Just loved my Dad picking me up Major Matt Mason in the early 70s on clearance. So yeah I would love to see a closer approximation of that figure line.
I've been waiting for some sort of info on when this set would be offered. I wonder what happened? Thanks for doing this video! Awesome to get a closer look at them
I'm 56 , So I was lucky to have the Matt Mason line of toys and loved them in the late 60's ! I also of course had " the Real " GI Joe's , Big Jim's and vehicles. By 77 I was too old for Star Wars etc..So to me the 12 " action figures were the right stuff growing up ! I would love if they reproduced the original , these are too modern for me. Thanks for the memories !
In 2016, there was a kickstarter line, Amazing Heroes, made from a company Called Fresh Monkey Fiction where they made figures done in the 3.75" Secret Wars sculpt style, with the painted on details. The line featured various public domain golden age heroes, like Stardust, Black Terror & Silver Streak and creator owned indie characters such as Jon Sable, Nexus, E-Man & Madman and of note they made a figure based on Captain Action, who would fit in nicely with these guys.
A cousin had the Major Matt Mason figures and sets and equipment. My parents were of the "you'll grow out of it so you don't need it now" school of thought. I'm 50 and buy action figures. I guess I won that argument.
I think that's a really neat idea, combining those three into their own action universe. Now they need the rest of the Wolf Pack and Dr. Steele. Matt Mason seems like a pre-bionic Steve Austin, and Pulsar seems like an alternative universe version. They need a space vehicle/disaster in hyperspace playset too!
I just read an article online the other day and though I'm not sure how accurate it is there is mention of Mattel trying to bring these lines back which if true would be pretty cool, that would be smart of them since nostalgia sells
I feel like a toy snob from the 80s. I was born in '71. The 70s consisted of Mego, Adventure Team, I had a Pulsar, and a Six Million Dollar Man. But my love affair started with Adventure People...3¾" action figures. Then Star Wars, with the ultimate 3¾" figures, GI Joe ARAH. No other scale in the 80s interested me because the articulation on all of the other toys was based on 5poa, introduced 10+ years prior with Adventure People. So, not having liked the design of Secret Wars, I don't know if I would jump at these today. The whole selling point of Big Jim was his mission packs and adventure sets/ vehicles. Major Matt Mason does not even have a helmet. I either want these as collectible figures, highly detailed, or action figures with the accessories that made them fun.
I like these. I do hope these do come out at some point. Like you Matt Mason was just a bit before my time. I remember Pulsar, but never had him. And somehow I completely missed out on Big Jim. I did have some Secret Wars figures as a kid, but they were a bit before I really got into super-heroes. All that said I'd love to have this line. Start with these three guys and add on the other characters as they go. Hopefully someday it'll happen. Maybe once Mattel gets that Tom Hanks "Matt Mason" movie made...
Another awesome video, good sir. Definitely makes me want this set all the more (if that’s possible). I’m more of a “Big Jim” traditionalist and would’ve liked to see the big lug in his track suit or in his even more iconic Olympic speedos (with his gold medal, of course) though I get why they went with The P.A.C.K. as it fits more with the “action” theme. My thanks for “taking one for the team” and over-paying on eBay so that they will now see the retail light of day. 🙂
Big Jim was my favorite as a kid. The only problem was the legs would break easily. The hip socket would Crack. One Christmas I got the Wolfpack Big Jim and Dr. Steel plus the camper. Hours of Big fun in the 70s. Thanks for the memories.
Just an update, not sure if anyone else has mentioned this. This set is being released as a 2022 San Diego ComiCon exclusive set, so I guess mystery is over in terms of what ever happened to this. Great review as always, Brian, and apparently you really got a super early preview of this way ahead of time. Awesome!👍
This was great as usual. Personally I'd love to see reproductions of these figure's, especially Big Jim. He was a major favorite of my childhood. I was about 8 year's old when big Jim was released so I was of course completely fascinated with him and his sportsman concept. Such a great review! Thanks!
I've been waiting for these to get some kind of official release, but Mattel Creations stuff is usually very pricey. I'm surprised they haven't pulled the trigger yet. They released a Skeletor in the style of jumbo machinder Shogun Warriors last year and it was an instant sell-out at $350.
No b.s. during coof lockdown I filled notebooks with designs/strategies on how I'd bring back Big Jim and other 70s toys as well as continuing other lines of 90s era figures.
I hope they come out officially...I'm a die-hard 3.75 guy, and they look great. But it does feel like a market test and they lost their nerve...they could have sprung for new molds but didn't, and that's what leads me to believe it was a test. All 3 properties could easily be a shared Mattel-verse with a lot of great possibilities. Hope your wallet didn't get too badly singed...
I honestly think the Pulsar and Big Jim both translate really well to that scale. The characters fit the style of the sculpt. The MMM though just looks really out of place (much like MMM's jumbo pal, Captain Laser). For me, that series will always be fantastic vehicles and bendy figures. Kudos once again for another great video!
I know I had some Big Jim toys growing up, but I do not have as many fond memories of them as I do of Pulsar. I don't know why, but Pulsar stuck with me more. But, that said, those Jack Kirby boxes make me want them again now. I do not want re-imagined, redesigned figures, I want the real thing. Pulsar rules!!
This is a cool concept and it's nice to see some characters that haven't been redone over and over again since the 80's. I do wish they would have included more articulation though and made them in 1:18th scale (I think those Secret Wars figures were a little bigger but I may be remembering them incorrectly).
First, thank you for doing this video.I really want to these figures and have been regularly checking Mattel Creations for any sign of an update. Second, totally bummed that Pixel Dan doesn’t have any updated info on this exclusive.
I do remember Pulsar(well the ads on TV), but Big Jim and Major Matt Mason. Not at all. Mason looked like a pretty kool toy. I read on line he came out in 1966. So I would have never had one, because I came out in 66 too. HA! Great Vid man!!
I'm of two minds about the 3.75" treatment-- like you, I have no attachment in particular to the Marvel Legends look, and I'd prefer a full-sized Big Jim renaissance. On the other hand, it's the perfect size for nostalgic desk display, as proved by Super 7's recent tribute to the Shogun Warriors Godzilla toy..
I would like to see Mattel reproduce the original figures. I hope you do a video on my favorite figure from the 70s and from Mattel KRUSHER. Now that is a figure that needs to be reproduced.
I loved playing with my Major Matt Mason collection as a kid. Matt was ripped right out of the headlines for kids my age. If Mattel released a Major Matt Mason figure, I would buy it in a heart beat. This time give him a solid plastic body where the paint doesn't peal off and the wire in the joints break.
Very interesting video indeed, thanks for posting. I was never fortunate enough to own any of these figures originally back in the day, but the Pulsar figure definitely has caught my interest after watching today, and I look forward to seeing your video take on the line sometime in 2022. I just love the transparent body / organs - certainly different, but similar to the Henshin Cyborg Muton figure in some ways.
These are awesome! I loved the P.A.C.K. back in the day. Only Bulletman outdid them (and in my role-playing was on the same team. And Pulsar was mesmerizing the 1st time seen, even if I don't recall having or playing with him. Matt Mason was captivating in his own way, since he existed only as a great illustrated full page (-double page?) add in so many of my yardsale comics. I'd love if this line did 3 packs of various other 70's and 60's heroes. Especially so Pulsar, Steve Austin and the Atomic Man (think thats the name, his G.I. Joe double) can finally have their showdown.
I can’t help but wonder if Mattel was thinking of making a toy line to compete with Super 7’s Re:Action Kenner-style product, using internal existing I.P. s. I don’t think it would do well, frankly, because the Re:Action line has a very comfortable ‘play’ factor built in. You can have Jem and the Holograms encounter Freddy Kruger and the Alien. That’s fun. The Marvel Secret Wars figures were just awkward lumps that could barely stand. So if Mattel went forward, how quickly would it burn out? Major Matt Mason had 4 characters, 2 aliens and Captain Lazer. Big Jim P.A.C.K. had 4 or 5 and was Pulsar 2 figures? Not a large pool to dip from. I guess there are other lines in the vault that could be shoehorned in. But then I had another thought. What if the entire purpose of this strange item was simply to renew or re-assert the trademarks and copyrights of those properties?
My View: needs; more articulation, changeable outfits, complete teams (Major Matt Mason & Big Jim and the P.A.C.K.), all the handheld, and maybe alternate hands for those items. *Good Video Thumbs UP.*
I would LOVE if they did a wolf pack in 3 3/4 with accessories and vehicles! Or even a 6 inch linch with good sculpts and articulation. I would throw money at that!
My first question is would they be scaled at least in seven inch like flash gordon, the phantom, ming the merciless from neca and fully articulated with changeable head's, hand's and planty of accessories with one more thing an origin story comic book and I'll be all in on this line of figures sign me up.
I've seen stories about this being made for the Mattel Creations website but abandoned for some reason. I have to wonder if these are from an official sample production run or if the factory just did an unauthorized production run. BTW, there is connection to two other Mattel lines. In Masters of the Universe He-Man's mother was an astronaut from Earth. During the MOTU Classics era she was retro-actively made part of Matt Mason's team. The figure even included a mission patch sticker that had her name along with the four traditional characters. This one I'm not as clear on, but Big Jim is connected to Max Steel in some way. I've seen him listed as uncle and I've seen him listed as father. One is correct but I'm not clear on which. Either way, I hope these get released and more follow but I'd really like to see all done in Masters of the Universe Classics format with the Four Horsemen handling the sculpts.
Big Jim is Max's dad. Jim was called "Kid Acero" in Mexico and South America, that translates to Kid Steel, so it runs deep. Didn't know about He-Man's mum tho! That's neat.
That's a great set! I would definitely make some shelf space for those and would love if it did well enough that they did the whole P.A.C.K. Looking forward to the episode on Pulsar, as I have no memory of him at all.
When I first heard about this, I guessed that this was Mattel trying to protect the copyrights to these characters. Your video was the first to showcase them (I was not aware that they used the Secret Wars figure style for them). My guess is that these are a means of testing the waters to see if there is any interest in bringing any of these properties back. I know that I would be interested in seeing P.A.C.K. figures (I had a couple when I was younger) and Pulsar as well. Hopefully if Mattel decides to really bring them back, it will be in either the Big Jim size, but I would accept a six inch version as well.
I would prefer reproductions of the originals but these are nice display packaged figures, I also remember using Pulsar as Six Million Dollar Mans Enemy too. If possible I would love to see Mattel do eight inch reproductions of any of the 3 figures too.
I’m interested if they do them like current Hasbro/Mattel action figures. They should do them as if the original figures were shrunk down to 1/12 scale. Otherwise do complete recreations with the original packaging artwork.
I think this is/was/maybe will be, a great nod to these Mattel figures. I have all of the original figures in my collection and look forward to the opportunity to add these when available.
Loved MMM, so it's good to see him back, but I would prefer his original proportions and size. And, if there's ever an official release, they have to give him his jetpack! It is simply one of the best toy accessories ever!
This new figures are not good, personally I didn't like them, the figures back in the day were a way much better. They trying to use the nostalgia and make us buy this toys. I personally had Pulsar and all the Big Jim back in the late 70's early 80's and were amazing,
I've been on a 1/12 scale collecting frenzy, lately. Would like to see Matt Mason and all of the Big Jim team in 1/12 scale, Marvel Legends sized. Soft goods are preferred, but nice sculpting would be ok, again like Marvel Legends or G.I. Joe Classified series.
pulsar was marketed as the ultimate man of action. as a kid i thought this was a great toy but even at 4 years old i could not figure out how having a transparent chest made you the ultimate man of action. i still cant figure this one out. any ideas?
Honestly, I would only want the Big Jim figure. I would only buy the one figure from a store. If I had to buy it online or as a three figure set, It will be a hard no. I remember Big Jim from advertisements in old comic books.
I love everything about these but the scale and the bucks. To fit in with modern figures on the market they should be six inch or 1:12 scale figures. If I had it my way they'd be Mego scale with cloth goods. But if they did these at a 1:12 scale with Mezco style gear and soft goods they would have been instant sold out collectors items.
I don't get it. People that like the 80s style action figures won't know these characters and people that do know these characters wouldn't want them in this style.
Personally I would love to see reproductions of the PACK, but if they made the entire team on this style I would grab it. I still have my original PACK figures minus Dr. Steel and the BEAST truck. I'm a sucker for nostalgic toys.
Being a 70s kid from the UK all three of these were beyond my radar when they were originally released so to be honest don't hold any nostalgia value for me, saying that I'd love a Pulsar if I could find some room, I've reached that stage now that I suppose every collector does where the vast amount of the collection resides in boxes.
This is blurry but I can vividly remember owning a horse, the yellow chopper, the big adventure bus and the spy dude who could change faces. I wouldn’t be interested in buying any of these designs that you showed. It’s more likely I’d buy a set with one of those iconic vehicles.
had Big Jim had pulsar had a hand me down Matt at like 5 years old.. i want this set so bad just to have on the shelf to say it started here!!! not sure what i think about the secret wars body..
I inherited a few Matt mason guys and equipment from my uncle back in the mid 70s, I loved them.
Just loved my Dad picking me up Major Matt Mason in the early 70s on clearance. So yeah I would love to see a closer approximation of that figure line.
I've been waiting for some sort of info on when this set would be offered. I wonder what happened? Thanks for doing this video! Awesome to get a closer look at them
I'd love to know myself, I bit the bullet just to hopefully start the conversation.
I love the Big Jim! I know it's a different company, but If they did a Bullet Man "The Human Bullet" in this style, I'd be all over it!!
a Super Joe adventure team done in this style would be amazing.
that big jim/jack kirby box screams for the whole wolf pack. would preorder in a blurry haze
Had all 3 of them in the 70s, I'm 55 now.
I'm 56 , So I was lucky to have the Matt Mason line of toys and loved them in the late 60's ! I also of course had " the Real " GI Joe's , Big Jim's and vehicles. I had a Big Jeff Rhino Hunt set as a boy. Nice to see someone likes the line!

I contributed to that kickstarter and got the Golden Age Daredevil figure.
Really need to go back and get more. That was a great collection.
A cousin had the Major Matt Mason figures and sets and equipment. My parents were of the "you'll grow out of it so you don't need it now" school of thought. I'm 50 and buy action figures. I guess I won that argument.
Doing the weird videos is my favorite appeal to this channel another amazing job another amazing video
Come on Mattel, bring them out!
I just read an article online the other day and though I'm not sure how accurate it is there is mention of Mattel trying to bring these lines back which if true would be pretty cool, that would be smart of them since nostalgia sells
BIG JIM!!! Truely a great hero of nostalgia.
agreed.
Didnt realize these weren't released. Also they're gonna need some big monsters to fight like Krusher & Gre-Gory.
I remember seeing these on Instagram before. I soo wish these got produced! , great video as always Brian!
Happy New Year!
I remember an older cousin having Pulsar! My earliest toy memories: Gabriel Lone Ranger, Shogun Warriors Godzilla & Mazinga, and Stretch Armstrong.
the misleadingly named "Big Jim", who was always so much shorter than Action Man and Steve Austin :-P
At least he had Dr Steel his own height...
But what about them small fry G.I. Joes? You're gonna give them a complex or something.
They look great. Just like the originals much better. Thanks for sharing Brother in Vintage Toys 😀👍♥️🇨🇦🇺🇸🇬🇧🌎🎉🎉🎉🎉👏👏🎉🎉🎉🎉💯
Oh man...PULSAR!!! 😍
I like these. I do hope these do come out at some point. Like you Matt Mason was just a bit before my time. I remember Pulsar, but never had him. And somehow I completely missed out on Big Jim. Happy new year and thx for the vintage, thx for the retro.I would set for these 3 figures for now but yes bring back the old ones eventually.
Some great packaging for sure. Thanks for the thoughts!
Great to see these. I doubt it's about releasing new figures and MORE about protecting the IP of each toyline.
Good phraseology
The space guy looks cool
Another awesome video, good sir. Definitely makes me want this set all the more (if that’s possible).
I’m more of a “Big Jim” traditionalist and would’ve liked to see the big lug in his track suit or in his even more iconic Olympic speedos (with his gold medal, of course) though I get why they went with The P.A.C.K. as it fits more with the “action” theme.
My thanks for “taking one for the team” and over-paying on eBay so that they will now see the retail light of day. 🙂
Totally agree about the PACK figures. I'd place a pre-order immediately!
My wallet would be spinning
Big Jim was my favorite as a kid.
The only problem was the legs would break easily. The hip socket would Crack. One Christmas I got the Wolfpack Big Jim and Dr. Steel plus the camper. Hours of Big fun in the 70s. Thanks for the memories.
I'm looking to recreate Dr. Steel in 1/6th scale, and teaming him up with Miss Fear, and playing into the, "Is he friend or foe," as I tell stories.
Just an update, not sure if anyone else has mentioned this. This set is being released as a 2022 San Diego ComiCon exclusive set, so I guess mystery is over in terms of what ever happened to this. Great review as always, Brian, and apparently you really got a super early preview of this way ahead of time. Awesome!👍
Hey thanks for posting that, this video got me quoted in the New York times this week, what a rush!
They did 2 more color variations that sold out as well
No b.s. during coof lockdown I filled notebooks with designs/strategies on how I'd bring back Big Jim and other 70s toys as well as continuing other lines of 90s era figures.
I hope they come out officially...I'm a die-hard 3.75 guy, and they look great. I had the original Pulsar as a kid... I don't know where it went eventually!
Always Good!, Thanks for keeping it 70s.
I'd love to see the whole Wolf Pack return in some fashion!
I honestly think the Pulsar and Big Jim both translate really well to that scale. The characters fit the style of the sculpt. The MMM though just looks really out of place (much like MMM's jumbo pal, Captain Laser). For me, that series will always be fantastic vehicles and bendy figures. Pulsar rules!!
I'm looking at my 1970s pulsar as I see this video.
I have Big Josh, friend of Big Jim, action figures. I hope to see replicas of Big Jim & Josh in 8 inches.
I was hoping Mattel would add Jim to their Retro Action line a while back.
This is a cool concept and it's nice to see some characters that haven't been redone over and over again since the 80's. I do wish they would have included more articulation though and made them in 1:18th scale (I think those Secret Wars figures were a little bigger but I may be remembering them incorrectly).
You would be correct they scaled more with Kenner's super powers than with star wars
I like them, I wud like to se also they do another figures from the big Jim series
I was so hoping for more of these and a Lazervette to go along with them!
First, thank you for doing this video.I really want to these figures and have been regularly checking Mattel Creations for any sign of an update. Second, totally bummed that Pixel Dan doesn’t have any updated info on this exclusive.
Interesting stuff, after watching this I would pick up a set if they became available.
Got a Dr Steel in there, somewhere? Always had a soft spot for Mr Clean.
I do remember Pulsar(well the ads on TV), but Big Jim and Major Matt Mason. Not at all. Mason looked like a pretty kool toy. I read on line he came out in 1966. So I would have never had one, because I came out in 66 too. HA! Great Vid man!!

A great video as usual. Is there anything in the rest of the packaging? Looks like a lot of extra space there.

6 inch scale Big Jim would be great, naturally the camper and Kung Fu Dojo too

That's a great set!
I would definitely make some shelf space for those and would love if it did well enough that they did the whole P.A.C.K.
Looking forward to the episode on Pulsar, as I have no memory of him at all.
I thought the big jim should have been at lease 8' inch .
I'm intrigued by the box design. Are the any accessories in there or are they just sleeves for the bubble cards?
When I first heard about this, I guessed that this was Mattel trying to protect the copyrights to these characters. Your video was the first to showcase them (I was not aware that they used the Secret Wars figure style for them).

Great Video! Top Shelf!
Glad you enjoyed it
They look good. Are they as articulated as the originals ?
I would prefer reproductions of the originals but these are nice display packaged figures, I also remember using Pulsar as Six Million Dollar Mans Enemy too. If possible I would love to see Mattel do eight inch reproductions of any of the 3 figures too.
I’m interested if they do them like current Hasbro/Mattel action figures. They should do them as if the original figures were shrunk down to 1/12 scale. Otherwise do complete recreations with the original packaging artwork.
Happy New Year!!
Matt Mason is the technically the first action figure. Then came g I Joe. I know it was the first thing in my collection. 😝
These are gonna be SDCC exclusives this year
Yeah, I got interviewed by the new York Times about this set.
Straight up repros all the way!!!
Cool I had all of them. Grate video!
I would rather see straight up reproductions and would love to see Six Million Dollar man back too
This new figures are not good, personally I didn't like them, the figures back in the day were a way much better. They trying to use the nostalgia and make us buy this toys. I personally had Pulsar and all the Big Jim back in the late 70's early 80's and were amazing,
Are these out??? I want Pulsar. I still have my vintage Pulsar.
Hi Brian, Mattels Pulsar was 14 inches tall. While Kenners Six Million Dollar Man was 13 inches tall.
On the sides and the front yes the colors should POP.
The back I can understand it being defused somewhat.
That would be cool!
I need 8 inch Mego style Ghostbusters figures to go with that eaglemoss ecto I'm building I also desire new Micronauts.
pulsar was marketed as the ultimate man of action. as a kid i thought this was a great toy but even at 4 years old i could not figure out how having a transparent chest made you the ultimate man of action. i still cant figure this one out. any ideas?
Honestly, I would only want the Big Jim figure. I would only buy the one figure from a store. If I had to buy it online or as a three figure set, It will be a hard no.
I remember Big Jim from advertisements in old comic books.
I had a Pulsar with a collapsed lung...
Am I gonna have to make my own bootleg? When?
I love everything about these but the scale and the bucks. To fit in with modern figures on the market they should be six inch or 1:12 scale figures. If I had it my way they'd be Mego scale with cloth goods. But if they did these at a 1:12 scale with Mezco style gear and soft goods they would have been instant sold out collectors items.
I don't get it. People that like the 80s style action figures won't know these characters and people that do know these characters wouldn't want them in this style.
5-6 inch has been the standard action figure size since the 2002.
What scale/ht are they?
i think it would have been better if these figures were 12-13 inches. The packaging is nice, but the sizes of these guys are very underwhelming.
Where are these been sold
I pick up a set, I wud like to c them reissue big Jim wolf pack set. Matt mason wud b cool also
love it
This is blurry but I can vividly remember owning a horse, the yellow chopper, the big adventure bus and the spy dude who could change faces.
