- Hail Jemima were a rock band from Manchester, England. Wish I’d Learnt To Cry was the band’s first demo, recorded as a three-piece at The Cutting Rooms in Manchester, 1995. Written by singer Rob Higham, the song features guitars by Rob and also Gords Smith, bass by Andy Reeves and session drumming by Steve Tinning. The band were later joined by three other permanent members, Ant Reeves on drums, Andy (Singo) Singleton on keyboards and Steve Sinecola on vocals and sax. Wish I’d Learnt To Cry is one of only two demos featuring the original line-up of Rob, Gords and Andy - the other is Northern Lad, also recorded at The Cutting Rooms in 1995, though percussion is also provided by Ant.
WISH I’D LEARNT TO CRY
(R. Higham)
Fireside boy who never knew
What I wanted to say to you
Packed up his life in one hand
Wish I’d said goodbye
A friend called Jack took him along
Led him to a dark and distant song
Reminiscing of days gone past
Wish I’d learnt to cry
Another heartache made in Heaven
A head in ‘83 man, back in Devon
Jack and Mary don’t cloud my view
Wish I’d said goodbye
You can’t lay down your own ground rules
Can’t tell you who are the fools
You’re reading me, man in black and white
Wish I’d learnt to go
I wish I’d learnt to cry
I wish I’d learnt to cry
I wish I’d learnt to cry
I wish I’d learnt to cry cry cry
Do you miss me?
I’m not here
Do you miss me?
This time of year
Do you miss me?
It’s cold outside
Do you miss
Miss
Me?
