From Naples to St. Petersburg: Rubinstein- Romance op.44 no.1 “Soirées à Saint Pétersbourg"

- This charming arrangement of Rubinstein's evocative classic was made by the Italian harpist, Virgina Ciarlone. Born in around 1869, Virginia studied in Naples, and along with her younger sister Giannina, received favourable mention in the press for her renditions of such 19th century staples as Parish Alvars and Godefroid. After finding employment at the Carl Theater of Vienna, Virginia ended up in Russia- where alongside orchestral and opera work in the great Russian houses, she maintained a presence as a solo performer. Her publishing activities there include numerous transcriptions of music popular with the Russian salons, most notably Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein. As a composer, the Fantasy on Themes from Gounoud's Faust, and the Impromptu for Chromatic Harp may still be obtained. The latter piece being published in Paris, it is unclear whether her life remained in Russia, or whether her art and new trends led her to new pastures.
I hope to pick up the threads of her life through further research.

Fun fact is - Virginia is an old relative of mine, the aunt of my grandfather. And that very portrait you show in the video is right in the living room of my dad's house. :) Thank you for bringing this to light!
