chapters in "the history of Siam" as a separate kingdom. During my visits to Thailand, I also noted that the distinctive local spoken language (accent) ,demographics and local culture of northern Thailand (Lanna). Indeed, it is impossible to ignore the geopolitical impacts due to historical colonization of southeast Asian kingdoms by Western powers and how it has shaped "Siam" and "Indochine" today. Whenever I arrived in the airports in Thailand, I always feel welcomed in the "Kingdom of Thailand" and really the future is all that matters.

@Da Phetdala I have met mixed race minorities (Eurasians and Asians included) in Thailand whom introduced themselves as "Khun Thai" the Thai nationality language, culture and their love for Thailand, nationality and citizenry comes before ethnicity, and I see this as positive for the future of Thailand. And whenever I think of Thailand, I wish and pray for its continued growth, peace and prosperity.

    • @7RQ89
      @7RQ89 6 лет назад

Da Phetdala Thank you, in my humble opinion, the chakri kings Rama IV and Rama V and the post 1932 "nationalists" did more for Kingdom of Thailand than any foreign powers since 1767. The nothern Lanna was horse-traded from the British and "liberated" from the Burmese; the Southern most provinces were annexed as buffer states to counter the British and Thais liberated Laos territories from the French. Without this "unification" the Thailand nation would have lost it like Burma (Myanmar).

This is fabulous. Have been binge watching your content. There is an uncanny similarity in so many nations trying to extend nationalist ideologies and force fit a cultivated identify. It helps 'nations' keep their citizens aligned to the political ideologies. Question is what is a nation and why is it so important to have nation states. Is it purely administrative and economic or is it meant to also bring people with similar cultural heritage together? If there is no unified cultural heritage is the purpose purely for economics ( control land, natural resources to further the interests of a group of peoples) ?

In TH, it s taught in schools that Thai groups came down here and rose after Angkor declined, Thai script inherited mon-khmer alphabets and share many common pali-sansakrit words, and no surprise cultures, tradition and arts shared among Thai, Lao, Myanmese, and Khmer bcoz religions, political marriage and wars driving people transfer.

Mixed w/ the local populace then remigrated back to the Philippines during the collapse of Srivijayan Empire from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. What made Siam great was that it was a melting pot of peoples and cultures. Like the Romans borrowed from Etruscans, Greeks and Trojans. Siam was influenced by Tai, Shan, Mon, Khmer, Indian, Chinese and so on. "Thailand" is a nation of mixed race peoples which managed to a achieve a level of cohesive multiculturalism, due in no small part to its Kings' acceptance of new ideas and embrassing foreigners. Many nationalities were employed at court.
Trying to force a "Thai" ethnicity is silly and was only started by the Military Dictator Phibum. Thais are mostly a mix of Tai, Khmer, Chinese, Indian and more, there's no single "Thai" origin. Ethno Nationalists are idiots.

There were 5 tribes of Thai who were subjugated by the Chinese (easy to do as they were busy fighting among themselves). The Thai's rebelled against their Chinese rulers and started moving south and adopted the name THAI which to them meant free . There was a very large battle in Northern Laos where 35,000 Thai warriors killed 250,000 Chinese led by a Chinese paper tiger general during their retreat (so the story goes).

The old history that said Thai people came from the Altai mountain near Mongolia and northern China has been debunked because there was no evidence to support that claim, but many Thais still want to claim it. Nanchao being a powerful Thai kingdom in Southern China is still debatable. Ramkhamhaeng and Sukhothai being the first Thai kingdom is still a controversy. There is no evidence of the people in Sukhothai in that time that called themselves "Thai". "Thai" came to be in Ayothaya. Ayothaya was Mon-Khmer. According to one of the Thai historians, one of the first Europeans who came to Siam, asked some of the people in the Palace in Ayothaya who they were. They told him they called themselves " Thai". He later asked were there any "Thais" living somewhere else. They told him yes, Thai yai (big Thai) who lived near the Salawin River, and Thai noi (small Thai) who lived in the lower Mekong River. He said which Thai are you? They said "Thai noi". Now Thai Yai is referred to the Shan people of Burma and Thai Noi is referred to the Lao people of Laos and Lanna. Thai people of Ayothaya were a mixed group of people, but mostly Lao and Mon-Khmer. The Thai language is Lao and heavyly borrowed from Khmer with an admixture of Chinese and other languages. For example, the word gold, in Lao its called Kham and in Khmer Tong, so in Thai they call it tongkham. "Thai" became a lengua franca for the Ayuthaya region due to proximity to the port and it was booming economically. There were mixed of many races. But the ruling class of Thais are so bent on nationalism that they failed to see other facts. They think they are a pure race. They think they are a homogeneous race. "Thai" meaning free is a modern invention for Thailand, but in other Tai-Kadai languages it means people, i.e. "TaiDam" Black Tais from the dam river, Taideng (red tais) from the deng river, Tai puan, from muang puan, etc.

Warcy pyu people r the same burmese people : Indian history and Tang Chinese history well recorded the pyu kingdom in two names , pyu or Brama( bamar). There r 42 Pyu towns including nine garrison towns. Nanzhao kingdom attacked only one Pyu town n how could Pyu people disappear in history? It makes no sense! Pyu Bamar people rebuilt their kingdom again in Bagan; the name Bagan comes from Pyu gama or pugarama( means Pyu village) and the first founding father of Bagan kingdom anawrahta had his ancestors all Pyu ! No history of saying Anawratha from nanzhao. And no history of mass migration of people from nanzhao to Pyu to overthrow Pyu ! Colonial historian GH Luce made false Kyause theory of Burmese as late comers n separated from Pyu:

@@msnmorningglory1290 Wrong, 1st migrants to Burma were from India (setup Tagaung), 2nd migrants to Burma were from Gansu, Qinghai lake, China (Tibeto Burman, setup Pyu), 3rd migrants from Kunming of China, called Myrama and setup Pagan emperor. In early Pagan era, there were 4 languages using in Pagan, Pyu, Mon, Myanmar and Pali (Rajkumar/Yazakumara's stone written has 4 languages, still in Pagan). Later, Phy & Pali disappeared, there are still Mon but nowadays minority in Burma.

54living you are wrong .migration theory are just imagination of some historians and no evidence or proof: the archeological evidence show Tagaung is a Pyu city . Whether King of Tagaung come from Kapilavatsu ( now India n Nepal border ) or not ,still need some evidence and proof .
Pyu r the same Burmese people . Colonial historian Luce once made intended false history .Luce said he quote manshu records but it is also not included in manshu that Mang came into Pyu and became Burmese . Manshu only says nanzhao attacked one Pyu city and sacked and took Pyu in that town all . But Luce quote improperly that all Pyu were ruined and vacant area took by Mang . It is all about nonsense he had told . Besides Luce didn’t quote Chinese kings historical records of different era which clearly and precisely shows Pyu @ Brama ( bamar kingdom) . Chinese dynasty history records mention Burma as two names ; Pyu @ Brama ( BAMAR) country up to the late 13th century ( Late Bagan emperor before mongol invasion .
India history continuously called Burma as bramadesh till now and English France Portugal all come in contact with the country called them Burma .
Myanmar is just a literally transformation from Burma over a long time but orally we still call bamar pyi . Once in kongbaung dynasty the chief monk say we must write in original name of Brahma. Before Luce made false Kyaukse theory , all know that Pyu and Brama ( bamar) are the same.
Did you know how Bagan inscription show so many times the name of people and country as Brama @bamar . Find out yourself and read.
Mang ,a tribe ( a name called in Chinese) in nanzhao, has become Dai tribe ( just take a look at Chinese historian writings of nanzhao kingdom . Dai tribe speak tai Kauai language and not the same as Pyu or bamar which is a tibetoburman language.
Do you know During nanzhao collapse many of Mang (now Dai Shan came into Pyu or Burma area : and King Anawrahta had to build about 30 guard town to control influx. The central region of original Pyu or bamar population is still there when Mang or daishan entered and lived in border area and hilly area.

54living Rajakumar stone inscription is not written in 4 languages but 3 ;old Burmese ( Pyu early form ) , new Burmese ( Bagan fonts) , Pali , and mon or Khmer .did you know during early scripts writings of Pyu @ Brama , they used different ranges of script forms from early Brahmi script to late brahmi script . Bagan fonts is also like Pyu writings in kinbakone 20 Pyu gold leaves manuscripts writings.
Did you know one Egypt inscription written in two script for the same ethnic or people. During that times , they try to use many scripts to boast their knowledge. Pyu @ bamar r the same . Answer this : Bagan era use Pali language and so can you say there’s Pali ethnic.
And about mon , it can be more likely that Khmer language. Mon are just a tribe in Khmer empire and when Khmer evicted them out of dvaravati ( the only recorded ancient mon town, now in Thailand ) they entered into Pyu @ bamar area as war refugees and kind Anawrahta accepted well . That’s all . And mon has very few and limited writings evidence in dravavati compared to Pyu and Bagan Burmese ; professor micheal Aung thwin even point out mon dravati fonts is not the same as Bagan mon fonts and early Bagan writing is much earlier than mon . Razarkumar is not the first in Bagan font , now king Sawlu inscription and others earlier than Rajakumar are found by historians . So it is more likely that war refugees mon used Burmese fonts style in Bagan . ( note: today Burmese curved and circle fonts has changed only since Inwa Burmese kingdom period . And mon copied and used it now too . )
CO bleden who didn’t know Burmese language well decipher the old Burmese Pyu writings and even so he say Pyu words and Bagan words r very similar and they r the same tibetoburman cousin language : he say . But if he could knowBurmese language well , he would surely have said the two are the same . During colonial times there r some historians points out the false in Luce Kyaukse theory but politically their voice r not out.

"Who knows?", you asked. Well the people that still have the original language knows.
Let's clear up the big misconception that Thai means Tai.
When the Mon Dynasty of Siam changed it's name to Thailand in 1939, it officially declared that "Thai" means "free" because it was never colonized. The root word for Thai is "tHai" as "bail" or "ransom".
Whereas "Tai" came from the root word "tDai" which means "people of"
That being said Thai and Tai are two different words with two different root meanings. Thai and Tai are not interchangeable. Thailand does not mean Tailand because the Mon Dynasty didnot used another ethnic name to be the name of their Mon Kingdom. Mon were referred to as "siem" in Khmer history and that is why the Mon Kingdom was named Siam. Thai is just a new name that the Mon came up with in 1939.
Tai is a name evolved from regional names as in TaiDam are from the Bkack River, TaiDaeng from the Red River, TaiAssam are from Assam State and etc. In Tai palm leaves manuscripts they referred to themselves as Lao. For example TaiDam migrated south from the Black River and founded two cities named Lao Cai and Lao Phan which is now part of Vietnam.
Lao still use these two words but never as an ethnic name in the last 4000 years.

      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altai_Mountains
Altai Mountains means Mountains Of Gold because the golden grasslands resembles gold.
Another example is in the Liao Kingdom, Khitan or Khatai called themselves "Slave of" heaven. The word "kha" and "tai" still means "slave" and "of" in Lao.
TaiDam means "of Black River". In the past there was no group that called themselves just "Tai", it was always in a cognate form. e.g. TaiDaeng, TaiLue etc. Also there is a Lao group named PuTai meaning "of mountain".
Lao also share vocabularies with Old Chinese.

Etymology and History of Baci Ceremony
The Baci Ceremony is a blessing ceremony that is not from Buddhism nor Hinduism but rather Brahmanism which is proto Hinduism that is over 4000 years old. This is a relic of Brahmi and Lao ancestral worship tradition. Blessings of health, wealth and prosperity, that is why this ceremony is held with all of life's milestones.
Baci is a compound word, "ba" from the root word "to carry" and "ci" from the root word "radiance". The white string radiate from the pa kwuan "gathering spirit" centrepiece. The body is consist of 32 chakras and a kwuan for each. This is a ceremony to gather these spirits back and the string is to tie them on. Ba is to carry that is why people touch the string or elbow to signify carry and bless the intended person.
This is uniquely a Lao culture because the name Baci is Lao.
Also Lao groups that still exist in China pronounce the word for "ghost" as "bhee" which is a derivative of भूत "bhut". Modern Lao pronounce as "phee". This flip of the "b" and "p" sound is seen through such as Bhasa Pali in Lao is Phasa Bali.
It would be of interest to look deeper into this.

@@loogkaoneo2580 There are two types of Tamil connection for Khmers. One is the general Tamil connection with all languages of the world (going back 12,000 years to the times of Great Flood). I recommend that you watch the videos in the channel 'Tamil Chinthanaiyalar Peravai' (ruclips.net/user/tamilsantham) which reports some exciting new findings based on archaeological and anthropological evidences. The second is the (relatively modern) connection with the Chola empire. While the Khmer's and SEA's Tamil connection since 1000 AD is well understood, the modern connection could potentially go back even earlier.
By the way, the Tamil preposition 'Udaiya' or simply 'Udai' means 'of'. Consistently, for example, TaiLue would mean Lue's and TaiDam would mean Dam's, which they of course do. In Tamil however, 'udai' goes as a suffix (ennudai means my; avaludai means her; paattudai(th) thalaivan means the hero of the song; 'Udaiyar' means 'possessor').
Thank you for enlightening me that the words Thai and tai are separate. The Tamil word 'thai' (with the longer vowel) means mother and the Tamil word 'thai' (with the shorter vowel) refers to a Tamil month (around January and February). The Tamil word 'thaiyal' means 'young girl'. I would appreciate if you tell me if the word 'Thai' exists in Lao for long or it was coined anew when the word 'Siam' was replaced; and also, the meaning of 'thai' in the Lao language. Also do Lao and Khmer languages share lots of vocabulary (I think Lao people are more Chinese and Khmers more Tamil, but the Indochina being a great melting bot, both groups have a significant amount of the other ethnic component).

Why did the Khmer dynasty disappear from history?
Why did Lavo, the creator of Ayothaya, who was a relative or ally of Nakhon Wat, who had never fought a war, the slaves and kill Khom Woraman Lavo, Ayothaya immediately raised an army to attack Nakhon Wat.
After the slavery a man called Sweet Melon became king, and Nakhon Wat progressed to the point of collapse. Then the Khmer people could not build or repair the stone castle again. Culture declined and compared to the contemporary kingdom after Nakhon Wat "Ayothaya and the neighborhood" and Ayothaya has great buildings with high art. Each neighborhood is almost no different from the forest people hiding in a bamboo fence without any buildings comparable to Nakhon Wat. For hundreds of years, the Khmer people have been weak and defeated.

According to Khmer history written on the stonewalls in the temple of Bayon, modern Thai people were Sayam(Tai)or Siem, or Siam of southern Chinese. They were refugees, warriors, and bandits, who migrated to Khmer(Cambodia) territory. Of course, Cambodia landmass of today is no where close to the time of the Khmer empire. Through the centuries, the Siem adopted Khmer language , religion, and cultures. They have became among the Khmer populations. By the way, Muay Thai was Khmer invention, not Thai. When the internal politcal strife within the Khmer Empire broke out. The Siem fought for independence of their own. Khmer empire was devided, the outcome was emergence of a new kingdom, Siem or Siam. Sometime in 1940's Siam became Thailand. Today's Thai populations will deny many parts of their history. Their history curriculum taught in school and institutions are very deviated from the true historical facts. This misleading have created much anonymousity toward the Khmer/Cambodia. This is why Thailand has been hostile toward Cambodia, considering Thai and Cambodian were one time one family.

Chamnap Cheng khmer were Mahayana Buddhist and Hindu not Theravada Buddhist which most Thai are so Thai only got the Hindu part from khmer. In Thai language and in Khmer language there’s Thai and most song that were sang in Khmer court in the 18th and 19th century were sang in Thai. We do except that Khmer and other culture have influence us otherwise we wouldn’t mention it in documentaries. It’s actually quite sad how Cambodia ended up like what it is now when you compare to the Khmer had archive in the past. After Angkor fell khmer art resembles Thai and not those of Angkor. Tall temple towers building traditions were not continued. After Ayutthaya fell thai still manage to take back lands and push the Burmese out but khmer couldn’t do the same and considering how great they were it’s just tragic.

@Da Phetdala The word "tai" is shared with Mongolian and Lao since ancient times. Tai simply means "of" and it is used with a region or place name. E.G. TaiDam "of Black River", TaiDaeng "of Red River" etc.
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altai_Mountains
Altai "alt is gold and tai is of" Mountains meaning Mountains Of Gold because the rolling golden grassland resembles gold.
Yuan Dynasty that ruled China in the 13th century was Mongol. All these "Tai" kingdoms are 13th century. There is no such thing as Tai Yuan that came down to create Lanna. Yuan is Mongol.
Chakri Dynasty of Siam came up with this Thai identity. That is why they adopted the Khmer "R". Words such as love "huk" becomes "ruk". The word us=hao=rao and this is to hide the fact that 60 percent of Siam is ethnic Lao before they sacked LanXang and enslaved Lao people in Issan. The Thai indentity is to create a rift between Lao people of Siam and LanXang that got gathered up into Issan.
