    Audio design is such an under appreciated part of game design. Halo 3 still has some of the best audio design I've ever heard. It sounds absolutely sensational through expensive headphones. The clarity, punch and ability to pinpoint where everything is beyond most modern games I've played, especially now when we have simulated surround sound which just ends up making things sound more muffled and less realistic.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 10 месяцев назад +4

      I think audio mixing has gotten more lazy in modern titles. Halo was well thought out and carefully mixed for proper balance. That and definitely quality sound effects and quality recordings. The sound effects also just sound "right" for what they represent, I prefer them over any remastered sounds 343 has come up with.
      Zelda is one exception in the modern pool of games. The sounds are incredible, and the construction of sound effects is so good, the little barefoot slappy sounds on stone vs soil. Everything equiped on Link makes a noise based on his speed, and if he's crouching or stealth buffed it's actually recorded softer rather than just lowering the volume in the mixer.

    It's always nice to see that the developers back in the day spent as much time making the videogames as I spent playing them. I dont believe that level of commitment to a game exists nowadays, but I could be wrong.

I watched the memorial scene and started tearing up thinking "No way...he can't be dead" then I heard Lord hood say "Hard to believe he's dead." I started bawling my eyes out and cried out loud...I never sat through the end credits until a few months later and when I finally did and saw chief floating in the dawn I was like "YESSSSS HAHAHAAA" and shit my pants the end.

    Now as an adult and a 3D artist, I feel like each of these sections into each discipline of the game is a master class. No wonder the game still holds up almost 20 years later.
    The golden goose was indeed the team and the culture of said team. It is hard to come by this today in this corporate world. Only a few teams that are this tuned in are still around to this day.
    Talent cultures like this should be cherished.

    The sound design of halo is still amazing compared to many multiplayer games. For example. Fortnite is just one massive audio gangbang. It's seriously some of the worst audio my ears have ever been subjected to. There is no mixing at all. Some things are absurdly loud for no reason and completely drown out other sounds that should have priority. Not just the final mix of sounds but some of the sounds themselves that they've chosen make no sense. Footsteps above you sound like they are below. And the footsteps below sound like above. All my friends agree it's backwards and have had to train ourselves to note the difference. Not that it matters as half the time you won't be able to hear that when you're getting ear f**ked with build sounds, gunfire and objects breaking. Add special weapons and good luck hearing anything important at all without destroying your ears with high volumes.

    I get the impression that Bungie lost steam story-wise after Halo 2's development. A shame really, since Halo 2's story was so engaging.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 10 месяцев назад +2

      Not sure if you've seen the original Halo 2 story, the storyboards were released and the whole 3rd act was cut. C3 Sabertooth Halo made a video taking all the panels and turned it into an interesting animatic. He also made the Halo 1 storyboard into an animatic and has some lore videos about some misinterpretations of the story by 343 that significantly changed things and retconned parts of the previous halo lore.

    • @TheSocratesofAthens
      @TheSocratesofAthens 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@Jaker788 I did. Halo 2 was supposed to show the human-forerunner connection, which seemed much more interesting than outsourcing everything to other aliens. If only Bungie had had more time. I know that Jason took a break, as did Staten for while. They both were probably burnt out from Halo 2's rushed and intense development and left the team with little leadership or instruction on where to take the story next. I think we barely see them in this documentary.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheSocratesofAthens Yep. Staten was actually away for Halo 3 development till near the end. If I remember correctly he was pretty burnt out from Halo 2 and got into an argument with Marcus about the Halo 3 story. He took a long leave and during that time he was writing the book Contact Harvest. Halo 3 writing was done by a committee with Marty, Marcus Lehto, and some others I don't remember. I believe Staten helped some towards the end in stitching stuff up but didn't write anything, in comparison to Halo 2 where I believe Staten did a lot as well as Jason with his ideas.
      As for Jason not being there for Halo 3 development, I'm not sure. I believe he was away for the beginning of Halo 2s development at least, and he came back when they were realizing the direction they went with the Engine and Graphics was not viable for what they were doing in the game and struggling.
      After seeing that storyboard for Halo 2, they really planned on a big game. Halo 2 as released felt like it had a lot of content and length to the campaign, it just kinda stopped suddenly is all. Where Halo 3 isn't really any shorter in gameplay, but it's pretty slow paced and takes half or more of the campaign to really get started around the Ark.

    • @TheSocratesofAthens
      @TheSocratesofAthens 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@Jaker788 Halo 3 had the weakest story. I remember that we didn't learn too much, whereas, in Halo 2, we dug into the details of the Covenant and the Flood. It was really fascinating and I was disappointed that the game ended so short. I could really feel Jason's and Joseph's absence in Halo 3. I remember that, even before Halo 2, they almost cut multiplayer from Halo CE. So, even before Halo 2, the team perhaps didn't fully recover from making Halo CE. From what I gathered in Halo 2's documentary, the team was under pressure to finish the game before Christmas to hit peak sales. Perhaps with half a year more, or delaying the game until the next console, Halo 2 would have been perfect. Hindsight is almost always clearer than the fog of war.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 10 месяцев назад

      @@TheSocratesofAthens Possibly more time, although they did get a 1 year extension already due to issues in development.
      The biggest thing that hurt them was all of the work put into their updated engine with some graphical features they really wanted, like stencil shading, more dynamic shadows, and real time reflections on some stuff. A lot of time was spent coding these features, testing and trying to make it work, and lots to make the E3 demo work using it as the pathfinder or pipe cleaner for development. After all of that time a year or more into development they realized it just wasn't going to work. They had to throw away all of that after trying so hard to make it work. So they started for the most part back from the beginning on the engine, Halo CE as a base and re build up to something more feasible. Unfortunately all of this time in early production and having to do it again meant that some later stuff like many of the campaign levels still hadn't been worked on yet and were just whiteboard layout drawings, a lot of which were forced to be erased to finish on time. Final cinematics and a lot of animation work wouldn't have been done till most of the engine was more stable and final, so they know what they're working with and what the "budget" on screen was.
