I have driven more 4020's in my life than any other tractor. My favourite memory was when i was in tenth grade a farmer needed a driver to run one of his two 4020's for field work. I was in heaven. One tractor pulled 5-16 and the other a 6-16 plow. From sun up to sun down. Great memories from a great tractor.
Just discovered this video and WOW, does it bring back wonderful memories from childhood. My dad had a 4010 and and a 4020 and both were hardworking tractors. Yours looks like it just drove off the showroom floor and only someone who grew up with JD's could truly appreciate how beautiful it truly is.
My very first tractor was a 71 model 4020 that I bought in September of 1977. I was 17 years old and started with 100 acres. 50 in corn and 50 in double cropped wheat and soybeans. That thing would pull 4 18 inch bottoms in 5th gear and never break a sweat.
I never realized that how old my dad's tractor was. When we moved to a new farm it was already there, not new. 20 years later he was still driving it every day at work. He changed the oil 3 times more than needed to be changed....at the weekends, on his own time. He wouldn't let it sit overnight, dirty.
Great job of plowing, your plow is set perfectly . Colters set perfectly, furrow edges are square and crisp, no dirt on spilling from the bottoms to the top of the ground. Just a pleasure to see the job done properly. You are plowing at the perfect depth, all around a super job!
And that is how it was done (although I thought he was in 4th) and the video was also excellent, NO stupid music to cover up the sound of the tractor, NO stupid commentary, NO clouds of black smoke, NOTHING but the tractor and plow doing as they were made to do.
Covered a lot of ground with the same set up - we had duals on out of furrow side. Great video - lots of memories from making that dirt fly. There is nothing quiet like that smell of freshly plowed ground mixing with diesel exhaust. Thank You!
I was 12 when a 4020 like this one with that plow pulled onto our farm, What a machine that thing was. I never drove it until 2 years later and I was in heaven!
I’m jealous!! Takes me back. Loved plowing with our 4020. Equipped with m&ws and big turbo and straight pipe. Only downfall was a hiniker cab and after a day you heard it all night!
I remember the first night my father in law let me plow. He had laid off the lands in the daylight so everything was ready. He showed me how to close the furrows and then turned me loose. The lights on the 4020 weren’t the best and I remember losing track of which end of the field I was at. With no til it’s a lost art.
Fine job and nice toys. Our neighbor pulled 4 bottoms with his 4020. You can go a little deeper and a little more speed will help roll the sod better and help you through wet spots. We had a cheap 1130 Massey Ferguson because we couldn't afford John Deere. It did have power. It pulled 5/16's too easy. It must have been turned up pretty good as it could pull in hi 1st and throw the sod too far if you let it. Good times.
1130 MF perkins turbo had 120 hp. They were powerful good long lasting tractors also with closed center hydraulics similar to JD. Better tractor than most people knew. Just did not have the vast dealer network and resources like Deere.
@@arvbergstedt3303 I came upon an 1130 MF one day stranded in the road. It had come out of a field too quickly and when in bounced crossing the road side ditch it cracked the tractor in two right at the flywheel. Bad day for that farmer.
Makes me miss running the older smaller equipment. Especially and open station tractor. Our farm still has a 4020 diesel and a 3010 gas we will use on a rare occasion. Awesome video !
This might be the first plowing video I have seen with the plow actually adjusted level. They ususally have the front deep so it looks impressive and tail is way up.
Does your property produce corn, is the soil being plowed sandy or clayey, does it have good fertility or does it require a large amount of fertilizer per hectare?

In certain conditions a 5-14 will stall a 4020 if an integral plow with good clutch it'll pull the front end off the ground in that situation all you can do is cut throttle and kill the engine...

Me to great memories 🙂
Same here. There were two on the first farm I worked on. I have one of my own now.
Seriously??? Maybe two inches deep like this guy.. Get an Allis 190xt it’ll plow ten inches deep in road gear

Oh my. This really takes me back. I’ve put in many hours on a rig just like this one.

Thank you! I've been plowing since I was about 13, lots of practice, frustration and learning how to get it right.
Tyre pressure is to high
The 4020 was always one of my favorite deere tractors
And that is how it was done (although I thought he was in 4th) and the video was also excellent, NO stupid music to cover up the sound of the tractor, NO stupid commentary, NO clouds of black smoke, NOTHING but the tractor and plow doing as they were made to do.

It’s kind of like the smell of creosote and diesel exhaust you get when you’re close to a railroad on a hot day.
My most favorite tractor, I think one of the most universal tractors ever built. Back in the day when we farmed I loved plowing with a 4020
That’s the correct way to open a field, bye throwing the furrow into the field. Made that 4020 grunt a little. Great video, I miss those day’s 👍

Precious memories. I'm 38 now but rode many many rounds as a child in the soybean fields with my pawpaw on the 4020 as my daddy manned the 3020.
I have put a lot of hours on 4020’s . Still do and love every minute of it!!! Awesome tractors!!!!
They are definitely very handy tractors to have around.
Man that old 404 engine sounds sweet!
That is one nice bit of mold boarding 1350 1450s are very good plows we have 4 6-16 and 4 5-16

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the 1130 was a 130 hp tractor. The 4020 was rated at a 95 hp.

Nice outfit. We had an 806 Farmall that was a little stronger l think the torque ampfiler gave the 806 some advantage. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a stock (naturally aspirated) 4020, to! 👍 Nice, level job of matching dirt!
Thanks! Its a great plow and is set correctly
Been there, done that and wish I was doing it again.
Good looking tractor, pulls that 5 bottom well, ground looks pretty compacted ..
It was, cows were on it. Last years wheat stubble.
Makes me miss running the older smaller equipment. Especially and open station tractor. Our farm still has a 4020 diesel and a 3010 gas we will use on a rare occasion. Awesome video !
Thank you!
Back in the good old days!
Plowed thousands of acres with a 4020 and a 145 plow. Those coulters were the best ever.
They do a fantastic job
Love that power shift
Me too!
We had a 1960 3010 diesel that pulled 4 16s. My dad sold that tractor in 1980 for 5k. Had the original clutch. Don't remember how many hours.
I have the same one it was the first tractor I drove on my own on the farm
That's a nice tractor
This might be the first plowing video I have seen with the plow actually adjusted level. They ususally have the front deep so it looks impressive and tail is way up.
I know, I see alot of plows being 'dragged' through the dirt. Many just do not have the knowledge on how to properly set a plow.
My dream tractor
Nice video!
The classic of classics.
I am impressed. 4020 pulling 5 bottoms. I have always thought of 4020 as a 4 bottom tractor. 👍 - Doug in Iowa
As I recall, Iowa soil pulled one bottom less than other soils.
deernutOO Yeah ... good point ... 4020 was a 4 bottom tractor in NW Iowa 👍 -Doug in Iowa
I farmed in north central Missouri and I pulled 5-16’s with my 4020. 4th gear and did a fine job.
I pull a 4-16 trailing plow with my 4020 in fifth gear. We are on hilly ground with a variety of soils.
I have an F145H 4/16 that I pull in certain conditions
I pull 5 bottom 151 Ford plows with my 4020. All I’ve plowed with on that tractor.
Back when you could fix things.
Might please you to know RUclips is still pushing your video that's how I ended up seeing it. 👍
We pulled 6 bottom 16" all the time with our 4020
In sand
Now there is some hard Plowing, but then again sod is always hard Plowing
Clearly a farmer who knows how to set up his mold board correctly. Correct depth!
Thank you!
The soil must be a bit lighter in my area. When new, most farmers around here pulled 6x16's with the 4020's.
Such a satisfying video to watch, but holy cow you had me cringing when you were close to the plow. LOL Be safe out there!
Very nice tractor
My Farmall B does the same in 3rd.gear on a lot less fuel.
Farmall B can't pull a settin' hen off her nest!
I farmed with 3 different 4020 tractors and they outlasted everything else
That's fun to watch l don't care who you are. Thanks
Does your property produce corn, is the soil being plowed sandy or clayey, does it have good fertility or does it require a large amount of fertilizer per hectare?
I agree Mathew I drove s 4020 discing and chisel plowing
Serviço muito bem feito lindo lindo parabéns Santo André SP BRASIL
Good morning, how is the weather in your city today, has it been raining and is it very cold?
Amen!
long live the 4020! i own 2
Looks like 4th gear to me.
Wow, that thing sounds great. Do you have it turned up or bored out, or is that pretty much stock?
It has a fresh engine, stock but the pump is turned all the way up. I will be adding a turbo in the future.
I pulled 5 16 with my 4020
After me shall come a farmer, tell I too have known.
Just because it can, doesn’t mean you should

I have a late model 4020 and I can plow pretty much any type of ground with 5 bottom 151 Ford plows. They pull relatively easy.
I drove my share of them the only thing that I didn't like was the heat an the cold
Thats my only gripe with it
That 4020 will pull a 6 bottom with no problem, unless there's something serious wrong with it.
In certain conditions a 5-14 will stall a 4020 if an integral plow with good clutch it'll pull the front end off the ground in that situation all you can do is cut throttle and kill the engine...
In sand
BULL
I've seen with my own eyes and was riding on a 4010 diesel, that was pulling 5 16 with weighted front
@@fokkerd3red618 3" in the ground
Are the discs on the plow cutting the soil to make it easier for the blades to turn the soil over?
They are there to cut the residue to help keep from plugging and making a clean cut for the furrow.
Going to blow it up
